The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters - PG-13 More proof that reality is stranger than fiction... and a lot nerdier too. Two middle-aged dudes fight for supremacy in the most primal of all competitions: Donkey Kong! With so many great moments and memorable characters, this documentary is not just for video game geeks (although they'll probably love it even more). October 23, 2007

Resident Evil: Extinction - R The only Resident Evil movie I've seen. The post-apocalyptic desert setting had potential, too bad it was completely nullified by boring genetic cloning conspiracy crap and a bunch of cookie-cutter Matrix-esque action scenes. October 17, 2007

Run Fatboy Run - PG-13 A romantic comedy starring Simon Pegg and directed by David Schwimmer... an American production starring a lot of British talent. Somehow it rises above the typical rom-com dreck, and although it does have some overly sappy moments, I had a lot of fun with it. October 17, 2007

Eagle vs. Shark - R Not quite the Napoleon Dynamite clone everyone says it is, and the similarities that do exist are actually the least interesting part of the movie. If you're a Flight of the Conchords fan you'll probably want to see this for Jemaine's performance, but in the end Loren Horsley is the one who will win your heart. October 17, 2007

The Darjeeling Limited - R As far as Wes Anderson goes, many of his trademarks are present, but he also showed a bit of restraint and a willingness to keep things smaller and simpler. It may be a bit too aimless and not funny enough for some Anderson fans, but for me it was a breath of fresh air. The decision to shoot on location in India also gave this movie a beautiful and unique flavour, and sets it apart from the rest of his filmography. October 17, 2007

Sunshine - R Fantastic visuals and taut pacing eventually give way to a muddled and unfocused conclusion. Certainly one of the best science-fiction movies to come out in a while, but sadly that's not really saying much. Danny Boyle is the man, but this isn't necessarily his finest moment. September 18, 2007

Halloween - R Rob Zombie manages to work his dirtbag grindhouse style into this genre-defining classic, but fails to make it frightening or exciting in any way. The hour-long origin story of Michael Myers as a young kid bordered on self-parody, while the second half of the film was redundant and poorly executed. Please make the hurting stop. Balls of Fury - PG-13 Balls of Fury makes you realize what actors like Will Ferrell bring to the table when you're dealing with these generic sports comedies. They tried to sneak this one into theatres without having to pay for any big names (except for Christopher Walken of course), and without a decent script, and the result is painful to watch. Challenges Evan Almighty for the most unfunny comedy of the year. September 1, 2007

The Invasion - PG-13 Not terrible, but it couldn't hold a candle to the superior '78 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It comes off more as a sci-fi thriller than an actual horror movie, as it's not very scary. It feels disjointed, and none of "modernized" changes to the method of infection were an improvement either. August 26, 2007

Air Guitar Nation - R Given its silly premise there is still an intriguing story here with some surprisingly suspenseful moments. When C-Diddy kicks out the hot licks, it just brings goosebumps to your arms. Air Guitar is truly an art form, and it proves that rock and roll is just as much about showmanship as it is about musicianship. August 26, 2007

Superbad - R The second Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen home run of the summer... of course, Apatow may not deserve as much credit for this one since he was only the producer. Probably more laughs per minute than Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but also a higher ratio of misfires as well (too much stuff with the goofy cops). August 19, 2007

Stardust - PG-13 Glorious visuals and a fun supporting cast still didn't help this fairy tale gather enough momentum to truly take flight. Too whimsical to work as a fantasy adventure, and not funny enough to be a comedy, the movie drags more often than not. There are some fun moments, but overall, a missed opportunity. August 15, 2007

Rush Hour 3 - PG-13 I've seen less entertaining movies, but not many that were quite so sloppy and unoriginal. (This coming from a guy who liked Rush Hour 2 a lot.) This movie feels like it was written in five minutes, and everyone involved is just in it for the easy paycheck. The action scenes are scarce and poorly executed, the jokes repetitive and predictable. Don't waste your money. August 12, 2007

White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Unrated One of the most powerful and disturbing films I have ever seen. It seems almost forgotten nowadays that two atomic bombs were actually dropped in the world. The testimonies from survivors who were actually there reminds us all that it happened, and it was devastating on a scale we can never imagine. August 12, 2007

The Bourne Ultimatum - PG-13 Forget Transformers or Die Hard 4, this is the action flick of the summer. White-knuckle, teeth-grinding action sequences mixed with great suspense and mind-boggling camera work. The best of the series and well worth the price of admission. August 7, 2007

Hot Rod - PG-13 Hot Rod tries to be a cult classic a la Napoleon Dynamite but it lacks any style; it goes for quirky characters but they aren't quirky at all. There were a couple absurd laugh out loud moments but for the most this was a comedy with no punchlines and no brilliant comedic performances to save it. August 7, 2007

Underdog - PG Patrick Warburton and Peter Dinklage were somewhat amusing, but the whole talking dog gimmick really could have been used a lot better if they went way over the top with it. It's basically as dumb as it looks, but it's a kids movie so I guess you can't ask for much more. August 7, 2007

The Simpsons Movie - PG-13 More consistently funny than the last few seasons of The Simpsons (or what I've seen of them), but we've seen all these jokes many, many times before. Hardcore Simpsons fans will be pleased, but for the rest of us it's just a 90 minute episode of a TV show that probably should have died a long time ago. July 29, 2007

Letters from Iwo Jima - R One of the most quiet and contemplative war movies I've ever seen. Despite some violent images, it was very serene at points... a definite contrast to the usual American perspective on WWII. Very refreshing, and impressive in the sense that it actually felt like a Japanese film despite being helmed by an American director. July 28, 2007

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - PG-13 A magnificent opening and thrilling finale bookend what is otherwise a pretty dull film. To its credit, it is the first truly dark Potter flick and actually feels like it was made for grown ups. Unfortunately, the Dolores Umbridge character hardly seemed a worthy focus for an entire film, and a mere distraction from the storyline that has become the central focus since the last film: Lord Voldemort. July 13, 2007

Sicko - PG-13 Like all of Moore's movies, it is powerful, effective and provides plenty of food for thought. You obviously can't take everything at face value, but by all means see this movie. You will at least have the illusion of feeling outraged, enlightened and entertained. July 4, 2007

Ratatouille - G Gorgeous looking CG film with cinematic flair and surprisingly mature themes. In the end, the story and sense of humour seemed to be lacking a certain "je ne sais quoi", but still an impressive feat nonetheless. July 4, 2007

Live Free or Die Hard - PG-13 A solid convergence of new school action and old school, delivered with ample amounts of comedy. It doesn't surpass the original (not by a long shot), but as an update to a long-running franchise it does the job. I'll be waiting for Unrated Version where McClane doesn't call everyone a jerkoff. July 4, 2007

Transformers - PG-13 It's a two and a half hour car commercial made for 16 year old boys too young to remember the cartoon. Shia LaBeouf is the lone strength of this film (along with some cutting edge effects that are obviously worth seeing), but by the end the blinding lens flares and Michael Bay slo-mo sequences effectively drown out the sense of fun and excitement that this movie should have delivered.
