| It's Complicated - R |
Maybe it's my mood lately, maybe it's my age, but I was delighted by It's Complicated. I read reviews afterwards and was surprised by how harshly the critics judge this chick flick and yet let movies like Avatar and Up In The Air (which I enjoyed) slide by with much less cross examination. I admit I expected very little from this movie, and that probably helped. But I'm certain I would have found Alec Baldwin totally enjoyable in this role under any circumstances. |

| Taken - PG-13 |
I like Liam Neeson's cragly, unusual face. It's a breath of fresh air from the usual botoxed Hollywood perfection. But it's not enough to carry this otherwise contrived thriller. Liam's an ex CIA man out to get the bad guys who have kidnapped his daughter to sell as a sex slave. Of course. If you couldn't guess, he gets them. It's a silly plot, but we're here for the ride, so who cares? I do. Because most of the film is illogical, the supporting cast is distractingly bad and the script is sub-par. Even Paris, my favorite city and where the story takes place - is unimpressive. Perhaps another time, Liam. |

| Public Enemies - R |
Public Enemies has nearly everything a movie-goer could want: Well-crafted art direction, hollywood heavy weights, lots of loud violence and a dash of romance. What's missing? Good writing and character development. Mann relies on style to take the place of substance and indeed, this movie is a sensual experience. We're introduced to Johnny Dillinger (Johnny Depp) as he breaks out of jail in 1932. Director Michael Mann wastes no time taking us along as Johnny robs bank after bank, shooting anyone who gets in his way. It takes about an hour into the movie to start getting some real dialogue and insight into the workings behind Dillinger and those who want him dead (Christian Bale and Billie Crudup). And though Dillan's not portrayed as a hero, we're meant to be on his side. But why? Perhaps if he or the movie were more poetic... |

| Up - PG | Pixar's unique story lines usually keep things fresh. They are brilliant at capturing subtle expressions, bringing animation to life. But in the movie UP, adorable characters take the place of interesting ones and precise technical execution replaces any potential soul. UP relies on formulaic sentimentality to make its way through 90 minutes of an ultimately forgettable chain of events. | June 14, 2009 | N/A | |||
| L'Heure d'été (Summer Hours) - Unrated | Three siblings and their spouses meet up outside of Paris and sort out the business of deciding what happens with their mother's valuable belongings after she passes away. I enjoyed the story line and typically European slower pace of the film. The characters, however, left me unengaged. | June 12, 2009 | N/A | |||

| Il y a Longtemps que Je T'aime (I've Loved You So Long) - PG-13 | If you weren't already a fan of Kristin Scott Thomas, you will be after seeing this film. Scott Thomas' beautiful, internal performance of a woman trying to re-enter society after serving 15 years in prison is acting at its finest. | June 9, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Okuribito (Departures) - PG-13 | When was the last time you saw a humorous film set in a small Japanese town about preparing the deceased for burial? Departures is refreshing, overly-sentimental and poignant all in one movie. The actor playing the Nokanshi boss is a pleasure to watch. | June 9, 2009 | N/A | |||
