The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
A true game-changer for the comic book film genre. This proves that the typical beat-em-up tone of the vast field of comic movies is not the only possibility, as The Dark Knight tackles serious issues like terrorism, government surveillance, the pain of loss, and most importantly, our willingness to cast aside the rules and standards that we hold ourselves to and hold up our society when our own safety is on the line. But at the same time, it succeeds in every way as an action heavy summer blockbuster. If this movie isn't in the Best Picture discussion come January I will be truly shocked. Do yourself a favor, and see this movie. And if you've seen it, see it again.

Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Just short of perfect. That's all I have to say.
3
There Will Be Blood (2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
Loved the dark comedy, and Daniel Day-Lewis is absolutely amazing in this role. His versatility is unbelievable.
4
Three Kings (1999,  R)
5
The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
6
The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
A beautiful story of human frailty and hopeless dedication to a dream, The Wrestler ultimately serves as both a tale of warning and a tale of passion. The raw emotion that comes from every character, coupled with the "shaky camera" and the deli counter scenes that were shot with actual grocery store customers, impart the sense upon the viewer that you are actually following Randy "The Ram" around as he tries to piece his life together again. Certainly not a "feel-good" movie by any means, but it is still an inspirational story, whether you feel like The Ram is who who want to be or who you never want to be.
7
The Simpsons Movie (2007,  PG-13)
8
No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
There's really nothing more to say. See this movie. One of the best movies I have ever seen. Anyone who tells you that "the ending sucks" simply doesn't understand the point of the story.
9
The Departed (2006,  R)
10
Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
As a complete outsider to the series, I can tell you that if you haven't ever given Star Trek a chance before you need to try it now. This movie made a fan out of me, at least for all forthcoming projects. Incredible visuals and sound, a story that managed to feel serious without being heavy-handed and sci-fi without being corny and unbelievable, and a group of actors that have a clear respect for the depiction of the characters made this both compelling and fun. Even with a plot twist that could have turned the entire storyline cheesy and outlandish, the filmmakers have such a belief the rules of the world that they have created that I never once even questioned the plausibility of the whole scenario...which contributed to the fact that I never once felt like I was watching a typical sci-fi movie. That was helped by the fact that the special effects never looked fake or unrealistic. I don't know how the true Trekkies will receive this movie...but the true outsiders will love it as a movie for moviegoers, and not just a movie for fans.
