Brigham Young (1940, Unrated)
Although it may not be entirely historically accurate, Brigham Young is very entertaining on a number of levels. Lots of great performances - Dean Jagger in the title role and Vincent Price as Joseph Smith are particularly effective. Linda Darnell as the "outsider" Zina and love interest for Tyrone Power, is quite a humorous revelation with her frank skepticism of the Mormon belief, particularly polygamy! With a compelling Lamar Trotti script and a stirring Alfred Newman score the film moves briskly to the climax with the seagulls. The DVD has some great extras including very interesting commentary. |

That Wonderful Urge (1948, Unrated)This is a remake of Love is News (1937). This time his co-star is Gene Tierney rather than Loretta Young. I love the Count de Guyon character that appears in both films. Here it's Reginald Gardiner, while George Sanders has the role in Love is News. In both films Ty proves he was adept at light comedy. Since he was known to be quite the prankster, it's certainly not surprising! Love the scene where he and Gene "reenact" the time Mother Tyler shot the government agent for Gene's socialite friends ("Whoops! We busted our beads!"). |
