In the past 30 years, there is only a hand full of Science Fiction movies that left me stunned the way DISTRICT 9 has. They are: Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, Terminator 1 & 2, RoboCop 1, The Road Warrior, Blade Runner, Alien, Aliens, The Matrix, John Carpenters The Thing, Star Wars & The Empire Strikes Back. And yet this movie does not feel at all derivative of any of its predecessors.
Now that we have NEILL BLOMKAMP the following directors must end their lives and have the negatives to all of their movies destroyed: McG, Stephen Sommers (with the exception of Deep Rising), Roland Emmerich, Jonathan Mostow and Michael Bay (with the exception of all the footage of Megan Fox).
DRAG ME TO HELL IS AWESOME! Its like CURSE OF THE DEMON with a tad of THINNER mixed with EVIL DEAD 2 (w/ Alison Lohman in the Ash role) & a good dose of POLTERGEIST for good measure!
For everyone who is tired of & hates re-makes & sequels: THIS IS THE HORROR MOVIE YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!
We all know that Catholic schoolgirls rule! But this movie is priceless! Not for the reasons you'd suspect either. Many like to compare this to Heavenly Creatures which is a mistake. Joel Seria, the writer director used that case as a springboard to tell his own fictional story. Even though this film teeters on the brink of exploitation it never fully goes there which is one of the things that keep it an interesting serious film. At the very beginning of the film the two girls declare themselves to be wicked satanists but through the entire movie they retain a level of childhood innocence & playfulness which I found to be quite refreshing and makes for a good set up for the shocking and amazing finale.
A little bit a Papillon mixed with Lord of the Flies & Battle Royale & Escape From New York in the Gulag. Unfortunately I saw the two hour version. But still amazing!
