Once - R The best things about the film: hearing the music and watching natural chemistry between the two leading characters unfold. Apart from purely entertaining, most films (good or bad) succeed in exhibiting a heightened reality with only sparse moments of human truth to make that emotional connection. This film however felt very true to life, and I almost felt like I was watching a homemade documentary that somehow captured all the impromptu jam sessions or recording projects or even simple moments with friends or family that this pair experienced. Raw and precious and poignant all at the same time. Loved it. January 9, 2008

Juno - PG-13 At first the dialogue is a bit too sardonic and annoyingly self-aware in its rapidfire riposte with obscure cultural references (think Gilmore Girls); however, the film won me over because of the acting, wonderfully fitting soundtrack and the way the characters developed: we fall in love with Juno of course, but the yuppie couple (played by Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner) provided an unexpected emotional arc. (I had only seen Ellen Page in X-3 as Kitty-can't-remember her last name-the chick who walks through walls) But she's awesome in this role. January 3, 2008

Whisper - R I don't usually like these kinds of movies but being a fan of Lost and Prison Break, I thought it would be interesting to see Sawyer and Dr. Tancredi in a movie together. They both did a great job in their roles, although I'm sure Josh is slightly typecast since he plays a conman in this movie as well..

It's not greatest scary film around, I'm sure (not that I've seen a ton of them anyway) but I thought overall it was pretty good. The kid was CREEPY with an extra side of creepy. I never saw the Omen and don't plan on it but I imagine it was a bit like that.

It's a creepy kidnapping flick with a twist.

Enchanted - PG Reasons to love this movie:

Disney has finally mustered the guts to make fun of itself.

James Marsden: oh how I miss thee in Second Noah...

Amy Adams kind of weirded me out in the preview so I was a bit skeptical, but in the actual film she did an incredible job of bringing a cell-animated princess to life. It also makes you wonder if Aurora, Snow White, Cinderella, and all the classic princesses would seem crazy if they got transported into reality as well..

The location: I love any movie shot in NYC, especially when they included happy montage sequences in Central Park... Sorry, it's the New York girl in me...

The sheer production value: it's a classic animated Disney film, a live musical, CGI-special effects-laden fantasy, romantic comedy all jumbled into one. While that might sound like a headache with all those genres thrown in the pot together, it actually plays quite nicely.

My only problem with this film (and why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5) is why the heck did they cast Idina Menzel in a supporting role in a MUSICAL, and not write a freakin' song for her to sing?! That was cruel, Disney, way cruel, ESPECIALLY when you had Stephen Schwartz writing the lyrics for the songs?! Bad form, bad form, indeed. Gah...

By the way, if they ever make Wicked into a movie, they should cast Idina Menzel as the lead and have James Marsden be Fiyero.

The Golden Compass - PG-13 Whoever cast Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra knew exactly what they were doing. She perfectly captured all of Lyra's wild energy and rebellious nature.

The scenes with the polar bears were by far my favorite. So what if he was typecast, I liked Sir Ian McCkellan's voice acting contribution as Iorek Byrnison. And all that CGI stuff with the daemons was cool...

But overall, there was too much explanatory dialogue and not enough actual storytelling. The film's pacing seemed a bit off. I also think the film did a disservice by excluding the last three chapters of the book. It made the film feel incomplete, rather than an interesting lead-in to a sequel.

Beowulf - PG-13 I honestly don't know if I would have liked this movie if I hadn't seen it in 3d, but visually it certainly was exciting. The fight scenes with Grendel were particularly grotesque to see in 3-d. I am always interested in the epic, so if you like battles, fantasy, monsters, dragons, etc., this is the mother story of all fantasy literature today, so it's definitely worth looking into.

Just a note.. they did change the story significantly, in regard to the role of Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie's role...) but I actually think the artistic license serves the story well and doesn't "mess with the original" in the way you might think...
