The Hurt Locker - R This is one of the best films I have seen in ages.

Whilst the direction and acting is fantastic, what really got me was just how tense this film made me feel.

This goes straight into 2009's top 10 list for sure.

Public Enemies - R The cast was brilliant, the direction was brilliant, the score was brilliant and yet, somehow, I found this to be rather unengaging. December 9, 2009

Adventureland - R Sadly, the best thing about this movie is the soundtrack - which, aside from a couple cool tracks, is just ok.

I've seen a few film reviewers give this three or four stars... I guess it must have been out of 10.

Jesse Eisenberg, Bill Hader and Kirsten Kiig are good to watch, but they're given rubbish to work with. If you've seen Kirsten Stewart in Twilight, you've seen her in this... you could copy and paste her expressions/acting from one to the other.

Not worth a look.

Moon - R Utterly brilliant.

Rockwell is AWESOME.

See this without knowing anything about it.

2012 - PG-13 The problem with these types of movies is that, the studio people feel the need to compliment the CGI wonder-destruction with a sappy human love story, or tale of woe.
What they should have done here is, remove that element completely, therefore making the overly-long film a tad shorter and just shown mother nature kicking everyones asses for 120 minutes. But, they didn't.

So, we have the plot: 2/10 (seen it all before and quite stupid in parts)

and the CGI: 8/10 (breathtakingly awesome)

Plot squabbles aside, i really do like Oliver Platt, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor and John Cusack. They do alright with what they're given, which isn't much. Glover phones it in, but he's been doing that since Lethal Weapon.

If you are planning on seeing this very pretty waste of 2.5 hours, i suggest you walk in to the cinema 40 mins late so that you miss all the sappy stuff and get right to the stuff Emmerich does best - blowin' shit up.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - PG-13 I switched my brain off before watching this and it's a good thing i did.

Still, as far as these movies go, this is much better than the waste of time that was Transformers 2.

If you're looking for a big, dumb action movie with loads of (rather well done) CGI, here's your winner.

Surrogates - PG-13 If you overlook the few plot leaps of faith, this is actually pretty entertaining. October 2, 2009

Observe and Report - R Had this been a 45 minute film, it would have been tolerable, but, as it stands, i didn't enjoy it much at all.

My least favourite Seth Rogan film and just generally a below-average movie.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - PG Firstly, i haven't read the book, so i have zero idea how true this film stayed to the source material. That being so, i don't care how true this film stayed to the source material. Righto...

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this film. Personally, i think it could be my favourite of the whole franchise. I really enjoyed the other films in the series, but 'Half-Blood Prince' is the first time i said "wow" to myself during the screening.

I think i enjoyed it so much for 3 main reasons:

1) The actors have all totally hit their stride. They ARE those characters. It's brilliant to see their progression (both in terms of the character development and the actors developing too). Particular note goes to Radcliffe, who totally carried that film, and the actor who plays the crazy white-haired Irish girl (whose name escapes me right now) she stole every scene she was in. Michael Gambon is totally one of the greats, after all, not everyone has their own corner on the Top Gear track... ha ha.

2) I thought the story was brilliant. It has actually inspired to me to finally begin reading the books. I loved the end of the film most - that sense that they will never have just another "normal" year at Hogwarts was amazingly ominous.

3) The directing in this film is the first time i've actually noticed it in a Harry Potter film. I was most impressed with what David Yates did here!

I can't wait to see it again.

Bring on the final two!

Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked) - R I absolutely LOVED this film!

It was funny, brilliantly written, the music rocked and what really stood out was the cast - how could you go wrong with the likes of Emma Thompson, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy and, of course, Philip Seymour Hoffman - seriously, i'd pay to watch him read his phone bill.

If there was one downer here, it's the directing. It seems as if Richard Curtis watched 'The Bourne Supremacy' and thought "hey, i can do that" - it doesn't really work in this case. I know he was trying to give the impression of the boat moving, but it just becomes a tad distracting at times.

However, that minor point aside, this is one of the best films i have seen all year!!

Monsters vs. Aliens - PG I found this to be very entertaining. Up there with the likes of the original Shrek & Kung Fu Panda.

It's worth seeing just for Seth Rogen's voice work for the B.O.B. character, though everyone did an excellent job.

Laughed my ass off on a flight from Perth to Singapore with this.

Terminator Salvation - PG-13 This film started really well, and then, quickly descended into a steaming pile of crap. (If you're going to see it, it happens right after the helicopter scene)

The plot made little-to-no sense and most of the characters (including Bale) were awfully written. The film's two good points were the appearances by Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin.

This is a horrible film, but is better than Terminator 3 (if that's any indication).

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - PG-13 Ok, i've finally figured out what it is that i can't stand about this film - and it kinda relates to the first one.

