1
Lord of War (2005,  R)
Lord of War
You spend two hours wondering what could possibly happen that could "rescue" this film -- and then it just explodes, brilliantly, right on schedule, with two minutes left to run, like a perfectly made bomb.
2
Napoleon Dynamite (2004,  PG)
Napoleon Dynamite
The ultimate answer to those who say that two wrongs don't make a right. EVERYTHING is wrong with this, and it's perfect.
3
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
40 years old this year -- and still as fresh as ever. To fully appreciate this one, you need to somehow detox your system of all the bad sci-fi it inspired in those four decades.
4
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001,  R)
The Royal Tenenbaums
Superb soundtrack, cracking script, great performances. Not a comedy -- which explains a lot of people's unmet expectations -- but rather a meditation on the lies we tell ourselves, and others.
5
The Godfather (1972,  R)
The Godfather
A film that changed everything -- and defined the careers of everyone involved in it. 3 hours of awesome.
6
Rushmore (1998,  R)
Rushmore
The "quirky" tag sells this film way short. From the famous "revenge" montage to the perfectly depicted relationships, it's all brilliant.
7
The Usual Suspects (1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
Wonderfully hard-working performances from everyone combine to make this just terrific fun.
8
Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
Heroically made. Heroically flawed. Heroically brilliant.
9
The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
If you want yet another rom-com, or your cinematic needs are fulfilled by "scary movies", then please don't watch this film.
This is complex, layered, dark, and brilliant. It leaves questions unanswered. It breaks dramatic conventions.
So if that's your cup of tea, why haven't you seen this already?
10
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999,  R)
The Talented Mr. Ripley
An almost unbelievably faithful rendition of Highsmith's classic novel. Brilliant in almost every way. Minghella should teach a masterclass in adaption!
