| 21 - PG-13 | Too slick and polished, formulaic, soulless coming-of-age story that only offers a couple of truly entertaining scenes. Jim Sturgess is very likeable but a tad boring. Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne, on the other hand, are pretty great as usual. Although I must say that all the characters are pretty one-dimensional, so no one can really shine. The story starts strong, with an intriguing premise, but from there on it's just going downhill. The worse thing is the predictability: you're always way ahead of what's actually going on the screen. It's a shame since this actually could have been a great movie. Well, I guess I should just read the book the film is based on. | June 10, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Step Up 2 the Streets - PG-13 | Just wow. How stupid can a movie get? The dancing is without a doubt pretty cool, but otherwise the movie is utterly hollow. Besides, it has ALL been done before: the predictable characters, the corny love story, the annoying "you can do it"/"be yourself" power speeches and the list goes on and on. But you know, anyone who goes to see this for some other reason than the dancing is, well, insane. | June 9, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Darjeeling Limited - R | Charming, hilarious, smart: one of the most original comedies I've ever seen. Wilson, Brody and Schwartzman have flawless comedic timing and their chemistry is a great pleasure to watch. Although lacking in narrative substance, the beautifully shot film has such heart and spontaneity that you can't help but to fall in love with it. | June 8, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) (Warriors of the Wind) - PG | A touching, nuanced and stylish epic by the master of storytelling, Hayao Miyazaki. The film sends a timeless message about nature conservation, pacifism and open-mindedness. It masterfully avoids all the clichés and you can't divide the multidimensional characters to the good and the evil. However, the ending is a bit abrupt, it feels quite rushed since some of the story is still being told as the credits start to roll. Also, there are some weird, completely silent moments without any sound or background music, and I wasn't sure if it was intentional or not. However, the story and its characters are so captivating that you don't really notice the flaws. | June 8, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Ce que mes yeux ont vu (The Vanishing Point) (What My Eyes Have Seen) - Unrated | An elegant and subtle art mystery rich in atmosphere. It could have been more multilayered, which would have added depth to it. There are a bit too many plot holes, and it's a bit too fantastical that a great mystery is revealed by accident. Also, James Thiérrée's character was supposed to be very important but somehow he was forgotten too quickly. Would have loved to have seen more of the charismatic actor. | June 8, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - PG-13 | A fairly fun, old-fashioned adventure that doesn't bring much depth to the character of Indiana Jones, unfortunately. It's just another adventure that left me quite underwhelmed, but at the same time I was quite entertained. There were some great moments, but they were too far between. However, there was some unbelievably ridiculous stuff, like the ants and monkeys, and damn, sci-fi just doesn't fit Indy at all. The old magic is definitely gone, but I don't think I expected anything else. | May 29, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Swept Away - R | A fun film to watch with your friends because damn, it sucks. :D The film probably has some of the most ridiculous scenes and lines ever. However, there was actually some good stuff mainly thanks to Adriano Giannini and the chef's helpers. But c'mon Guy Ritchie, what were you thinking? | May 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Iron Man - PG-13 | Believable, funny, sardonic and smart comic book adaptation with impressive effects. There's nothing Robert Downey Jr. can't do, he's cool yet vulnerable as Tony Stark. In addition, the whole cast is stellar. The film's not mind-blowing, but definitely one of the best -- if not THE best -- super hero movies I've seen in recent years. Bring on the sequels! | May 2, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Be Kind Rewind - PG-13 | Charming feel-good movie celebrating friendship, creativity and independent filmmaking. The most fun parts are of course the filmmaking scenes, which are absolutely brilliant. The premise is a bit absurd and the story is somewhat corny, but in the end that doesn't really matter because the warm, humane comedy just grabs you. | April 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Accidental Spy - PG-13 | Dubbing sucks: whatever you do, do not watch the dubbed version! The fighting sequences are fun and inventive, but the story.. well, sucks. Also, all the fighting gets tiresome, especially if you have seen every other Jackie Chan movie. If you have: wow, that's scary. | March 29, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Run Fatboy Run - PG-13 | March 29, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| Stop Loss - R | March 29, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| Horton Hears a Who! - G | Very sweet and amusing, but the hyperactive slapstick comedy is a bit over the top. The film has some wonderfully strange and clever jokes and delightfully weird supporting characters. However, the film is way too long; some of the sequences seem a bit forced. Jim Carrey is terrific, but the two Vlads steal the show. | March 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Galaxy Quest - PG | A delightful parody that lovingly spoofs sci-fi geekdom. The jokes are dead-on and the cast has wonderful chemistry. For some reason I'm just not too fond of sci-fi (at least not anymore), so the actual space adventure didn't really sweep me away. The film is a good satire, but just an OK adventure. | March 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| I, Robot - PG-13 | Predictable and mindless as hell, but entertaining nevertheless, even for someone who isn't that much into sci-fi. It seems as though Will Smith keeps playing the same character from one movie to another, but hey, it really works. So, I can't complain. The action sequences are great fun to watch and I really enjoy the dry humour. However, the movie is just too fantastical for my taste. | March 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus - R |
Exquisite, daring and original but it goes too far from reality without really illuminating the life of the mysterious photographer. Robert Downey Jr. is a genius (then again, we all knew that already). Nicole Kidman's take on Arbus is both touching and compelling. However, I would have preferred a more realistic movie instead of a fable. Arbus' photos are very intriguing, but the film doesn't concentrate on her work. The film never really succeeds in diving into Arbus' mindset, it just scratches the surface. |

| Welcome to Collinwood - R | Positively quirky, sly and surprising. Once it gets over the dry patch after the plan is set into motion, it fully grabs your attention. Most of the characters are well-crafted and they grow on you as the story moves forward. The charming Sam Rockwell really stands out... how can he be so wonderful in every role he does? Although I may be just a little biased since it's always a great pleasure to watch him. I mean, he could read a phonebook for five hours and I'd be the first one to see that one. | March 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - R |
Masterful and hypnotic blend of film noir, black humour and surrealism. Impressive directorial debut by Clooney! He really understands the essence of Kaufman's nuanced script. And you know, Sam Rockwell. What can one say about him? He's too talented and too cool for words. Also, the film probably has the funniest cameo scene ever. |

| Heist - R | Predictable but interesting and smart. The movie does have a couple of cool twists and the dialogue is clever. However, there are a bit too many plot/character twists that just reduce the credibility too much. But the cast is very convincing. | February 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| National Treasure - PG | The film is over-the-top, full of plot holes, but undeniably enjoyable and thrilling. The characters are a bit dull and predictable, but the story is fascinating. All in all, this is a ride well worth taking. | February 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - R | Words are too small to describe it. The film is too stunning, too beautiful, too full of feeling. Simply heart-stopping. | February 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - PG | Fairly amusing but a bit tedious and meaningless. Sam Rockwell and Bill Nighy were great as usual. Too bad the story just didn't really interest me at all. In addition, the wry humor was often too forced. But hey, thanks for all the fish! | February 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - R | Eerie, gorgeous, dark. Pitt's subtle performance with quiet menace is a wonder to watch. Also, Casey Affleck pretty much blew my mind with his intense and creepy take on Robert Ford. However, the movie was a little too slow paced and I've seen a few Jesse James documentaries that were more intriguing than this film. That's what took away the one final star. Nevertheless, this one's still a captivating story of the mystery that is Jesse James. | February 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| 3:10 to Yuma - R | Engaging, intelligent, cathartic, gritty, vibrant, multi-layered. A wonderfully old-fashioned western with contemporary touches. It does have few predictable twists and stereotypical characters, but they successfully move the film forward. Terrific performances by Bale and Crowe. A special thank you to Ben Foster for being awesomely chilling. 3:10 to Yuma is a brilliant story of heroism, villainy and the elusive line between the two. | February 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