Transformers 1 was by no means an intelligent action film. It was loud, dumb and very flashy and, overall, not brilliant. That said, some aspects of it worked so well. For example, the whole arrival to Earth bit was done so beautifully (even though it appears that hyper-advanced sentient robots need to crash land onto the planet's surface just like Wylie Coyote for some reason) but The point is, that sequence was awesome - the mix of music (Jablonsky is a champion - well taught by Hans Zimmer!), visuals and (limited) dialogue was pitch perfect for that moment. And that's what Transformers 1 was - a small series of awesome moments, unfortunately surrounded by many dumb ones. This sequel has 2 awesome moments surrounded by 900 dumb ones.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen just accentuated everything about the first film, but not in the correct way. It's almost as if Michael Bay said to the (VERY hit-and-miss) writers "guys... do exactly what you did before, but make it bigger... much bigger" Sequels are meant to advance the story and compliment the original, not copy the structure and increase the volume.

Part of the problem was the scripting. Kurtzman and Orci (the main scribes) sometime hit the nail on the head (hello, Star Trek) and sometimes miss by a country mile (this film and many others they've done) and, the end result, is that Revenge of the Fallen is amazingly DUMB. The plot (if you can call it that) is ridiculous and more elements make no sense than some. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief on more than a few occasions - after all, how many secret missions can the Military conduct with the Autobots when 4 city blocks get destroyed each time they deploy for action? There was so little thought put into this plot.

Another problem with this is some of the cast. Sure they needed to bring back Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox (not that i condoned such an act cause i think they're both AWFUL actors) but i fail to see why everone needed to return. The Military guys (Duhamel and Gibson) had virtually nothing to do and Turturo seemed to only return for some late comic relief.

It's such a shame that they fucked this one up so badly.

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 The terrific cast and backstory are severely let down by a RUBBISH script in this 107 minute example of how not to make a prequel.

While not as bad as "X3: The last stand", it's still pretty lame.

It's a real shame when the best bit about a movie is the opening credits.

Here's hoping Deadpool and Magneto get better treatments than poor old Wolverine.

Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) - R Hands down the best film i have seen this year.

12 year old Oskar is a loner who lives in a block of apartments with his Mum in Sweden. 12 year old Eli moves in next door. Eli is a vampire.

Yes, this is about a Vampire and a boy, but it's not a "vampire film" - it is so much more than that! It is an amazing piece of cinema.

This film shot straight into my 'top films of all time' list and is one i will be buying on Blu-Ray as soon as i can get my hands on it.

SEE THIS FILM.

Fanboys - PG-13 This is basically about 4 friends that plan to break into the Skywalker Ranch in 1998 to steal a copy of Episode 1.

It's not that great. There are a couple funny moments and some brilliant cameos, but, in the end, it's a bit too stale.

However, if you hated Star Wars: Episode 1 as much as i did (and, that was a LOT) it is worth you somehow seeing the last line in the film - though i wouldn't sit through the whole thing to get there.

The force is weak with this one.

Traitor - PG-13 This is well worth a look. Sure, the twist might be a little predictable, but that didn't detract from the film too much. This is chock full of political and religious undertones, but they are presented in such a way that makes one not want to scream "seen it before..." even if you probably have. It's fresh and very well paced.

Don Cheadle is a fantastic actor (so glad he's replacing Terrance Howard in Iron Man 2) and Guy Pearce has to be one of the most underrated actors working today.

And, who would have guessed that Steve Martin, yes that one, could write a story like this. Bravo.

Valkyrie - PG-13 By far, my favourite Bryan Singer film is X-Men 2, followed very closely by The Usual Suspects.

His latest offerings, however, have been a bit on the "meh" side. I didn't like Superman Returns at all and, his latest, Valkyrie balances out to be amazingly average.

I say balances out because there are some great elements to the film, and some poor ones.

The Good:

- Supporting Cast. The likes of Kenneth Branagh, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Terrance Stamp and Eddie Izzard are all brilliant in their roles.

- Story. This is well written and very compelling.

The Bad:

- Tom. He's done two good movies ever... Top Gun and A Few Good Men.

- The Accents. I must say that it's pretty damn strange to watch this film being based in Germany and about German people only to hear all the actors speak in their native accents. It's not horrible, just plain strange.

Overall the film is just ok.

Yes Man - PG-13 In a perfect world, this film would have been riotously funny. But we don't live in a perfect world, we live here - and the film isn't that good.

The problem isn't with the cast - Rhys Darby, Brad Cooper, John Michael Higgins (who was awesome in 'Arrested Development'), Zooey Deschanel and Jim Carrey are all great in their roles, the problem here is that 'Yes Man' feels a lot like a 45 minute film that has been stretched out to 104 minutes... it becomes quite boring.

Aside from this problem, the film is also amazingly predictable. Just once, i'd like to see a movie like this that didn't use the same paint-by-numbers script generator that every body else seems to be using.

I get that it's not meant to be taken seriously and that it is perhaps just another vehicle for Jim Carrey to do his thing - but it really isn't worth seeing much beyond the 45 minute mark.

Great concept, poor execution.
