I've never had such an emotional experience at a movie before. It was hard to watch, but it seemed very real and from the moment the film began, I felt like I was able to be there and see it come to pass. The fact that they were speaking the original language made it more real. This wasn't just a violent picture of what one man endured, this was the story of my salvation. This was what my Savior went through because of His love for me. Because of that...the tears flowed and would not stop. Trying to hold back the tears was not an option, so I just tried not to sob so loud that it would disturb the people around me. Gibson made a spectacular film and I believe he never got the credit that he should have for making it. I also thought that Caviezel was amazing. I've always liked him anyway, but this was his best work. I'm not sure I would have even known it was him.
I believe there hasn't been a better Christian film made by a Christian film company. The acting was first rate and the story told beautifully. I still cry after many viewings. It is also one of my favorite books and favorite characters in Christian history. I wish I could have met Corrie ten Boom in person. Just one story from the Holocaust of WW2.
Great classic musical, one of the all time best ever! With Julie Andrews, who is just about tops with her fabulous voice and excellent acting skills. Great songs and a good story. Hard to beat this one. When it first came out in 65, I lived in WY and not near any movie theater. It was a few years later before I got to see it when it was re-released in the theaters. I was very into it.
I thought the entire trilogy was amazing. I bought all the extended versions and they keep me on the edge of my seat with the story. After viewing the films, I read the books. They were also good.
I used to watch this every year on TV when I was a kid. It was probably one of the first musicals I ever saw. I didn't even know the movie was in color for years till I saw it at a friend's house one time and it suddenly went to color at Oz. It was always my favorite as a kid and as an adult, I can still see the attraction to this film. Great story telling, great characters, great songs. It is amazing that it was made so long ago.
Some people were bored by this film, but I loved it! I thought the faith of Eric Liddell was what really made the film so good. My favorite part was when he took a stand at the Olympics and refused to run on a Sunday because he wanted to be in the Lord's house. That always inspired me. I think it told a good story and I always liked the soundtrack, too. The scenes with Cheryl Campbell and Ian Charleson are terrific and I also enjoyed the story of Abrams, played by Ben Cross with the wonderful Ian Holm as his trainer.
I loved these books, so getting to finally see it on film was exciting. I felt that the CGI was great, but not up to par to the standards of films like "The Lord of the Rings" but still very good. Great story. I hope they film all the books.
I remember the first time I saw this movie I was blown away by the excitement and special affects. Harrison Ford quickly became a hero and I was convinced that Spielberg was the perfect film maker. There have been a lot of movies like this but none have come close to being as good in my opinion. Great John Williams score!
I love this movie. Especially the scene in the courtroom when the two ladies say that he's pixilated. This is probably my favorite Gary Cooper film and Jean Arthur is perfect along side of him. Lionel Stander also is very good.
Classic Hollywood story in a Hollywood musical. Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds are great. Donald O'Connor is perfect with Kelly on their songs. Debbie learned to dance on this film and she did a great job. Fun story and Jean Hagen makes a great dumb blonde. Plus you can't get any better than that classic scene where Gene sings "Singin' in the Rain". He makes me want to sing and dance.
A great holiday classic! Stewart is perfect as George Bailey and how he ends up so desperate that he would try to kill himself. It has the evil villain in Barrymore and the funny angel trying to earn his wings. I've seen it several times.
Very fun to watch and Gwyneth is superb. Well done and very humorous. The scene where Emma is cruel and gets put in her place is right on and touching as well as funny.
One of the best Jane Austen films. Emma Thompson is quite good and when she realizes love toward the end, her breakdown is both moving and comical. Thompson did the screenplay, which she was awarded for.
The BBC version with Colin Firth will always be my favorite, but I thought this one was very good. Especially Keira Knightley and Brenda Blethyn. It felt rushed to have the story told in two hours, but a good time watching it anyway. I would be reviewing the BBS version if they only had it on the list. It's 6 hours long, so it is probably considered a mini-series.
I saw this in the theaters when I was a kid and thought it was the best thing I had ever seen. I considered it my favorite film for years. The chariot race was fabulous and bringing in the reality of Christ in a fictional tale was clever. It deserved all the Oscar nominations it received. You need to watch this on a wides screen, or you miss a third of the chariot race.
I know this is a kid's movie, but I had a great time watching it. I even bought it. I thought the way they made the animals talk was the best I had seen up to that point and I found it very funny and charming. It wasn't typical, which I liked. James Cromwell singing and dancing for his pig was priceless! The voice and look of the pig gave it such a great personality!
I think that this could be the best version simply because Hepburn as Jo is such a great choice. However, I have liked all the versions I have seen. It is such a great story.
I have a hard time deciding which version of Little Women I like best, but this one was very well done with a great cast. They did get into some of the family's strange religious beliefs which I thought would have been better left out. Yeah, the feminist feel comes through in this one, too. But the acting is good and Winona Ryder captures the essence of Jo very well. I also liked Claire Danes and Christian Bale. But the winning factor for me is the soundtrack. It is so perfect. It ties the scenes together so well and I just loved listening to it. I still do as I bought the CD. I used to hear it all the time being played for other films' previews.
This film made me a fan of Katharine Hepburn and it is probably my favorite Bogart film. I thought the two of the were so great together and the acting is fantastic. An unlikely pair that are thrown together and find love. It's classic. I loved it as a kid and it is still a fave. I can still picture her in my mind talking about 'going down the rapids'.
Stewart at his best. This was supposed to be a sequel to "Mr. Deeds goes to Town", but Gary Cooper wasn't available, so they changed it to Smith and got Jimmy to do it. I can't imagine it any other way. James Stewart got a best actor oscar nomination for this one and well deserved. (He won the NY Critics Choice) Jean Arthur is always good. One of my favorite Frank Capra films. Makes you wish that politicians today had the heart that Smith has in this movie. I haven't seen it in a long time. I need to get it out and watch it again.
I went to see this film with a friend when it first came out and we were at the theater with the biggest screen in Orange County, CA. When the ship moves across the screen at the start... I was blown away! I had never seen anything like it. The robots and the action was top notch! I watch it now and it feels a bit hokey, and the script was not the greatest, but still a classic! John Williams' score was the clincher. No wonder Spielberg and Lucas use him all the time!
One of Hitchcock's best! That classic scene that you see here is great... being chased by the crop duster...and then the finale on the faces of Mount Rushmore. Lots of good suspense and intrigue.
You can't beat Cecil B DeMille for a Biblical epic. Charlton Heston as Moses was great, and it has been hard to see anyone else do it. They actually followed the Bible pretty well in this one. You could show it in Sunday School to teach your lesson...almost. For the day...the special effects were marvelous. It's long, but there are so many great scenes! This is still the best version telling this story. When I read the story in the Bible, I can't help but picture some of these scenes.
