Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl
#1 of the Pirates of the Caribbean series and undoubtedly the best of the bunch! Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush were superb in their roles. The soundtrack was perfectly tuned to the movie. Everything "flowed" with no lulls in the script. Too bad #2 and #3 wandered so far from the original.
3
Elizabeth (1998,  R)

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007,  PG-13)
Elizabeth: The Golden Age

But when a dashing seafarer, Walter Raleigh, captures her heart, she is forced to make her most tragic sacrifice for the good of her country.

Tells the thrilling tale of one woman's crusade to control her lover, destroy her enemies and secure her position as a beloved icon of the western world.
5
Anne of the Thousand Days (1969,  PG)
Anne of the Thousand Days
A lusty and powerful movie about Henry VIII and his romance (and eventual troubled marriage) to Anne Boleyn. Richard Burton is superb in his role as Henry--a besotted man in his early 40's desperate to have a male heir to leave his kingdom to. Genevieve Bujold plays her part with skill and courage as the woman (Anne Boleyn) who plots her way to Henry's bed and as his queen. The dynamics at court and the different players and their schemes weave a dangerous web with tragic consequences! A movie to watch over and over again.

A husband and wife lawyer team clash when the wife defends a woman on trial for shooting her spouse. The lawyer husband is the prosecutor. Wonderful dynamics between Tracy and Hepburn...especially the massage scene (with towels!) LOL.

Terra (Battle For Terra) (2009,  PG)
Terra (Battle For Terra)
A movie...ok a cartoon...but it shows how the quest for power and resources drives human history. Humanity has ruined the Earth...moved to the two planets nearest Earth and fought over them (destroying them) and has moved into space looking for another Earth-like planet to acquire. They discover Terra...a beautiful, nature filled planet with just two problems...a peaceful indigenous race of aliens and a poisonous atmosphere that humans can't breathe. So... the humans decide to strip the planet of it's original atmosphere and terraform it with oxygen (a poisonous atmosphere to the aliens). Trust, cooperation, sacrifice and courage rate this movie 5 stars in my library. Showing this to children to show them the REAL cost of aggression towards other peoples is priceless!

A Will of Their Own
Strong movie about strong women. How they did whatever was necessary to survive and raise their children (much of it without the help of a man). Good movie to view with your daughters AND sons.

The Last of the Mohicans (1992,  R)
The Last of the Mohicans
"Stay alive!...I will find you!"...those words spoken by Daniel Day-Lewis sent shivers down my spine. Realistic, violent and unpredictable...and all of the actors were excellent in this action-packed flick.

Schindler's List (1993,  R)
29
Blood Diamond (2006,  R)

Amen (2003,  Unrated)
Amen
The Boston Globe gave this movie 4 1/"2 stars (see movie cover)...I give it 5 stars! A movie you need to watch over and over to understand the political machinations being done during the 1930's and WWII. The Jews were being killed in "death camps"...all the world leaders knew. It was documented, there were eye witnesses and protests but NOTHING was done except some general "tsk tsk's". In the 1930's when the insane, the crippled were killed in Germany because they were "non-productive" citizens there was a public outcry in GERMANY and the killings of these people stopped. When the Jews were rounded up (in plain site on a day-to-day basis), people believed they were being "re-located" to work camps....millions of them. Yet some people followed their hearts and worked to denounce these atrocities. And this story is about two of them...

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003,  PG-13)

Robin Williams stars in a dramatic comedy about an extraordinary android of the future. Though he was purchased as a "household appliance", his family soon considers him to be part of the familiy. Over a period of 200 years he adapts and is altered to become more and more "human like". (his #1 goal).
33
Joe's Apartment (1996,  PG-13)
Joe's Apartment
Watched this one day with my 4 year old granddaughter. We BOTH loved it. It's "campy", cute and silly enough for kids...adults will laugh their asses off. And yes, they DID use live cockroaches in some parts of the movie. GROSS! Not much of a plot but the singing roach floor shows will get everyone tapping their feet LOL!
34

The Clan of the Cave Bear

Outfoxed - Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism (2004,  Unrated)
Outfoxed - Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism
Former FOX NEWS employees talk about how they were forced to push a "right-wing" point of view or risk their jobs. OUTFOXED examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's FOX News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in TV news. Shows the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public's right to know. A team monitored FOX News 24 hours/day for months to discover exactly how its shows worked. The result is an intense examination of FOX News and the lie inherent in its favorite motto: "Fair and Balanced".

Black Beauty (1994,  G)
Black Beauty
Note: the trailer shown with this movie is NOT the right one for this movie.

This is the most faithful of the book's several filmings.
43
The Mist (2007,  R)
The Mist
This movie scared the hell out of me...but not because of the "creatures" but because of how the people trapped in the super market evolved and changed over a 3 day period. From civilized human beings to brute instinct in less than 72 hours. Marcia Gay Harden was excellent as the unstable religious "nut" who's constantly reading from the Bible's book of revelations. Andre Braugher is the cold, logical attorney from the big city. Thomas Jane is completely believable as the artist trapped with his small boy (Nathan Gamble) . And the boy...OMG...I wanted to hold him close and comfort him myself. But the best lines were from Toby Jones (grocery bagger): "Put two or more people in a room and soon they'll be taking sides and trying to kill the others...why do you think we created politics and religion?".
44
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
#2 of the LOTR series. Love the series. Own the series. Can watch it over and over and it never gets dull.

State of the Union (The World and His Wife) (1948,  Unrated)
State of the Union (The World and His Wife)
Should be required viewing by every American of voting age before EACH election and primary. Excellent performances by Hepburn and Tracy that show the double-dealing, conniving realm of politics. All the "special" interest groups jockeying for power and control...and the voice of one man (and woman) struggling for honesty and integrity in the midst of it all.

Angels & Demons (2009,  PG-13)
Angels & Demons
The plot pulled me in and didn't let me go until the end. Photography was intense and played with lights and shadows ("good vs evil"?) throughout the movie. The church hierarchy was very evident (rules, traditions, formalities) and touched well on a real problem in the church both in the past and in the present. This is a good role for Tom Hanks (he seems more comfortable in this 2nd movie). Looking forward to more and will add this movie to my home library!
