| The Kite Runner - PG-13 | A devastatingly beautiful and humane story about friendship, loss and redemption. Director Marc Forster delicately shows the two different sides of Afghanistan - the undeniable beauty and horrors. The friendship - which inevitably comes to an end - between the two little boys is incredibly authentic and heart-stopping. | September 4, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Wolfman - Unrated | September 1, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| Ben X - Unrated | An engaging, intelligent and daring youth drama. Greg Timmermans - who, btw, is a lovely guy in person - gives a riveting performance as the autistic Ben. The film offers a very devastating but ultimately refreshingly hopeful take on a difficult subject. | August 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| You Don't Mess with the Zohan - PG-13 | Crap. | August 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Other Boleyn Girl - PG-13 | The historical soap opera is quite intriguing on character level, but the story is rather absurd and overly simplified. The dynamic Natalie Portman and sensitive Scarlett Johansson are stellar as the two Boleyn sisters. | August 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| WALL-E - G | Absolutely outstanding, charming, unique, witty, genuine. A real treasure. | August 20, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The X-Files: I Want to Believe (The X Files 2) - PG-13 | The chemistry between Mulder and Scully is as good as it was in the series, but the dull plot is surprisingly weak and lacks in any fascinating paranormal mysteries. Director-writer Chris Carter and writer Frank Spotniz daringly raise many enticing questions but fail to offer any satisfying answers. In addition to the stellar Anderson and Duchovny, Billy Connolly gives a nuanced performance as the chilly priest fighting against his inner demons. | July 31, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Forbidden Kingdom - PG-13 | The spectacular fights and heartfelt performances by Jackie Chan and Jet Li don't quite save the childish story. The meticulous fighting scenes choreographed by Yuen Wo-Ping are cool, there's no denying of that. However, the film doesn't really concentrate on the philosophy behind the martial arts, even though it clearly preaches about its importance. This is definitely a fun ride for pre-teens - who hopefully get interested in the Chinese legends and culture - but the film could use some edge and rawness. | July 31, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Lawn Dogs - R | Wonderfully quirky, smart and evocative look at suburban life and unlikely friendship. A masterful and touching performance by the gifted Sam Rockwell. | July 31, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Helvetica - Unrated | Engaging, intelligent, eloquent, often hilarious and insightful documentary that goes way beyond the typeface and typography. | July 31, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Battle for Haditha - R | Surprisingly devastating, realistic and heart-wrenching war fiction based on true events. It lacks in subtlety, but succeeds in showing the Iraqi war from various vantage points. And damn, it doesn't matter on which side you're standing - the inexplicable view is utterly shocking and angering. | July 31, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) - PG-13 | Visually impressive and dynamic, but a bit too pretentious and clumsy storywise. I enjoyed the sarcasm, hilariously odd supporting characters and the kick-ass villain who actually had some depth to him. But you know, the over-all plot was quite awkward and pointless. | July 31, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Dark Knight - PG-13 |
Forget about Batman, The Joker has arrived. Heath Ledger's eerie take on the iconic villain is pure genius. You have to experience the sheer madness yourself. Brilliantly entertaining and disturbing. I'm very impressed by the fact that the visually stylish movie actually has something substancial to say about the human nature. It doesn't just offer the basic good vs. evil theme, but it gives a much more thought-provoking examination of the elusive line between right and wrong. This is Ledger's film, but the rest of the cast is very commanding, too. However, I still can't help but to laugh at Bale's comedic Batman growl. Also, one of the supporting characters kind of loses his credibility towards the end because of silly comic book antics that don't fit the pretty realistic style of the film. In comparison to the raw Joker, this character becomes too "digitalized". The action sequences are well-executed with soaring, epic music, but the only truly mind-blowing thing is Heath Ledger. |

| Batman Begins - PG-13 |
It was about time to see this one. I must say, I'm a bit surprised this is so praised by everyone because to me it isn't anything special. Sure, it brings depth to Batman, but otherwise it's a pretty straight-forward, formulaic action film of which last action sequence is way too long. In addition, I've always found Batman to be very boring as a character and I couldn't care less about his inner demons and whatnot. Also, what the hell is up with Bale's strange growl when he's talking as Batman? Unintentionally hilarious, and damn distracting. The secret society stuff is way too fantastical. Plus, Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy as baddies aren't very convincing either. |

| Varg Veum - Bitre blomster (Bitter Flowers) - Unrated | The charismatic Trond Espen Seim is very convincing and commanding as the relentless private detective Varg Veum. Unfortunately the loose story is way too predictable and absurd. However, I was intrigued enough to want to see more of Veum, hopefully in a better film. | July 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints - R | A lively and raw coming-of-age story that is a bit over-indulgent and slightly amateurish. It's always a pleasure to watch Robert Downey Jr. Also, the young cast - especially Shia LaBeouf and Channing Tatum - are convincing. However, the story and its characters are a bit too shallow, which prevents the audience from really caring for them. | July 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| An American Crime - R | The devastating and chilling story about child abuse fails to examine the reasons behind the horrific human behaviour. Ellen Page and Catherine Keener are stellar, but the impact of the film is diminished by the fact that there's really no illuminating insight. | July 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Mamma Mia! - PG-13 | Nightmarishly cheerful, uninspired, banal, monotonous, sappy. C'mon, the film has a damn exclamation point in its title! It kind of tells it all. However, the soulful Meryl Streep is pretty captivating and refreshing. | July 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Love Guru - PG-13 | Just when I thought Eddie Murphy was bad with his new "comedy", Mike Myers is even worse. Guru Pitka is undoubtedly the most revolting and despicable movie character ever who completely fails in being even a bit funny. Two stars for the hilarious book names and the awesome hockey announcer duo, Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan. | July 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Meet Dave - PG | Why won't Eddie Murphy just go away already? Who wants to pay for seeing him doing some crazy walk and facial expressions that are nothing but awkwardly pitiful. Also, whose idea was it to cram all the wretched toilet humour and annoyingly obvious pop culture references in the same film? Oh yes, then there's the obligatory family movie message about believing in yourself... Yeehaa. | July 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Mongol - R | July 14, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| Bangkok Dangerous - R | Why, oh why, do you keep creating crap Nicolas? For an action movie, there really isn't that much action. The film tries to be very artistic with its slow pace, eerie music and dark visual style. But it's just annoyingly pretentious. Also, the story tries to examine the inner world of an assassin, but the efforts are completely ruined by the silly story that doesn't really have enough substance. | July 11, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Jumper - PG-13 | You have to see it to understand how terrible it is. Ridiculous and sloppy plot, crappy special effects, unimpressive and stereotypical characters... You name it, this film has it all. | July 11, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson - R | July 6, 2008 | N/A | ||||
| The Disappeared - PG | Surprisingly subtle thriller that effectively plays with basic horror elements (faint whispers echoing in the distance, reflections on windows, menacing surroundings etc.) However, the ending is extremely silly and out of place. It doesn't give any proper explanation for the "evilness". Harry Treadaway is stellar as a troubled young man struggling to keep his sanity while trying to figure out what happened to his little brother. | July 3, 2008 | N/A |