Great musical! One of my favorites. Audrey's singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon except for a couple of small areas, and costumes are outstanding! I got to be in this a few years ago in a community theater setting, and it was great fun. Fun story, and I always thought it ended weird.
I guess this one falls into the "guilty pleasure" category. A musical about women who shoot their men? But I laughed and smiled a lot and some of the songs were a real hoot. But it does get racy and suggestive, so be careful of that. Renee can really sing and it was fun seeing Gere sing and dance, too.
Amy Adams is the reason to see this movie! She is like a cartoon princess come to life! The movie was funny and entertaining and clever and Amy was a joy to watch!
Robert Preston is the best Music Man and Shirley Jones can't be beat in this fun story of a con man who falls in love and finally gives in to it. Great songs and great dances.
Classic! I saw this as a kid and absolutely loved it! Still do. But you really need to see it on a wide screen. Otherwise, a third of the fabulous dancing is cut off. Fun story and fun songs.
When this was first shown on TV, my wife and I watched it and she said it was the closest thing to the books that she had ever seen. She thought all the actors fit the characters perfectly. Follows is wonderful and so are Dewhurst and Farnsworth. (both dead now). I got to play the part of Matthew in a small community production of this play. So, this story is kind of close to my heart.
There was something innocent and fun about this first Superman that I think was never matched. Christopher Reeve was perfect. It tells the story well and there are some fun and exciting things that he has to take care of that made this a great flick. Another great John Williams score.
Grant, Hepburn and Stewart at their very best! A very funny story about a mixed up woman who can't decide who she loves. Good performances all around and lots of drinking so that two of them get drunk. Classic romantic comedy.
Fantastic performances! Sally got a well-deserved Oscar for this one. A heart-felt story about the courage of a widow to survive and show love for your fellow man. Also hits racial issues head on. John Malkovich and Danny Glover are also superb.
This movie made me fall in love with ragtime music and Scott Joplin. Redford and Newman together are a real treat and the fun of watching them sting Robert Shaw and then getting stung ourselves...classic!
My best friend saw this movie and loved it and so did all his kids. They came to visit us and brought the movie and we all watched it over and over. This must be my favorite of all animated films. Not only is it exciting story telling, but it has heart and a good message for families. How many films today remind us of the importance of the family unit?
How can you go wrong when you combine Steven Spielberg with science fiction, aliens, and a John Williams score? I loved that the alien landing spot was Devil's Tower, WY. I used to live not that far from there, and the story of how it all effected the characters and brought them there, was an interesting ride. Great special effects.
I saw this in high school and we all laughed so hard. It still has classic lines and great characters. My favorites are Madeline Kahn doing the bride of Frankenstein, and Peter Boyle when he sings "Puttin' on the Ritz" with Wilder. Also Cloris Leachman (horse whinny) and Marty Feldman. Some of the jokes are racy, so beware of that.
The very best of the bio-pics. Sissy is spot on perfect and her singing ain't half bad either. There have been many good ones that tell similar stories about stars, but this one still sits at the top of my list.
The first time I saw Fiddler, it was a live performance with my acting teacher as Tevye and it blew me away! So, when I finally saw the movie a few years later, I was disappointed. But a second look reminds me of the great story and great songs. I especially love the big production numbers that mixed the Jewish and Russian music and dancing. I always loved the score. I used to have an 8 track that I listened to all the time.
This is on my list because I feel it is an important film. The stark reality of the holocaust hits you in the face if you can stand to sit through it and watch the killing. It has a lot of profanity, especially from one of the main Nazi killers, so be careful of that. Made well and well acted, very moving.
This was the first time that Carrey wasn't over the top crazy. He is quite subdued which only makes this one of his best films. It was a strange concept to have a 24 hour TV show, but quite interesting and fun to see how they made it work. May not be to everyone's liking, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
My favorite Johnny Depp film. I can relate to this character as a playwright myself. It was sad that his marriage failed simply because his wife did not understand who she was married to. I thought it was admirable that he did not allow himself to stray into an immoral relationship. I loved how he made his stories come to life in his mind as he wrote. At the end... Neverland almost became heaven.
Very intense battle scene at the beginning is hard to watch, but very realistic and expertly done. One of the best war films ever. I'm not a huge war movie buff, but this one has a great story and well done. It should have won the Oscar. Watch out for all the bad language throughout....but war times and battlefields probably sound like that. Intense and dramatic and even touching in places. Beautifully filmed by Spielberg, one of his best. It is starring Tom Hanks (which it does not say here) and a large cast of great actors. Catch a moving Nathan Fillian as the "wrong" private Ryan. Jeremy Davies (Lost) is also good, but he'll drive you nuts. I liked Barry Pepper quoting scripture every time he fired his gun. Also when Matt Damon morphs into the older version of himself... that was cool. I could believe that he could become that man.
Streisand at her best. She tied Katharine Hepburn for an Oscar and was perfect as this funny Jewish kid who just wanted to make people laugh. (Real life Fanny Brice) Great songs... People.. Don't Rain on my Parade...My Man I love him So. Based on truth, so that makes it sadder when she and Sharif have problems.
Stallone was a genius when he came up with this story. He was perfect as Rocky and Talia Shire made a great, shy girlfriend. Great music and even though I don't care much for fights, it kept me hooked to the end.
An unusual film to say the least, but a true story. This man was a Christian and had to live his life looking like this horrid monster. I found the film touching when he shares with the doctor what his favorite psalm is. Your heart goes out for this poor man, who is treated as a freak of nature, but really was quite an intelligent and loving person inside. Strange shots and film choices because that is the way David Lynch is. I usually don't care much for his movies. This is an exception.
'Men in drag' movies are usually pretty silly and not worth the time, but Hoffman really out did himself this time. An out of work actor who can only find work if he pretends to be a woman? He is obviously a great actor because he pulls it off and no one knows. As a woman, his eyes are opened to how women are treated, and he learns how to be a better man. Oh....and it's hilarious.
I was one of the people who really liked the Ewoks. I liked the music (John Williams score) which is great in all of them, and this was a nice little wrap up ending.
If they cut out the nudity and the sex scene, it would have been practically perfect. Well, now that I think about it, the love story was a bit cheesy in the mix of the great spectacle of what was the sinking. Very exciting and scary getting through the whole thing, and then overly sad with the death. But the filming of that was over the top and very real.
The actor playing Joseph is marvelous. Very moving performance and worth seeing just for him. It feels real and told well...only the wise men seemed a tad silly and having them arrive on the night of the birth was pretty much not how it happened. They saw the star that night and then traveled there, so it could have been months or a year or so later. But it made for a dramatic ending. Overall, I liked it.
