Shigatsu monogatari (April Story) (1998,  Unrated)
Shigatsu monogatari (April Story)
April Story's main criticism has always been people expecting another Love Letter. Personally I think its every bit as good as it manages to portray the exact themes of warm hearted love and magic found in Love Letter without using the same conventional story telling techniques. Its not groundbreaking but has the ultimate umbrella and rain scene.

Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) (1988,  G)
Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)
The simplicity of the story and the ever endearing beauty of the characters make this the animation that everyone must see. It's life affirming magic. I love Totoro.
3
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001,  PG-13)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Has Kubrick's cold contemplative feel and Speilberg's child like magic. The two balances out to make the best Kubrick movie he did or didn't direct.
4
RoboCop (1987,  R)
RoboCop
Sci-Fi Explosion like you've never seen before. Too cool for words.
5
Spartacus (1960,  PG-13)
Spartacus
Kubrick's last "hollywood" effort is also his most complete movie. A perfect example of two clashing giants (Kubrick and the studio) coming together to make the finest epic on celluloid.
6
Love Letter (1995,  PG)
Love Letter
Welcome to the world of Shunji Iwai. His defining movie of everything that is good and wonderful in this world. Life is simply beautiful and everyone in it is too.
7
Dirty Harry (1971,  R)
Dirty Harry
The cop movie standard where the criminal is just as memorable as the anti-hero. Contains many firsts for me including the fine line between right and wrong.
8
Vertigo (1958,  PG)
Vertigo
A romance at its heart. Edgy, frightening and tragic. My Hitchcock of choice.
9
Christmas in August (Palwolui Christmas) (1998,  Unrated)
Christmas in August (Palwolui Christmas)
A masterpiece on why the intimacy between two people will always be the essence of our happiness for now and beyond.
10
The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Stunning technical film making. This is modern cinema at its very finest. A blueprint on how to combine multiple cinematic elements together into one perfect film.

Fa Yeung Nin Wa (In the Mood for Love) (2001,  PG)
Fa Yeung Nin Wa (In the Mood for Love)
Focused on a single plot WKW pulls out his most complete and fulfilling movie. An arthouse classic that will endure for a 100 years and more.
12
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.) (1966,  R)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo.)
Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone takes a tired formula and turns it on its head. This will always be the western epic standard for me.
13
Planet of the Apes (1968,  PG)
Planet of the Apes
Sci-Fi adventure started here with me. From the final moments of the film I knew sci-fi was going to be my favourite genre. Defined my taste for movies.
14
Annie Hall (1977,  PG)
Annie Hall
Woody Allen has been doing comedy for most of his life. He was funny in the 50s and he is still funny today. My comedian of choice. Laughter makes the world a better place.
15
Blade Runner (1982,  R)
Blade Runner
It takes a lot of effort to analyse why this should be good. If you do you won't like it. Just sit back and look at the 1st rate production and listen to the etheral score by Vangelis.
16
The Untouchables (1987,  R)
The Untouchables
Dirty Harry in the 70s and Untouchables in the 80s. Who do you trust when everyone around you is corrupt. Unlikely heroes can turn the tide around. Makes you feel good watching justice being served.
17
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
The modern epic that every film goer should see. The finest trilogy ever made.

The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
Action packed.
20
The Godfather (1972,  R)
The Godfather
Incredible character study brought to life by incredible actors. Its the actors you watch this for. As the years pass I now prefer this over the 2nd one.
21
The Godfather, Part II (1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
Watched together with the first part, this is more exciting from a overall film perspective. The director honed his skill of story telling here to perfection.
22
The Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) (1954,  Unrated)
The Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai)
A 3 and half hour epic that feels like its only half as long. Old movies don't tend to age well but this is as good today as it ever was.
23
Starship Troopers (1997,  R)
Starship Troopers
Verhoeven continues is sci-fi trilogy for adults. Fantastic action set pieces you haven't seen before from the very start to the very end, stringed together by great characters that seem to have little depth.
24
Total Recall (1990,  R)
Total Recall
Verhoeven does sci-fi again and no one does it better. He combines story, action and ideas into one helluva movie.
25
Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West) (1968,  PG-13)
Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West)
Does Leone need Clint in his westerns? No He doesn't. A fine example of his amazing western catalogue.
26
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.) (1950,  Unrated)
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.)
Multi-layered story about love, fantasy and the harsh realities of life. See it before its too late.
27
Xin buliao qing (C'est la vie, mon chéri) (1994,  Unrated)
Xin buliao qing (C'est la vie, mon chéri)
Before I watched this I thought all HK movies were basically crazy kung fu action stunts. This came like a bolt of lightening and I instantly fell in Love with Anita Yuen Wing Yee who is amazing in this. Derek Yee instantly became my favourite HK director and I've been praising his ability for story telling and character development allowing his actors to breathe which is virtually impossible for the HK movie industry.
28
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) (2002,  R)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
An incredible film about tragic consequences leading one after another unable to stop. Visually striking the director's eye for composition is breath taking. Perfect visuals, stark soundtrack and great actors make this a film for people who take their films seriously. "The movement of money creates capital" ...
