The Dark Knight
PG-13
Loved Heath Ledger (but not his take on the joker), Aaron Eckhart (more), and the scene with the boats.
Did not like the fact that the plot didn't take off for an hour (why is that hong kong detour really necessary?) reliance on an insane man in makeup always being two steps ahead of the world's greatest detective (he really EXPECTED him to rebuild that bullet and get a fingerprint off it?) and I HATE Christian Bale's reliance on his shitty Batman growl, even in scenes where the characters KNOW batman is bruce wayne. But those are all fairly minor quibbles.
Overall, its a damn good superhero film (which it is. It has a black-and-white morality and superheroics) I still like Iron Man and the first two X-Men films better.

Groundhog Day
PG
An earnest comedy with a strong heart. Its highly original story and excellent performance by Bill Murray, in what would be his first of strong dramatic/comedic roles. His transformation is believable and easy to sympathize with, and his journey is one that can easily be existentialized (Can that be a word? Please?)

A funny comedy with a heart, I thought the performances were terrific, the plot believable, and the humor subtle enough to keep it from overtaking the characters. A terrific film. I can see where one might not enjoy it, you really have to sympathize with Miles.

Byôsoku 5 senchimêtoru (5 Centimeters per Second) (A Chain of Short Stories about Their Distance)
Unrated
My love affair with Makoto Shinkai continues with this film, which has a more realistic grounding but slightly (only just) more cynical tone. I've always admired the work of anime director Hayao Miyazaki, and figured thats all anime had to offer me. However, Shinkai's films have more emotional depth and stories that resonate greater. I can't believe I didn't find out about him sooner, and I can't wait to find his other work.

Before Sunrise

The closest to a perfect film I have ever seen. A simple love story set over the course of a sixteen hour period, buoyed by completely natural performances and a terrific script. Hawke and Deply are so good that its a suprise that the film was not improvised. We care about the characters, not because of false tension or danger, but because they seem so so real. When the film is over, you will have sworn you spent the day with them, and you won't want them to leave.

Lost In Translation

One of my favorites. Both the leads are great, with Bill Murray playing a version of himself, and Scarlett Johanssen in a very nonverbal performance that I really enjoyed. A very memorable film due to its simplicity and thoughtful story. It demands little from the audience and gives a lot.