This one stands out as the most accurate, based closely on the book of Luke. Also the most translated movie ever made and shown in more countries and more languages than any other!!
Its fun to just remember all the funny scenes and funny lines from this classic comedy. I love Mandy Patinkin and really loved the scene with Billy Crystal and Carol Kane.
The title should make us think the movie is about John Newton instead of William Wilberforce. But we get Albert Finney as Newton in a great performance (he wasn't my choice but he plays it with much conviction) and Ioan Gruffudd as WW in a fine role. I felt it touched his spiritual side and how hard it was for him to convince Parliament that slave trading was wrong and needed to stop. A great true story.
I saw this as a kid and loved it. This was always my favorite Sidney Poitier movie. My favorite scene was the one where he was teaching the nuns to sing "Amen".
Great songs from this R and H show! I keep singing them for days after watching. Jones and MacRae are great, and so are the supporting players. Even has a creepy villain with a great song about him, too.
I love the Muppets, so this was a lot of fun for me. Being a puppeteer myself, I could appreciate what they were doing and it was done in a very fun and entertaining manner. Great cameos and lots of funny bits. Jim Henson was a genius.
Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr are great. Good songs and entertaining story. But the romance is missing. They don't belong together and the young lovers are not built up enough. Watch it for the great Rogers and Hammerstein songs.
This is another favorite Hitchcock for me, and that is probably because it is Julie Andrews and Paul Newman. Is he a spy? Is she wrong about him? Will they escape? The suspense is there, if not as much as some other films. One scene has a grisly death.
Mel Gibson as a pastor who is struggling in his faith becomes a story of aliens. I know it sounds strange, and this film is probably not for everyone's taste, but I liked the way it delved into the signs that were there to show him how he was to save his family...even from when his wife was dying a horrible death. So, in a way, this became the first spiritual alien film. I had a hard time believing that a pastor would stop believing in God...ask questions, yes... and have a crisis, but not question God's existence.
Gregory Peck at his best. A very good story about race and a person's rights and the court system. Looking at this serious issue through the eyes of a child is quite amazing. We are always too quick to judge before knowing the facts.
I've seen this a couple of times and it is a great film. Caviezel is great as this cop who finds his dead father on his short wave radio, but from 30 years ago. Quaid as the dad is great as he realizes he's talking to his own son in the future. It's fun time travel sort of stuff then it becomes a thriller.
This was the first movie that my best friend and I saw together and it was quite a moving story. Based on a true story of Jesuit priests in 1750, who were ministering to the Indians in the jungle above the Iguassu Falls in South America. It won an oscar for cinematography, and nominated for 7, including best picture. Jeremy Irons plays this loving priest who was truly making a difference among the tribe there. Robert De Niro, plays a repentant slave trader and murderer who joins the mission as a new priest. I believe in grace and in this, he is shown working hard to find forgiveness. But there is a moving scene when he feels forgiven. It was interesting listening to De Niro read First Corinthians 13 from the Bible. This film had a very moving though violent ending that really made you stop and think about how things used to be handled. Some may think it paints a bad picture of the politics of the Catholic church in that time, but it really shows the dedication and loyalty and love of a few good people who wanted to make a difference in people's lives.
It bombed at the box office. It was right when no one wanted to see musicals anymore. Streisand is great, but maybe too young for this part. I still enjoyed her and all the songs. Matthau, not so much.
Great love story and great songs! Modern day Romeo and Juliet, so you know it can't end well. Too bad. Natalie Wood is great and so is Rita Moreno. Amazing dancing and wonderful Leonard Bernstein score.
A classic Billy Wilder film that will always be considered one of the best comedies ever made. Monroe is great and Curtis and Lemmon trying to pretend they are women is great fun. Joe E Brown's final line at the end caps it off!
Lay aside the politics and what you feel about who lied and what went on...and watch this thrilling movie about two men who uncover one of the biggest news items in history. Played out with great suspense, Hoffman and Redford are at their best. Rated R, probably for language, but I don't really remember.
After watching it, I had to see it again, so I begged Sharyn to watch it with me and at the end, she had to see it again, so that made three times for me. But I haven't seen it since. I know the surprise now.
Lots of laughs. So many silly and hilarious bits in this movie. It makes me laugh just to think about it. Now you have to remember that the Monty Python gang are crude and coarse with that bawdy humor that Brits are so known for....so this may not be your kind of film. I used to watch their show on PBS all the time. I think this was their best film.
This movie just made me laugh and laugh. Sure, it is just one joke after another and some of them are dirty, but the classic "and don't call me Shirley" is unforgettable....I still say that line.
Great songs really make this sad Dickens tale a very watchable movie. His characters are wonderfully played and the story gets dark and dreary as his usually do, but the songs are mostly fun and singable. Very entertaining. Ron Moody is great.
It was fun to finally see Mel Brooks playing the lead in one of his comedies. I am a Hitchcock fan, so this was fun to see a spoof of his films. Cloris Leachman is priceless.
A silly story as Jimmy Stewart is a guy who sees an invisible white rabbit. I had the pleasure of being in this play once and played the judge. It was a blast. The funniest scene belongs to Josephine Hull who is fantastic as the sister who tries to have Stewart committed.
I really liked this film in spite of some bad language, especially by John Goodman, but the performances are funny and the story clever, as it loosely follows the Odyssey. I also loved the Bluegrass music all through it and I bought the soundtrack. I thought Clooney was great as well as Turturro and Nelson and Holly Hunter.
Powerful story! When I first saw this film, I admit that I was pretty ignorant about what happened over there in 94. I learned that my cousin was now a missionary there and he contacted me when he discovered that his kids were going to be in one of my plays. This movie was being filmed when they first arrived there and he asked me if I would see it and let him know what I thought. Well...I was quite moved. Cheadle and Okonedo are amazing.
I love time travel movies and with this you get Mel Gibson, romance, and an interesting story...(he gets frozen and then thaws years later) and there is also a young Elijah Wood. Good film.
Classic oldies tunes play all thru this film and the nostalgic feel of being back in 62 with the clothes, hair, hot rods, etc. Charles Martin Smith stands out in this one.
Ron Howard did a great job with a bunch of seniors becoming involved in aliens and hatching cocoons. Ameche, Brimley and Cronyn are great. Fun story. Good Sci Fi fantasy.
The classic film of two dopes trying to take a piano up a huge flight of steps is quite funny. My friend and I drove to the location in Hollywood where they filmed this.
The first time I saw this, I thought it was so funny and such a great movie! It is classic with Oscars too. Probably my favorite Clark Gable movie. What can I say? I love Frank Capra films.
