Surprising dark and boring movie about an unhappy child (probably with ADHD or an anxiety disorder) who invents an imaginary world to deal with his personal demons. Each monster represents a part of his personality (and one his disinterested sister who doesn't know how to deal with him). The main point of the movie is that no "king" or magical force is going to rescue you if you're unhappy. That's just the way it is. The dominant monster is angry, self-destructive, and over-sensitive (thinks everything is a personal attack on him). Voiced perfectly by James Gandolfini. The movie closes with the exhausted and frustrated mother passing out as her awful child fills his face on cake for supper. Morbid stuff. The only scene that appealed to my kids was a dirt clump fight (kind of like a snowball fight). This movie is NOT FOR KIDS. It's for psychology buffs - odd considering it's based on a cute kid's storybook. |
