Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'enfants) (2004, R)
Fantastic portrayal of an addictive obsession. But if someone calls this "romantic" perhaps you should run. Quickly. (!!) Many critics seem confused by the film's increasingly dark tone, since it started so gosh darned innocently enough. I think this change in tone is necessary to show the progressively sick obsession from which the characters elect not to escape. And if it didn't begin sweetly enough, how would we (or Julien & Sophie) be drawn in to begin with? But I can see how, expecting a cute, slightly aritistic French love story, (YES,like Amelie) one could feel they "got the old bait and switch", and walk away with a big "WTF" in mind. |

My Summer of Love (2004, R)
Brilliantly captures the heady recklessness of losing yourself in "the other". You'll identify if you've ever been carried away... I won't give away any endings here- I'll just say it was quite the adventurous ride! Lovely choices by the DP, excellent sound editing, casting and acting. The scene with the girls confronting the singer on stage is surreal and perfect. I could analyze so many scenes, but I don't want to over-think it. My favorite of a genre that could be called "What I Did On My Vacation." Which I thought was a line in an X song... can anyone help with that one? |

Almost saw this at Saugatuck's Waterfront Film Festival. The summary, which repeatedly used the term "gal pals", steered us away. Nevertheless, we love love LOVEd this in the theater. : D |