A piece of our American history that I didn't know about till I saw this film. Denzel and Morgan are great in this....and I always like Matthew Broderick. After seeing this movie, we were in Boston and came across the famous statue of the soldiers carved in stone. That was cool that I knew what it meant.
This is an amazing little film. I didn't know what it was going to be like and found it very charming and unique. The acting is very good and the story goes in ways that you may not think it would. Eduardo went through some major changes in his life, spiritually, and has decided not to make the typical sexy stuff that he is used to and focus on films with real meaning and heart. This one has that. He plays a cook at his brother's restaurant and a waitress gets fired and he follows her to talk to her and learns that she is pregnant. She considers an abortion, but changes her mind and he begins to take a real interest in her and her baby. He's not the father... in fact, there is no reason why he should do that. In some ways, I guess you can call this a pro-life movie. I liked how it really gave you a feel of the hispanic life and culture. The girl is really embraced and loved by this wonderful family.
Amazing film about Mozart full of his music and a fascinating story of envy. Tom Hulce makes Mozart a silly character (that laugh!) while still making him real, and F Murray Abraham is the unknown enemy. Is he really to blame for Mozart's death?
I saw this in a great theater with my best friend and it was a lot of fun and excitement and keeping us glued to the screen. A bit long perhaps, but the special effects are the great pay off here! Naomi Watts wasn't half bad, either.
A great old fashioned romantic comedy with two great actors. I love the classic scene where he pretends that his hand is stuck in the stone lion's mouth to scare her.
A lot of great songs in this movie about how the big shows started out in the wild west. You can't get a man with a gun! There's no business like show business!
The best of Gilbert and Sullivan and lots of fun. I got to play the Pirate King in a small production of this and I kept thinking about Kevin Kline's performance the whole time. Linda Ronstadt gets to show off her pipes and everyone looks like they are having a blast. Songs are fun and the script is funny.
The Philadelphia Story put to music with some great singers: Bing and Frank. There are some great duets also.. with the two of them and also Bing and Grace sing "True Love".
Maybe this is not Neil Simon's best script, but it was a very funny take off on mysteries. Great jokes and fun spoofing. A blind butler and a deaf maid? Peter Sellers is hilarious as Wang. Crazy ending.
Any film that has both Katharine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier in it has to be worth taking a look at. I love the interaction between the characters and how they dealt with what was a somewhat controversial subject for that day.
A favorite of my best friend's, it became one of mine too as I watched it with him. A lot of young actors starting out on this one and many of them going on to do some great movies. It's a true story and an exciting and inspirational one. Plus you get Harry Connick Jr. singing.
I saw this on TV when I was a kid and it became a favorite almost like The Wizard of Oz. It had very singable songs and the lovely Lesley Ann Warren. Sure...it was done for TV on a low budget back in 65...so don't expect much.
A classic film taken from a classic play.... very fun and funny. Cary Grant is in top form as he deals with his very strange relations. His aunts actually poison their visitors and have the crazy cousin bury them in the cellar? And they are such sweet old ladies. Wait till Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre show up.
I loved this short story about love and acting. A very shy man ends up being the greatest actor at a community theater. A shy Susan gets to play opposite him and falls in love with his persona, not knowing the real man inside. Very sweet and touching.
A sappy old fashioned romance about time travel. Maybe that is why I liked it...because time travel is interesting to me. Plus this was filmed on Mackinac Island where we visited once, so it has special connections for us. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour make it a great romance...plus some good music to bring it all together.
I know...who wants to watch a movie about a drunk? But Dudley plays a very funny drunk and John Gielgud is hilarious as his stuffy butler. Some of his lines are classic! Dudley: "I'm going to take a bath!" John: I'll alert the media."
Gibson is great in this very unusual film that takes place in Indonesia. Linda Hunt plays a little man that's quite realistic and creepy when you know its not a man. Not sure the point of that... but she was good.
For years, everyone has said that this is Harrison Ford's best acting. Perhaps. It was a very interesting story and an eye opener to the world of the Amish.
After doing Gidget and The Flying Nun, we learned what a powerfully superb actress Sally Field was with this painfully honest look at mental illness. Sally is unbelievable. Her relationship with Brad Davis is very touching.
A very dramatic film about the sad subject of divorce. Hoffman and Streep are great and Justin Henry was also amazing. I loved the Vivaldi soundtrack and bought it.
Redford and Fonda... a great duo, and a fun and funny film about newlyweds struggling to make it in their first apartment. It's really a play and feels like one as you watch it.
A film about the theater. What actor didn't love this story. The show must go on even if the male lead is played by a woman. In Shakespeare's day, women were not allowed to act, so young boys would play the women. So, you have to believe that beautiful Gwyneth can pass herself off as a man. The love story gets steamy and racy and two totally unnecessary scenes are there to give it an R rating. You may want to fast forward a couple times.
Deserved to win the Oscar for best film as this movie hits the subject of race like no other. Rated R for a huge usage of the F word. It tells so many stories all at once that are connected in some way and every actor is at the top of their game.
Even though my best friend hates this kind of animation (he's an artist/cartoonist) and told me not to see it, I still enjoyed the funny story. Plus, Mel Gibson is connected to it.
I'm not a big westerns fan, but this one is a classic and there is a lot of suspense wondering what will happen when he meets the bad guys on the street at noon. Grace Kelly is great as the new bride and Cooper is...well... Cooper. He's perfect.
Everyone says that this is the best of the series, and maybe that is right. I just watched it again recently and it was good, but I will always be partial to the first one.
I discovered this movie several years ago and discovered that I like Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwick and this film was fun. I got the video real cheap and I've seen it a few times. Its a Frank Capra film and I love most of his.
A real hero, was the real life, Jim Braddock. Russell Crowe plays him with a lot of emotion and sensitivity. It is touching to see what this poor man goes through with this family during the great depression. The scene at Madison Sq. Garden where he is begging for money is heart wrenching. Renee is also good as his wife. He was a true man of dignity, courage and faith. A kind and gentle man who truly loved his wife and kids.
I saw this in high school and was so blown away by the acting that I just had to do a scene from it for the theater arts competition my senior year. Out of 99 acting teams, we won first place in the finals, and an overall second place in the festival. So, no scholarship and because of that, I decided to go to CA instead of going to college in ID. Katharine won the best actress Oscar (tied with Barbra Streisand) and she's wonderful and plays great opposite Peter O'Toole.
A very silly, goofy movie that made me laugh a lot. I didn't know till just now that Tim Burton directed this film. Pee-wee goes to the Alamo to find his stolen bike in the basement? A lot of classic and funny lines.
