King Kong - PG-13 A rip-roaring spectacle full of exciting and highly original action scenes. The piece - de - resistance is a fight which has Kong versus a group of ferocious T-Rex's. Although it is quite a long film, the establishing scenes are necessary to help give the characters some grounding and a certain degree of depth. Peter Jackson has proven that he is a highly gifted film-maker. The question I asked myself after watching it was: what would audiences back in 1933 (when the original came out) have thought of this film? December 24, 2009

La Piscine (The Swimming Pool) (The Sinners) - Unrated A really nice film, memorable for Alain Delon and Romy Schneider's on-screen chemistry. The idyllic atmosphere gives way to one of
anxious gestures and forced confessions. The party scene gives you a real sense of the spirit and the innocense of the 1960's, the locations are breath-taking. The remake is worth a watch too but this version remains unsurpassed.

Doomsday - R Post-apocalyptic, Mad Max style, rip-roaring, sci fi flic set in 2035.
Not up to the standard of Mad Max but a jolly good effort nonetheless.
The fight scenes and car chases are well choreographed and the acting is solid enough.

Che: Part Two (Guerrilla) - R A really impressive piece of film-making depicting one of the most heart-wrenching true life stories imagineable. Based on Guevara's own 'Bolivian Diary' the film is set in fantastic locations and has a very strong supporting cast including the wonderful Joaquim de Almeida. November 28, 2009

Cassandra's Dream - PG-13 A really good film. Although Colin Farrell does not impress so much, Mcgregor is on top form, there is an excellent supporting cast and the quality of the script with its clever plot twists helps to add another gem to the Woody Allen canon. November 22, 2009

Changeling - R Clint Eastwood is a superb director. Every film he has directed has been wholly original, thoroughly enjoyable and received critical acclaim.
In this period drama Angelina Jolie shows that she is not just a pretty face with a very decent piece of acting. The mysterious quality to the film is what gives it a special edge and is all the more effective for being realistic. A must see film.

Che: Part One (The Argentine) - R A fantastically bold film. Using Spanish as well as English and documentary footage, Soderbergh takes the time to contextualise the man to the historic events of the day. Del Toro is very convincing as Che, he really has surpassed himself in a far more challenging role than perhaps many would think him capable. I am really looking forward to seeing part two!! Help! - G It's great to see the fab four but the film itself is absolute codswallop. Pitiful in almost every way, the only good bits are the songs that are expertly done by arguably the greatest British band of all time. Why they chose to star in this film is beyond me. One funny scene is where they are skiing and wearing black hats. If you want to see a Beatles film watch A Hard Day's Night - which is a masterpiece. September 6, 2009

Righteous Kill - R A pretty good film. What is really worth watching is the on screen chemistry of De Niro and Pacino in terms of their acting styles and their screen presences. The least good thing about the film is 50 Cent's acting, even though he did not have much to say: it is fair to say that he is far more effective as a rap artist. The narrative does manage to manipulate the audience well with a very nice twist. Give it a shot. September 4, 2009

The Burning Plain - R A pretty original film with beautiful locations and great acting. Not the best stuff Arriaga has directed nor Kim Basinger has acted in but certainly worth a look. August 29, 2009

Red Dust - R A brilliant, totally absorbing film set in South Africa which deals with apartheid and magnificently captures the hatred, the distrust and the horrendous brutality which it condemns in no uncertain terms. The acting is top notch and the strength of the storyline and the originality of the material makes this a must see film. August 29, 2009

The Duchess - PG-13 A hugely enjoyable film with fantastic locations, costumes and acting. Whether or not it is historically accurate shouldn't be important. After all cinema is there to entertain and this film has done a great job of doing so. There are some gut-wrenching scenes, some of which are very realistic. Commendable performances particularly from the main protagonists are handled with the utmost elegance and panache. Crucially the film gives an impression of what women had to put up with even in positions of privilege, which is altogether shocking, and by today's standards, hard to fathom. August 25, 2009

Alpha Dog - R This is a brilliant film about a very tragic true story. The tragedy lies in the murder of an innocent 15 year old boy who was used as a bargaining chip between rival drug dealers. One crazy yob addict owes money to a dealer and it is his brother who is cruelly murdered. The brilliance of the film is the gritty realism and the quality of the acting from the whole cast. There are many moments of excess and foul language not to mention some disturbing violence and disgusting behaviour. August 24, 2009

Factotum - R A thoroughly enjoyable film although it shows the dark side of alcoholism
the scenes are directed and written expertly and Mat Dillon is on top form. Based on the life of Charles Bukowski: a womanising bar- brawling writer who had self destructive tendencies.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona - PG-13 Using Voice -over narrative in modern cinema was a risky undertaking, but surprisingly it worked just fine. The direction and use of location was fantastic. Scarlet Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem all showed great versatility to their acting and the use of Spanish guitar was inspiring. A truly delightful film. July 12, 2009

Quantum of Solace - PG-13 A pretty good Bond but nothing really to write home about. Sure there are car chases, boat chases, beautiful women and exotic locations, not to mention the most deranged baddies. However there is something missing here. It is all a little too high-tech, too fast and too little in the way of living up to the high standards set by earlier films. Still worth a watch though. July 8, 2009

Pride and Prejudice - PG In all honesty I am not a fan of Jane Austen but I loved this film. The location of Chatworth house was instrumental in creating the right atmosphere and evoking the past. Keira Knightley stole the show, the only criticism would be a wooden Mr Darcy for much of the film. Donald Sutherland gives an understated performance, which is unusual for him and Judy Dench as Lady Catherine gives yet another memorable performance, although she is only in the film in a 3 or 4 scenes.
