Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003, PG-13)
This was probably the best movie I have seen in over twenty years! Modeled on the first ten novels (Master and Commander #1 to The Far Side of the World #2) by Patrick O'Brian, the movie is set durring the Napoleonic Wars (early 1800s) and pits H.M.S. Surprise, a 28 gun frigate commanded by Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), against the 44-gun Acheron, a heavier French ship. Although the central plot revolves around the pursuit of the newer French ship by the old and scarred Surprise, the movie is about much more than naval battle durring the early 19th Century. The inner relationships among officers and crew, daily workings of the ship, and constant risk and peril faced by those who brought to bear the mightiest warships of the day are all delivered with stunning accuracy, drama, and suspense. As well, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is sure to excite those who yearn for accuracy in both historical and technical realms. -WW. |