I saw the play done on PBS and loved it. I had taped it, so I watched it over and over. The film is great, too, but never beat that first version I had seen, in my opinion....even though this was done many years earlier. But it is still a great story and Jimmy Stewart is always tops.
This movie (taken from the play) gave Henry Fonda his only Oscar (just before he died) and paired with Katharine Hepburn was marvelous casting. They are brilliant together even though they are old. Jane playing their daughter was a great choice and I think it was the only time they ever acted together. I hear that the characters were not that far from reality in their relationship with each other.
A man with a broken leg has nothing better to do than spy on people out the window of his apartment. Then he witnesses what he thinks is a murder. No one believes him so he tries to solve the crime himself with his assistant, Grace Kelly, who takes things too far. Gets really suspenseful toward the end.
Classic comedy with two who are perfect together: Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Not a complete favorite, but still enjoyable. I can always watch Hepburn.
Sad ending to a great love story. Two people who would never be together end up together. I guess this is a lesson on how opposite political views can mess up a relationship.
One of Ron Howard's best films. Crowe is wonderful as the real life John Nash. I liked how the movie made you wonder how much was real and how much was all in his mind. Jennifer Connelly played a wonderful wife who stuck by him through it all.
Jessica Tandy is a wonderful actress...I always enjoy her. The stuff between her and Morgan Freeman are brilliant in this movie. Dan Aykroyd surprised me, too. It was a sweet story, not an action film and some might find it dull. I liked it.
I'm not a big John Wayne fan, but this movie had a lot of heart. Wayne teaching all these boys how to be cowboys. It's touching. John Williams does a great score and Bruce Dern plays the bad guy again.
This was a very moving film. I wasn't sure I would like it being that I had to read the subtitles for 2/3's of the movie. It was done in English, German and French. Unbelievable that on Christmas Eve...1914, during WW1, the men climbed out of their trenches and joined together out in the open for drinks and to hear this opera singer. All of the film building up to that gave us a feel for each side and these characters and what their lives were like. Based on a real event, but I believe the characters were actually fictional. When I thought the touching sequence was over... it went on... they have a service... (mass) and the next day they come together to bury the dead and play a little soccer. A touching message in a time of war. Just because they are the enemy... it doesn't mean they don't pray to the same God.
I saw this when it first came out and found it riveting and powerful. I was amazed at this man's true story. The actor (Ngor) won an Oscar and he was actually playing a role similar to his own experiences. My favorite scene was at the end when Waterston learns his friend is alive and finds him at a Red Cross unit and they reunite. Very emotional. Too bad they were playing John Lennon's "Imagine"... that didn't work for me. The R is probably for violence.
My best friend says that this is the best John Wayne movie. I watched it with him not to long ago. A John Ford classic with a young Natalie Wood as the one they are searching for.
I heard great things about this film and it did not disappoint. I went a few days ago with Stu and Aaron and Justin. They had all seen it before. I thought it was acted well and told well and very entertaining and well made. Definitely one of the better of all the super hero movies.
"They call me Mr. Tibbs!" Poiteir was never better as a man who just wanted to do his job and found himself among terrible prejudice. The scene where he gets slapped and he quickly slaps back is classic. Steiger is also good.
Judy Garland sings The Trolley Song and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in this nice musical story about a family that has to move from St. Louis. Margaret O'Brien is sweet in this.
Another good Jim Caviezel movie. I thought this film was made well and acted well. This is when I discovered Guy Pearce...also a good actor. This is a great retelling of the classic story.
I had a lot of fun watching this crazy story unfold. Ewan McGregor is great along with a bunch of fine actors playing unusual roles. Perhaps my favorite Tim Burton film. Not like most of his work....though I do like a lot of his stuff.
"I have been wanting to see this film since it has been winning so many awards. I have to say that it was quite a movie. I left feeling so many different things. I found it engrossing, intense, violent, sad, funny, clever, suspenseful, and joyous. You have to read a lot of subtitles as only a small part of the movie is in English, and this is broken English as spoken in India. I found the premise very interesting as this young man finds himself a player of the popular game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" (the India version) and as he is asked each question, you see the flashbacks of his life, childhood and circumstances that came about in his life that enabled to him to know the answers to each particular question. It was far more interesting and involving than it sounds. His life had been so sad and tragic and yet here he was... on this game show and doing quite well (and even that was not working out too well for him). I have heard this film called "A feel good movie" and well, it takes a long time before you actually start feeling good. The film has an R rating, and to me it did not feel like an R movie. More like PG-13. I guess it was for the violence and perhaps some nudity (with children) I'm not sure this is a film for everyone, but I found it very entertaining." -
Another Tom Hanks gem. He is great as the foreigner who is stuck in an airport. Spielberg directed this so you know it is charming. I found it entertaining and clever.
Great performances. A very well made film, very moving and very sad. In fact this important film that looks at the great depression, is even depressing itself. You should see it at least once. Fonda is very good.
A Tom Hanks tour-de-force. Basically a one man show as you watch this guy survive on a desert island. Great acting and sad ending. Wilson is great as his supporting actor and the plane crash scene was very real and dramatic and scary.
Probably my favorite of Woody Allen's films. It hardly seems like one of his movies. I thought it was very clever and fun to have him step out of the movie.
An unexpected little gem. I think a lot of people missed this one. Redford doesn't make enough movies. I thought this was very entertaining and really kept my interest. Based on a true story and it plays out in a fascinating manner. Good cast.
You can't go wrong with the fabulous Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. Meryl just envelops her characters and you forget it's her and just believe she's Julia Child. Amy is delightful as the modern day Julie who wants to cook her way through Julia's book. Stanley Tucci is good as Julia's husband. They did a good job of finding short actors to be around Meryl to make her look tall like Julia. This may not be for everyone, but we really liked it. Sharyn wanted to go home and start cooking. I found it funny, entertaining and a good story with great acting. Wouldn't mind seeing it again. A few bad words and rated PG-13. Oscar buzz on this one, I'm sure!
I've seen at least three of the Harry Potter films and I probably enjoyed the first one the best. There was a lot of talk about the whole witches thing, but I just took it as another fantasy film and enjoyed it for the storytelling and special effects. I am opposed to witchcraft in a real sense, but this is clearly not that. Learning how he first got to Hogwarts School was interesting and then you add in a John Williams score... and you have a fun movie.
Liz Taylor is getting married and Spencer Tracy is her father...well, there are clashes and things get very humorous. A classic comedy! Better than the Steve Martin remake.
Robert Duvall got his Oscar for this one....playing a down and out country singer who finds redemption. Tess Harper plays the quiet Christian woman who decides to marry him and he actually turns his life around. They play down his getting saved by just showing him getting baptised. She never preaches, but her example wins him over.
