The Long Goodbye (1973,  R)
The Long Goodbye
Through its casual, understated, "homage-to-L.A." style, Altman's film draws in the patient viewer who can appreciate what he's being presented. Gould is similarly casual as he maneuvers the serio-comic central role through the film's landscape of seedy bars, misfit characters, and palpable tension. In my opinion, the film is amazing: one of the best examples of the small, unique, "this is my little movie" movies.
4
Stardust Memories (1980,  PG)
Stardust Memories
Maybe my all-time favorite Woody Allen film. Intelligent, sophisticated, very Fellini-esque (I know, it's supposed to be), but surreal and humorous--simultaneously.
5
The Landlord (1970,  Unrated)
6
Klute (1971,  R)
7
Petulia (1968,  R)

I love this movie! It is soooo good, and the editing is waay ahead of its time. So there.
8
Harold and Maude (1971,  PG)
Harold and Maude
I love Bud Cort in this film. And it's a good one. Ashby's take on life and exuberance and gusto are all handled with warmth and sophistication.
9
Repo Man (1984,  R)
10
Two-Lane Blacktop (1971,  R)

Brewster McCloud (1971,  R)
Brewster McCloud
This movie is a trip. It's themes are elusive, and its actor-palette a wonderful mix of colors and styles that blend together nicely, creating a surreal, intriguing film.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
In drama courses at college, they never shut up about this play (or Burton's and Taylor's performances in Nichols' film). The first time I saw the film, I held my mouth agape for about two days. Please follow these instructions:
1. Get some aspirin (extra strength).
2. Pour a glass of bourbon (straight).
3. Press "Play."

Hannah and Her Sisters
I liked it, but its characters' motivations hurt me. Am I getting soft?
Actually, I wanted to care about the film's central characters (of which there are many--and maybe that's part of the problem), but Woody's connective performance was the only dynamic that kept me "in" the movie, really.
