The Exorcist (1973,  R)
The Exorcist 5.0 Stars
Saw this after a band competition in Junior high. A student teacher took a big group of us eager to be scared by the re-release. Her head spun around and I ran out of there and called my mom & dad to come get me. AWESOME! I watch it a few times a year. The acting and direction are perfection and the screenplay by Blatty is little more than the perfection of his story in a new medium.
They couldmn't make this movie today. ARE YOU KIDDING!?!?

I've enjoyed this film since I was a kid and recently bought it on re-mastered DVD. It's a bit like a long episode of Star Trek sans the usual crew, of course. I highly recommend it for those long weekend evenings in Autumn. Something about classic science fiction and brisk air make one want a warm cider and a snuggle-bunny.

Helen Mirren has been a favorite actress of mine since EXCALIBUR and CALIGULA. She's magnificent in this film as is the supporting cast.
I was a big Diana fan and like most was shocked when she was killed. The depth of illumination this screenplay gives to the family drama of this international incident is remarkable.

I don't understand the beef with this movie! People rating it low because it isn't Brokeback? Listen, if you have never had a drink in a gay bar or cruised or stripped or shot in a drag queens eye or wanted CHEESE on your FRIES or been locked out of your apartment or had a HORRIBLE roommate or lost your keys or sang at Marie's Crisis or worn UNDERWEAR then you can bitch.
This movie is exactly what it sets out ot be. A simple story acted by appealing actors every one. It has a satisfying ending. It has a song about balls!
Stop being such snooty queens and relax for a minute!
EVERYONE SHOULD OWN AND LOVE THIS FILM. If you don't, I don't wanna KNOW YOU!!

This movie is the gay ROOTS in a way. It is to the closet what ROOTS was to slavery. Both full of suffering brought on by society's inequities. Both stories full of hope.

I HAVE to rate it a 5 because I worked on it for a few weeks and can be seen in the opening scene. Barbara Hershey was wonderfully warm and nice on set.

The Last House on the Left (1972,  Unrated)
The Last House on the Left 3.5 Stars
You'd swear you were watching a snuff film or at LEAST witnessing criminal treatment of professional actresses. This first film for Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th) and Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street series) was shot on such a LOW budget that you can't believe there were actors hired or costumes or sets or anything other than a documentary being made. The hand-held camera work, the despicable dialogue and the depraved situations all conspire to lend this poorly acted trash an unexpected boost to the heights of horror porn now also occupied by SAW and HOSTEL.

What can one say about Peter O'Toole in a porn movie? Other than "THAT was DIFFERENT!" I mean?
SEE THE UNCUT VERSION if you're 18! Everyone's naked and the sex is EXPLICIT. The bonus DVD features are worth the price of admission. OBVIOUSLY interviewed before he knew Guccione was filming porn scenes on the sets at night for inclusion in the finished film, Gore Vidal gives heady insights into his screenplay....later takes his name OFF the film.
The prodigious bonus features add to the rare experience of watching a film self-destruct spectacularly from interference by the new producer, Penthouse Magazine founder Bob Guccione.
Schadenfreude at it's finest!

I ADORE this movie. It's the best adaptation of a King novel since Carrie. It actually contains the soul of the story which most King adaptations forget to leave in.
