Blade Runner (1982,  R)
Blade Runner
I first saw this movie when I was a kid. It blew my mind then, and it continues to do so to this day. The storyline is incredible and speaks to our human frailty and weaknesses. We take life for granted, but the Replicants, who only have a lifespan of a few years, treasure life and try to experience in less than ten years what we go through in a lifetime. Too bad they think that murdering others is okay so long as it prolongs their own lives! My favourite quote? "It's too bad she won't live - but then again, who does?" - Gaff
It's wild to view Ridley Scott's vision of a dystopic future, where pollution has darkened the skies and the gap between rich and poor is very pronounced. This movie is worth watching over and over again. It was the movie that made me a Rutger Hauer fan.
If you see it, make sure you view the Director's Cut instead of the original version.

The Lost Boys (1987,  R)
3
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005,  PG-13)
4
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
This movie has you on the edge of your seat the entire time...it fills you with awe, dread, and sadness - sometimes all at the same time!
5
Hellboy (2004,  PG-13)
6
A Beautiful Mind (2001,  PG-13)
7
28 Days Later (2003,  R)
28 Days Later
One of the scariest movies I have ever seen, with a great twist at the end. And let me tell you, these zombies are FAST. It makes you wonder how the dolts in other zombie movies could possibly get caught by the shuffling, groaning kind of undead.
On a serious note, this film brings up some ethical issues that are very thought-provoking.
And as an added bonus: Cillian Murphy is freakin' hot.
8
The Abyss (1989,  PG-13)

Big Trouble in Little China (1986,  PG-13)
Big Trouble in Little China
For sheer cheesy entertainment, I can't think of a better movie than this (except, say, Kung Fu Hustle). Kurt Russell is so freakin' funny with lines like "You know what Jack Burton always says in a time like this..." and "SON OF A BITCH MUST PAY!" etc. Lo-Pan is up there with the greatest bad guys EVER. Remember the Hell of the Upside Down Sinners? Or Lo-Pan threatening to send Jack and Wang to "the Hell where people are skinned alive!!" And who can forget the evil wizard and the good magician fighting it out with their strange cosmic Nintendo game?

I watched this again last night, for the umpteenth time, and still laughed my butt off. I HIGHLY recommend it.
17
Annie (1982,  G)
18
Almost Famous (2000,  R)
19
Grease (1978,  PG)
20
The Addams Family (1991,  PG-13)
The Addams Family
I can't say enough about this movie. It's brilliant and morbidly hilarious. Anjelica Houston was born to play Morticia Addams, just as Raul Julia was born to play Gomez Addams! Actually, the ENTIRE CAST is superb!

Every time I watch this movie, I find something I missed, which causes me to laugh harder than I did the first time! I highly recommend this movie to ANYONE. It blows away the original TV show as well as the TV remakes. Fantastic, and well worth the watch!
21
Addams Family Values (1993,  PG-13)
Addams Family Values
As hilarious (if not more) than the first one. A great storyline that centres (again) around Uncle Fester (brilliantly played by Christopher Lloyd) as a scheming black widow entraps him into her web. My favourite lines are these words, spoken by Morticia:

"You have gone too far. You have married Fester. You have destroyed his spirit. You have taken him from us. All that I could forgive. But, Debbie..."

"What?"

"Pastels?"
22
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1993,  PG-13)
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Ace Ventura movies all into the category of those rare films you can watch over and over again - and they seem to get funnier every time you see them.

I'm still waiting for Jim Carrey to dump Jenny McCarthy for me. Still waiting...
23
Ace Ventura - When Nature Calls (1995,  PG-13)
24
300 (2007,  R)
300
I avoided seeing this movie for a long time, because it was done by the same guy who did "Sin City" - and I thought "Sin City" was a revolting, torture-porn, pointless bloodbath.

But after seeing "300", I now realize that "Sin City" doesn't even deserve to share the same UNIVERSE as "300"! This movie is rich in storyline, characterization, emotion, action...I could go on and on. And it is also hyper-violent. However, the violence fits the historical context; it also happens very fast, and the blood gushing and spurting everywhere is done in deliberate cartoon animation - which I think was a brilliant idea.

The story itself is something I found very inspirational on a personal level. The historical battle of 300 Spartan warriors against a MILLION invading Persions can be used as an analogy for any of the massive difficulties we face in this life. May we always face our problems head on with courage, sword held high, screaming a battle cry!

"SPARTANS!! PREPARE FOR GLORY!!!"

Big Fish (2003,  PG-13)
26
Dead Poets Society (1989,  PG)
