Magic Mirror on the wall, who’s the brightest producer of them all? Well Walt Disney of course! At least in 1937 he was after turning his so-called “folly” Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs into the highest grossing animated film of all time. Disney was apparently enamored with the traditional German fairytale of Snow White by the Brothers Grimm, since age 15; so it seemed only fitting that his passion for animation would use that story for his first full-length animated feature film. Critics of Disney called him a fool, but now after various animated successes (and let’s not forget about the theme parks) Walt Disney is a household name all around the world. Appreciated by millions, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is also still a bright and shining film viewed and purchased as much now as 30 or more years ago. It has all of the qualities of a timeless fairytale: a princess in distress, an evil queen/step-mother, a brave prince, and seven silly dwarfs. Add a little deception here, some music there, and a poison apple…and vwaa-la! You have a hit! Well, actually it wasn’t that easy for the Disney animators, but what they did achieve was a great triumph in animation for that time period. Overall, I can see why this film is historically significant (first full-length animated feature film in the USA) and how it still sells hundreds of copies a year (every little girl wants to be a princess), but personally, I’m kind of glad all of the Disney princesses don’t talk like Snow White!
Personally, I love this film! Marilyn Monroe, while no Audrey Hepburn, is still a powerful actress in this time period due the sex appeal she ooze’s. Paired up with great actors Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, this humorous trio weaves us through a wonderfully executed plot. Curtis and Lemmon must hid from the mob in this film and to do so they disguise themselves as women playing in an all-female band. However, when Curtis meets Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) he finds that leading a double life as women and man is not as easy as you would think! I have visited Coronado Beach in California where this movie was filmed and was really impressed by the location. My personal e-mail is actually named after Marilyn Monreo’s character in this film- sugarcane59- the 59 being for the release date. =) Overall, I really enjoyed this over the top at times comedy!