The Rocky of Bike racing. I really liked Dennis Christopher as the Italy loving cyclist and his pals as they get into this big bike race and work hard to win. A film with heart.
I saw this a few years ago and thought it was quite funny and entertaining. But then, how could it not be with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. They are both great!
I really liked this movie. It had a great look and feel to it as this ape man is brought into society and taught to be a man. Christopher Lambert was wonderful (whatever happened to him?) and Andie MacDowell is beautiful as his Jane. (What's wrong with her voice, so that they felt they should dub it with Glenn Close's) Good cast and fascinating movie.
My wife and I watched this in our bed and breakfast in Santa Barbara, CA on our 20th anniversary. We found it an endearing little movie and Judi Dench is amazing as the Queen. It's fun to see a historic piece that tells a different story from what you might normally see. Like Queen Victoria had this unusual relationship with Mr. Brown after her husband died.
It's hard to do a bad version of Jane Austen film. I remember this one being good. It has been a long time since I've seen it, so I should watch it again.
I need to see this again...it's been a long time. James Dean only made three movies and this one really played up the bad boy image. Natalie Wood as the girl. Jim Backus plays his dad.
A great little James Stewart comedy. Two people fall in love as pen pals, not ever meeting. Well, that's what they thought anyway.... turns out they work together and practically can't stand each other. Fun watching this story unfold, as they learn that they really do love each other, because the letters were touching their hearts.
It's Kathryn Grayson, not Ava Gardner who makes this musical. In fact, Ava doesn't do justice to those great songs she sings. Of course, you know that Howard Keel can deliver the goods. After seeing this on Broadway in 96, the film just really lacked in my opinion. There are some great songs... I wish the Broadway version I saw was on film somewhere.
A Spielberg film that people don't know about and haven't seen. Someone told me about it and I rented it. It is very good. Christian Bale is good as the boy. I bought the soundtrack because I loved the John Williams score.
Hayley Mills plays twins. Great idea and it worked in this Disney film from 61. Maureen O'Hara and Brian Keith are good as the divorced parents that the girls want to get back together.
A remake of a classic? Why? Well, I actually enjoyed this one just as much as the original. Lindsay Lohan does the double act this time and Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson play the parents nicely. Good comedic fun. Lohan actually shows some early acting chops.
True story. I just found this to be a fascinating little movie and Richard Farnsworth is perfect. He is the whole film and it takes its time telling the story almost as if you were riding along on that lawn mower with him. I didn't realize till now that David Lynch directed this. I would have never guessed. Sissy is good as his chain smoking daughter.
Helen Mirren is perfect as the current Queen Elizabeth. I found this a fascinating study of what may have gone on during the ordeal over the death of Princess Di. Good movie.
Adventure and romance in the jungle! This was back when Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas still looked good. It's a fun romp and entertaining. I remember thoroughly enjoying it when it first came out.
A sweet little movie with a wonderful performance by Geraldine Page who won an Oscar. Rebecca DeMornay has a small role playing a nice girl for a change. Bittersweet ending. Opens with a wonderful rendition of "Softly and Tenderly" sung by Cynthia Clawson.
Ya gotta love this funny story about a man who can't seem to get past Ground Hog Day, until he learns to be a better person. Great concept and it's fun to hear Sonny and Cher every morning on the radio. You would think it would get old, but they keep you entertained day after hilarious day.
I saw this years ago and found it very funny and clever. Probably the best thing I've seen Alan Arkin do. Carl Reiner is always funny and Jonathan Winters is always hilarious. Directed by Jewison, too.
A great fun film with Michael J Fox as the kid who goes back in time and finds out his dad was a nerd and has a hard time getting him and his mom together (because she falls for him) and there are good jokes and a great feel to it. Christopher Lloyd is good as the wacky scientist.
I used to love watching Peter Sellers in Pink Panther movies. I thought he was so funny. I don't remember now which ones were the best ones, but this is the original (or was it "A Shot in the Dark"?) and some of the stuff is classic comedy.
More laughs with Inspector Clouseau. Is this the one where the dog bites him and he says "I thought you said your dog does not bite!" "That's not my dog.!
Meryl Streep is always good and she carries this film. A nice story based on fact and with great music and inspiration, especially for music teachers and music students.
A good remake of a great old classic. I thought that Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond were very good and Greg Kinnear is almost always good. Very enjoyable.
The classic Bogart/Bacall mystery film noir flick. You get Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe written by William Faulkner and directed by Howard Hawks. Just watch this one for your classic Bogie role.
I saw this again recently and it was better than I remembered. Intense and very violent.... lots of bloody battles. But a moving story and very well done.
This is another great version of Little Women. I liked June Allyson and Peter Lawford, but I think I still like Katharine Hepburn better. This movie also has Elizabeth Taylor, Janet Leigh and Margaret O'Brien in the cast, and they also played with the story a bit. Not the best version, but they're all good.
Not for everyone. This comes the closest to Hitchcock that I have ever seen. Very suspenseful and keeps you guessing and wondering. Not a pleasant film and not what you would expect. Matt Damon is excellent as is P.S. Hoffman and Jude Law. Rated R for lots of F word usage.
Bogart as Sam Spade in this classic film noir. Add to that Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet and you have a classic mystery that is one of the best of the genre.
Spielberg knows how to make you jump! There were a lot of sudden jumping bits in this movie. Lots of screams in the theater when we were there. I thought the shark looked pretty fake, but I guess that was the best they could do in 1975. John Williams score was perfect. Those bass notes being repeated will always be associated with sharks now.
I really enjoyed this movie.... I thought it was one of the best animated features I had seen in awhile. I know this isn't a film for everyone, because it is about food, cooking and rats... and those subjects don't go together that well. But I found myself very much involved in it and found it very entertaining.
I heard that Preston Sturges made some great comedies and that this was one of the best, so I checked it out and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Lots of laugh out loud moments. I really liked William Demarest.
True story? This guy's life is so crazy...but fun to watch the whole thing play out as you can't really believe what he got away with. DiCaprio and Hanks are both very good. Not a typical Spielberg film.
This has to be one of the strangest musicals. Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene are sweet and funny in this wacky comedy/horror? musical. The venus flytrap begins to grow and grow and it talks and sings, too. The plant needs blood to stay alive and discovers that it likes humans. Steve Martin plays the crazy dentist (the part was played by Jack Nicholson in the original)
Very funny movie. Andy Griffith is terrific. I still laugh just thinking about the toilets that were so clean and when the big brass walked in, the lids saluted!
Warren Beatty hasn't made that many movies and that is too bad because he is a good actor and a good director. This was a remake but a very good one. I think I like it better than the original. It was fun.
A cute comedy with Doris Day and David Niven and lots of kids, and a big shaggy dog. Doris sings Que Sera Sera. (How many movies did she sing that in?)
