Despite the depressing subject matter, this is not a depressing film as the friendship between the two young boys is so inspiring and uplifting. The boys' innocence and ignorance of what is really going on in Nazi Germany makes the story so much more moving than if it were seen from a purely adult perspective. This movie will make you cry, for the senseless waste of war and the capacity of human beings to cause suffering.
