| The Princess and the Frog - G |
Welcome back, Disney. It's been way too damn long. I don't want to talk to much about it, lest I spoil anything. Let's just say that it delivers everything you love about the Disney formula, while putting enough twists on it to keep it from being stale. Add to that a fantastic vocal cast (in particular, Keith David, playing the suavest villain since Jafar, and Jim Cummings, playing one of the most charming supporting roles of his career), a vibrant score by Randy Newman (even if it's not quite as diverse as what Alan Menken's churned out for the House of Mouse in the past), and some of the most polished traditional animation to have come out in years, and you've got yourself a film that has washed out the bad taste of Disney's recent failures, and reminded us of why we loved them in the first place. If you love Disney for what they were, and not the tween-starlet pimps they've become, then this is the movie for you. Check it out. Bring a date. Enjoy. |

| Doubt - PG-13 | It's a fantastically shot film adapted from a fantastic play, starring a fantastic cast who give fantastic performances (although, to be fair, Meryl Streep hammed it up a bit during the big climactic confrontation), with a fantastically underplayed score by Howard Shore. Basically, it's fantastic. | December 14, 2009 | N/A | |||
| The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day - R |
Y'know those rabid fans devoted to this film's overhyped predecessor? The kind that know the entire movie backwards and forwards, and turned it into an "indie cult classic"? They're going to be suffering from a severe case of deja vu during the first half of this inferior sequel. Not only is there gratuitous use of stock footage throughout, but the "sequel" sandwiched in between the stock footage is the first movie in a new package. And this new package is full of bad dialogue and even worse acting. Julie Benz takes over for Willem Dafoe as the special agent tracking the MacManus Bros, and her unconvincing southern drawl starts to grate as badly as the rest of the first half. The same goes for Judd Nelson's godawful portrayal of the son of the movie's first antagonist. Along the way, though, the movie starts to grow on you. An original plot starts to surface in the second half, and it gets a little more engaging when we start to get a little more insight into Il Duche, the MacManus patriarch that Billy Connolly was simply born to play. The second half isn't without it's faults, not gonna lie. Peter Fonda in particular turned out an uncharacteristically hammy performance in his small role. But to make up for those faults, it's got plenty of charms. The action scenes get cranked up to 11, the new annoying accomplice (he's Mexican this time, and a surprisingly Anglo Mexican at that) starts to become endearing, and the big twist at the ending actually drew honest to God applause from me. Basically, if you liked the first one at all (even if, like me, you thought it wasn't worth the hype despite your enjoyment) go see the sequel. |

| Rock And Rule - PG | It was equal parts good, and equal parts bad. The voice acting was atrocious, the animation was good. The heroes were annoying, the villain was totally awesome. The story was pretty weak, the music was fantastic (seriously, if there's a soundtrack album for this movie out there, I want a copy). The references to other movies were uninspired, the musical sections were unlike anything I've seen before (in a good way). It was a movie I don't regret seeing, but aside from a couple bits here and there, it's not one I'd like to see again. | December 3, 2009 | N/A | |||

| Reptilian - Unrated | "King Kong" this ain't. Wow, this movie sucks. And it sucks in a good way. This movie is absolutely terrible, from weak script to stiff cast to cheesy special effects (digital SFX, I might add). So bad that it makes "Godzilla vs the Sea Monster" seem Oscar-worthy. So bad, that it's impossible to take seriously, even when people die. So bad, it's good. If you love "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" you must see "Reptilian". | November 29, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Bakjwi (Thirst) - R | Thirst was a little on the lengthy side, not gonna lie. But overall, it was a pretty engaging, and original, vampire flick. It was intriguing to see how a man of the cloth would deal with such an evil infliction, along with a new found lust brought along with it, and towards the end the movie takes a surprising turn. I don't think it's everybody's cup of tea (director Park Chan-wook is a little out there, as anyone who's seen Oldboy would happily tell you), but superb performances from the entire cast, beautiful cinematography, haunting music, and the story Park has to tell ensures that this is definitely a movie I wouldn't mind purchasing. | November 29, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Up - PG | It hasn't usurped the Wall-E/The Incredibles tie as my favorite Pixar picture, but all in all, Up was an entertaining animated adventure. It's not everyday a curmudgeon gets to play Indiana Jones, so originality is a big plus in this movie's favor. As with all of Pixar's best movies, the characters are pretty fleshed out, and there's a perfect balance between humor and bittersweetness. On top of that, the voice acting was phenomenal, and it was gorgeous to look at. | November 29, 2009 | N/A | |||

| [Rec] - R | Considering all the praise heaped upon this movie, I was expecting something better. It's one of the few horror movies where a mockumentary style is actually realistic as opposed to gimmicky, due to the absence of music, and a cast made up of people that act, and look, like real people. That being said, the movie doesn't really pack any scares until the last 10 minutes or so. Plenty of startles, but not a whole lot of scares. | October 16, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Street Fighter - PG-13 |
Raul Julia's delightfully eeeeevil turn as M. Bison (the movie's flamboyant villain, for those not in the know) is one of the major contributing factors that saves this movie from being a total waste of time. The other would be who you see it with. Street Fighter is a bad movie, that goes without saying. Apart from Raul Julia's gleeful scenery-chewing, the acting is dreadful on all counts (including, I'm sad to say, Wes Studi and Ming-Na). On top of that, the movie has nothing to do with the video game it says it's based on, apart from character names, costume design, and-I'm not joking about this-a control panel from the arcade cabinet featured as a prop. And for a movie called Street Fighter, it's pretty light on the action. As terrible as it is, though, it's got a certain so-bad-it's-good charm that makes it a perfect party movie, and some of the one-liners are memorable. It's more entertaining than the Mortal Kombat movies, that's for sure. |

| Law Abiding Citizen - R | I don't care if Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler are in it. It still looks really stupid. | September 22, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Mosura (Mothra) - Unrated | It's one of Ishiro Honda's more entertaining post-Godzilla monster mashes (certainly better than the painfully dull Rodan), but it sort of feels like Honda's run out of anything to say. It's a charming little B-grade monster movie, and aside from the two fairies who would become a staple of any movie the titular bug is in, it's a pretty paint-by-numbers one at that. Mothra's big-screen debut doesn't hold a candle to any of her rumbles with the Big-G, nor does it have the impact of his surprisingly somber first flick. | September 22, 2009 | N/A | |||