A very suspenseful Hitchcock that begins to give you the creeps as it unwinds. Cotton plays a very likable guy, which makes you not believe the truth about him. Teresa is terrific. Her favorite uncle whom she's named after has come to visit and she is so happy until she figures out that he is a murderer. Soon he knows that she knows...
Meryl Streep is great as the bitchy head of a fashion magazine, and Anne Hathaway is good as the naive young employee that tries to get on her good side. A lot of funny stuff.
The only Hitchcock film to win the Oscar for best picture. Laurence Olivier is always outstanding, and this one is one of the best I've seen of his work. Good suspense. I also thought the remake on PBS a few years ago was very good.
The original and very good, especially Audrey Hepburn. After watching the remake first, it was hard to like Humphrey Bogart as well as Harrison Ford...but he is a good actor and plays it well.
The amazing Dustin Hoffman in another amazing performance. He and Cruise are good together and this ends up being quite a touching story. Rated R... so I am thinking that I saw the edited version on TV. Not sure what was cut out... probably language....maybe sex and/or nudity.
If you like Garrison Keillor and his radio broadcast, then you will probably love this. I can see where some might not. It's not a film for everyone. I enjoyed the songs and especially enjoyed Meryl Streep and Lilly Tomlin. Lindsay Lohan is a bit of a surprise and Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are very funny with all the dirty jokes. I didn't get the whole 'angel in a white trenchcoat' thing.
A great pairing of Tracy and Hepburn in what just might be the best or close to the best one that they did together. These two were good on screen together, that's why they made so many of them.
From the church that made "Flywheel" and "Facing the Giants" comes this third and much improved film. These amateur movie makers can claim professionalism with this third one. Starring Kirk Cameron this time and a solid cast of unknown actors, they pulled it off. Kirk had so much emotion in his performance. Very touching as a man who did not want to see his marriage fall apart. The scenes with the smaller parts that didn't involve Kirk were noticeably weaker, but not horrible. Good special effects and dramatic intensity during the fire fighting scenes and rescues. This added some excitement to a story that was mostly about a failed relationship and how this man began to try to put it back together even before feeling the desire to do so. Have your kleenex ready as the emotions are heavy and it just might get to you. It did me. As I sat there watching this with my wife, I could not help but think about our marriage.
Fun old musical with some cute songs...the title song will keep you humming. It's got Julie Andrews and a young James Fox and Mary Tyler Moore. Carol Channing is her regular crazy self. Okay...so the story is rather dumb and it ain't one of the best ones out there... but I still had a good time.
This film has been done so many times, and usually under the title "The Front Page". Some really like the Walter Matthou/ Jack Lemmon version. I kind of think that this one is the best. Rapid fire dialog between Grant and Russell is terrific.
I saw this again recently and I didn't enjoy it as much as the first time, but it is a classic western and one of my faves in that genre. I loved the scene where they have to jump off the cliff. "I can't swim!" "The fall will probably kill ya!" Oh yeah... and you get BJ Thomas singing "Raindrops keep falling on my head." Not sure why they picked that one. Great song, though.
Robert Redford, old planes and lots of great flying stunts, George Roy Hill directing ...great period look and feel with costumes and cars, planes, etc. What's not to like?
Another guilty pleasure? Well, there are definitely things about this movie that I don't like and can't recommend for moral reasons, but in high school, I performed "Money, Money" with a friend for a competition and so I loved that song and I bought the album and fell in love with many of the other songs. Years later, I saw this on TV and was made aware of the sexuality in it. Not sure who Joel Grey was supposed to be, but he was very good at it and worthy of his Oscar.
A few years back, I discovered what a gem of an actress Loretta Young was. This is one of her best films. A fascinating story and Joseph Cotten is good as the love interest.
I liked this movie. It was a very strange story, to say the least...about a man aging backwards, but I found it entertaining and fun to watch. Mostly, the best part of the film is watching Brad Pitt look so old and so small and get taller and younger as the movie went along. When you stop and think about it....the story is preposterous, because it just wouldn't happen. I found the beginning very intriguing as he is growing up as a little boy who seems to be an old man. There is a repeated joke in the film that I have to admit, it made me laugh every single time. I guess it's not a great film. There isn't even that much in the love story to make you want them to stay together...I just liked to see how they did the make-up so well that he looked so old and was getting younger. Then you find yourself asking how they did it? How did they make him look so small and old and then how did he look like he was 18? Maybe some award nominations are in store for make-up and special effects, and possibly for Pitt's performance as Button. Warning... It's long: 2 hours and 45 mins. It also has some brief nudity, a few bad words and several instances of people having sex who aren't married. I enjoyed that it was taking place in New Orleans, with even shades of Katrina, but not that much to move me or make me feel anything. I saw no message (unless it was that life is short and we must make the best of it and go for the things we want.) or moral.... yet I still liked it.
A fun Tom Hanks film when a young boy suddenly gets his wish and he's 30. But he's still a boy inside and never had the chance to grow up. Cute and silly and fun...not great, but it never tries to be.
I thought this was a good movie and well worth seeing, but I also thought that it did not capture the magic of the first one. They really pumped up the special effects and some of it was quite amazing. I think Aslan even looked better than in the original. There is so much time spent in fighting battles, that we don't get a chance to really get a feel for the characters in this story. I miss some of the interaction between the siblings and I would have liked to get to know more about some of the new characters, like Reepicheep and Trumpkin. Ben Barnes is okay as Caspian, but didn't knock my socks off. I know that it is hard to create real personality in a CGI character, but I thought they did it well with the Beavers in the first one. This time, not so much. I hope that improves as Reepicheep will be back in a big way. I went in knowing that critics were not saying good things about this one and that they made a lot of changes from the book, to try to make a better story. It has been so many years since I read the book, that I didn't remember it anyway. I hear that they are at work on Voyage of the Dawn Treader and it has a new director. Let's hope that means a much better film is coming.
I enjoyed getting to learn the story of Peter Parker and seeing how he became Spider-Man. Fun romance developments between Tobey Maquire and Kirsten Dunst.
Its a fun and famous story...about Aladdin and his magic lamp...but the main reason to watch this is to hear Robin Williams do the voice (voices) of the genie.
I found this to be a charming movie. Ryan is good and this was my first time to see Hugh Jackman and was impressed with him. I wanted to see it again and thought it was a fun film.
Tom and Meg don't even meet till the end of the film, but it is fun to see how they get there. Kind of a sappy romantic story, but still a favorite of many. Somehow it has become a classic. There is something special about the whole Empire State Bldg thing.
