Sátántangó (Satan's Tango)
Unrated
The work of Bela Tarr really separates the men from the boys, if I may use a non-PC phrase. Epically long, dismal, depressing, black and white, in Hungarian, it's constantly raining and is relentlessly downbeat. And it opens with an 8 minute shot of a herd of cows. As far as I'm concerned, this is filmmaking of the highest order, and almost no-one currently working can compete with Bela Tarr. In a world where genuine cinematic voices are getting fewer, his work demands to be seen. And of course, this film features the iconic characters of Irimias and Petrina... All hail.
