Sweet Smell of Success (1957,  Unrated)
Sweet Smell of Success
"When you die will you go to cat or dog heaven"This rates as one of the finest examples of 50`s noir .However it works even better as a depiction of the grubby underbelly of show buisness and the media. A world of hungry press agents, corrupt politicians and cops aspiring stars and power mad columnists.Where words are as lethal as any weapon. Quite simply great

All About Eve (1950,  Unrated)

Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
Based on Conrad`s heart of darkness. This film sums up that source novel`s title perfectly .Capturing the insanity of war ,a scathing indictement of the vietnam war(its colonial under currants) and scrapes the very depths of the soul.Highly recommended
4
Memento (2000,  R)
Memento
One of the most inovative thrillers in cinematic history. By subverting the tradtional linear narrative structure creates a new Dynamic where the audience can never be certain of the morality motives or choices of the lead Characters or the Direction of the Story rewinding (as opposed to unfolding before them)Coupled with an excellent plot and performances. In a word Brilliant
5

The Usual Suspects
This Film has one of he finest and best known twists in cinema.Yet it it is Singers direction that the film works best as a study in miss direction that holds the attention of the viwer throughout drawing you in before hitting you with it denoument. very good indeed especially after a second viewing
6
The Duellists (1977,  PG)
The Duellists
Argubly Ridley scott`s finest film, despite being his first .A majestic and self contained tale or more a accuratly a character study adapted from Conrad`s short story. This Film perfectly encapsulates themes of honour and obsession with an astounding attention to detail (you even see the changing fashions of the Grand Armee) all against the epic backdrop of the Napoleonic wars .Fantastic

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
an uneven if satisfying conclusion to the saga
featuring on the one hand the epic and brilliantly staged showdown between Luke,Darth vader and the Emperor on the death star yet balanced out by the absurd events on Endor with the Ewoks( who i despised even when i was six).Yet it manages to hang together to tie up all lose ends. All in all not bad and better then the prequals that were to follow but not comparable to The Empire Strikes Back

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy-disc 3 (2004,  Unrated)
22
From Russia With Love (1964,  PG)
23
The Proposition (2005,  R)
The Proposition
an excellent retelling of that most american of genres (in terms of setting at least) the western although thankfully taking its cinematic lessons from Sergio Leone .It loses none of its force and power when set in the dark dreamscape that is the australian outback (Hell has never looked so beautifull),an excellent unyeilding and uncompromising look at the australian frontier during the 19th century mixing themes of honour, family, imperialism and race.Very slow and winding in places yet the path taken by the viewer is a worth while one .Great performances especially by Guy Pearce and ray winstone in particular .
Ps Nick cave was the writer not the director !!!
