The Long Goodbye
Great mix of humor and noir. I think the scene where Marty Augustine meets Marlowe for the first time is powerful enough to make the movie worth watching...also a bonus laugh as it is Arnold's 1st (or 2nd) film...

I think this movie is quite well acted and has an excellent script. Refreshing to see a film about relationships and love that is actually written for adults. I find it unfortunate how many people judge this movie on the basis of it being "sad" or "negative". Interestingly, this comes from both those who enjoy and disdain it, the former because they've been hurt before too, the latter because they believe in romanticist fiction regarding how things 'should' be (sometimes folks that hate it are boring types that prefer wooden unrealistic romantic archetypes to down and dirty real human beings in their love stories). I do not think the movie is negative actually...I believe it aims for realism. In this regard it is exaggerated at times perhaps and occasionally fails, but the movie maintains a consistent artistic vision throughout that shows many of the wonderful and horrible aspects that go along with the vunerabilities, attachments and difficulties of being in a committed loving relationship. I think the movie takes a few shortcuts in developing relationships between characters, but does so to remained focusing on critical relationship moments, leaving more mundane developments and activities unstated...this is good here...I'd rather not be bored to death ala Lost in Translation. Whatever is occasionally missing, I believe the treatment of relationships here is much more compelling and interesting than what one typically finds in American movies and culture.

Fucking brilliant. Worth watching both for its hilarious vulgarity and for what it demonstrates about our culture vis-a-vis those that borat interacts with and impacts in the film.
