La oscuridad ronda un pequeño pueblo, las tinieblas del alma humana se esconden en las sombras. Filmada en B&N, utilizando largos planosecuencias que poco a poco van envolviendo una belleza brutal y profunda. Una ballena en medio de la plaza, fosilizada, cuya sola presencia hace escuchar las armonías brutales de la naturaleza humana. Bela Tarr crea un movimiento de cámara que hace comunión con lo que narra a tal grado que sentimos que estamos viendo una realidad que densificada lo humano en un plano, con toda su angustia y dolor. Esta es sin duda una de las más grandes películas de todos los tiempos, que le ha ganado un lugar a Bela Tarr al lado de cineastas como Tarkovski y Antonioni, en cuanto a imaginación del lenguaje cinematográfico.
