Grindhouse (Grind House) (2007,  R)
Grindhouse (Grind House)
The other night I was privileged enough to see the wonderful Grindhouse. It's Tarantino & Rodriguez's double bill homage to grindhouse cinema; the small dirty back end of town cinemas and its b-grade sleazy flicks. It was wonderfully set in the modest back alley outdoor Luna Leederville setting as it gushed with rain and punters struggled, mostly compacting themselves in a tiny corner where canvas lay above. The smell of a back smoker and later in the night the suspicious flicker of weed all laid its course for one of the funniest, wonderfully self indulgent, cleaver, witty, hilarious, (did I mention) funny, celebratory film.

And if it isn't your cup of tea, at least you get to see Tarantino's cameo stabbed in the eye and Rodriguez battling a zombie which mauls him to death. In-between Planet Terror and Death Proof are some hilarious fictitious trailers directed by friends of Tarantino and Rodriguez and the bad acting, bad scripts, reels of footage missing, is all part of the overall entertainment and celebration of the grindhouse era.

This is a certain for film lovers but understandable as to why it flopped in America following subsequent individual releases of each film separately. If you have a choice between seeing Death Proof and Grindhouse; see the latter, the context will be laid and the satisfaction more rewarding.

Grindhouse screens till up until Wednesday at Luna Leederville Outdoor Cinema and will be appearing one night at the Burswood Outdoor Cinema early next year.

The Kite Runner (2008,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
I am still yet to read the book so I can't place judgment (like so many others) in denouncing this film in comparison to the original novel. What I can say, however, is how lucky I am to see such a wonderful film. It is poetic, engaging, beautifully delivered with great performances from all cast. The story is tragic and spiritual and a very accessible story. The script builds every moment up at the right time and the overall presentation is highly moving. Vastly recommend viewing.

I'm Not There (2007,  R)
I'm Not There
I'm Not There cannot be described as an enjoyable viewing. It is certainly a taxing and straining film and for a lot of people creates inner turmoil over feeling ignorant and confused over a subject you feet you should have relatively known. Having said that, Todd Haynes's attempt at an experimental bio-pic should be commended for its very daring and ultimately provocative strategy. I'm Not There is a film that leads people to ponder as they leave the cinema. Stylistically, this film is brilliant. Each character, performed by a top notch cast, with notable merit to Cate Blanchet, embodies a different filmic style and these individual characters who represent the Bob Dylan legacy are thrown in a blender and served whipped for the audience to unjumble. However the film perfectly crafts its argument that people try and claim to understand the real Bob Dylan (art form and person) whilst on the contrary, he is an incomprehensible and contradictory character. The result sits brilliantly in my mind; this is a true masterpiece of the ages. Bold, pretentious and self indulgent (yet all in good ways), I'm Not There is, beautiful, intriguing and unsettling; a very worthy film for those who don't want to wind down, but really get their mind ticking.
