A touching remake of a 1990 Italian film about a lonely retiree and recent widower who finds that his grown children are too busy to spend time with him. So (a la "About Schmidt"), he decides to travel the country and visit each of them, finding nothing's as fine as it appears on the surface. Another exceptional performance by Robert De Niro (who's been so good for so long we now take him for granted). One of the best films of 2009.
Depp is incredibly miscast as Dillinger (looks like he's going to a Halloween party). The film itself is handsomely-made, but overlong and awkwardly paced and no match for the 1940s "Dillinger" with Lawrence Tierney and especially John Milius' "Dillinger" (1973) starring Warren Oates. Even a handsome actor like Robert Conrad made a more convincing Dillinger in a small role in 1979's "The Lady in Red" because he has the edge Depp sorely lacks. Would have been nice to see what Walter Hill would have done with this project with better, tougher casting and a leaner, meaner script. Michael Mann has seemed to have lost his touch since "The Insider" (1999).
Interesting concept. Held my interest, but not counting the 4 minutes of end credits only remains on screen for 84 minutes. I have a feeling a better, longer cut existed and the studio heads didn't like the movie, so they just cut it way down. Princess, you must have been bored in parts. 88 minutes for an $80 million-dollar budgeted film is awfully short.