Very emotional film. Just try not to be effected during a scene between Timothy Hutton and Judd Hirsch when he really starts to have a break-through. Mary Tyler Moore is excellent as an icy mother. Hutton won an Oscar and there many other nominations, including Moore and Hirsch. That powerful scene also has some bad language that gives the film the R rating.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Gibson and Roberts in this film where Mel plays someone just a bit nuts. Rated R... but don't know why...I saw an edited TV version.
I got caught up in this story and found it touching when you think what some of the youth might have thought about joining Hitler's ranks. These kids just wanted to dance swing...and because it was American music...it was forbidden. Great music and dancing are mixed into the story.
Classic musical that made Olivia and John even bigger stars than they already were. I loved her sweet version of "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Summer Nights" and "Look at me I'm Sandra Dee". I didn't like how she became a bad girl for him instead of him becoming the good guy for her. And the one girl getting pregnant... making this less a family film.
Ryan and Tatum (father and daughter) playing father and daughter... it was a great team. Why didn't they ever team up again? Okay... I guess he was a terrible dad in real life. Well, not so great in the movie either...teaching his kid to be a con artist. But they pulled some pretty funny bits. Tatum was amazing in this. Almost sad to watch a little girl act that way. Bogdanovich was good at these kinds of films. Kahn is good, too.
This is such a classic, that you see scenes of it in other movies. "meet me at the top of the Empire State Bldg" and she doesn't show. It builds to a very dramatic and tear jerking ending that makes all the ladies cry. So romantic. This was a remake of Love Affair and it was remade again with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. I don't know...I think I like this one the best.
This is a little gem of a movie! I really found myself totally involved in the story and the characters. Joan Plowright is simply wonderful as Mrs. Palfrey. She strikes up a friendship with a young man played by new actor, Rupert Friend. Their relationship is quite wonderful and it is what makes this story so captivating. They adopt each other as grandmother and grandson, and in many ways, it is stronger than most of the real ones. There is one brief scene where there is partial nudity, but other than that, it is really a very safe, PG film. This is one for a night when you just want to curl up on the couch for a good story.
As a kid, I loved this movie...and saw it whenever it came on TV. I always liked Dick Van Dyke and the flying car and fun songs make this a pleaser. Now... having said that, I have not seen it for many years, probably not since I was an adult.
I thought this was a nice little film. After the Passion of the Christ, I became an even bigger fan of Caviezel. I also like Jeremy Northam. It is a true story and I learned about this golf legend and how he overcame his anger to be a man of integrity. Also, it was cool to see my cousin's name as one of the producers.
Billy Wilder didn't just do great little comedies. I've heard some say this is his best. Holden is really good and it is a great story. I think Wilder wrote the script too. I didn't really see this as a comedy, but I guess it is funny at times. I just thought it was good.
Ya just gotta love Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Its a lot of fun and laughs and adventure as the love story between Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley develops. Geoffrey Rush makes a great pirate.
A fun little sci-fi flick with Jeff Bridges in a great role as an alien. He takes on the body of Karen Allen's dead husband and she helps him get back to his ship....but not before falling in love with him, of course. There is some funny stuff as he tries to understand life on Earth.
Richard Gere is trying to find out why this bride keeps bailing out on her wedding day. She runs every time and the grooms keep changing. Well, you know Gere falls for her, its a romantic comedy and they are the leads. I enjoyed it.
I've seen this a couple of times and I really liked it. Irene Dunne is really good as the Norwegian immigrant. Look for a funny, young Ellen Corby (Grandma Walton) here.
A good friend recommended this movie and said it was one of his favorites. I can see why... as it really is a touching story of the faith of a family and the difficult question of fighting in a war. The Quakers were against violence and war, but this had to taken seriously, when the fighting began to happen right in their area.
This was a fun and original movie and possibly Will Farrell's best acting. I don't usually go for his movies, but this one was different. I was intrigued by the story. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson are good.
What a crazy film! But I was laughing a lot. Now there was a violent beginning and a thriller type ending, but in the middle is a lot of fun and Renee is wonderful as she chases after Greg Kinnear.
Another good Tom Hanks movie, but Michael Clarke Duncan stands out in this somewhat long story about a prison guard. You get a good feel of death row, and the movie tells an interesting story. I don't think I saw the R version.
Saw this as a kid and again not too long ago. Great suspense for the story of the "boy who cried wolf". No one would listen to this woman when it really mattered. Really keeps you on the edge right up to the end.
A big Robert Altman cast doing the Upstairs Downstairs type of setting with an Agatha Christie type of story. A good 'who-done-it' but with some stuff thrown in that you might want to fast forward over that gives it an R rating. I liked Jeremy Northam and Helen Mirren and Clive Owen.
Trying to catch the feel of the old Doris Day/Rock Hudson films...and I think it does. These two are great together and it was a fun film. I loved their little duet at the end during the credits (or maybe it was on the DVD extras.)
Great date movie. Took Sharyn to see it for Valentine's and it was fun and cute. Renee Zellweger is almost always good and she plays the part right here (as the fish out of water) ... Harry Connick Jr makes a good leading man for her. But the character that I think I enjoyed the most was Blanche (Siobhan Fallon). She had the cute Scandinavian accent going and she talked about Jesus, so her character seemed to be a Christian, but not played like they usually are, as a joke. She was sincere and sweet and was a very likable character. When she asked Renee if she had found Jesus, I heard someone behind me go "uh oh". The look on Renee's face also said that as she seemed worried.. but the joke wasn't the lady herself... it was Renee saying that she didn't know Jesus was lost. It played out nicely and so did this woman's character in the film. Frances Conroy is always good and J,K. Simmons (from The Closer) was a fun and fat northerner. Now I'm not saying this is a movie that will become a classic or anything, but I think you'll have a good time watching it and it wasn't totally predictable and your typical romantic comedy. They kept it interesting. I thought Renee was good and funny with the pratfalls and playing a drunk. PG for some potty humor and body part humor....though not distasteful. I realize that probably a very small portion of the population of MN talk with that accent, don'tcha know. But I have heard it while passing through that area. This reminded me of some of the characters in Fargo. Maybe they were Canadian... it seemed to have been filmed in Canada.
This is a fun movie. Okay, so it's not Mary Poppins, but fun just the same. Emma Thompson is wonderful and Colin Firth is usually very good, too. Also Angela Lansbury is on hand. I found it very entertaining.
I loved learning about Glenn Miller's life and having Stewart play him was great since I always like him. I think he did a good job. Plus you get his great music also.
This is a good movie. I enjoyed it. Perhaps it was a little bit predictable as a typical romantic comedy... but I still liked how it played out. It was nice to see Steve Carell play someone nice and not just a total jerk, that he does so well. He's a single father who is trying to be a good dad to 3 girls but having some problems and then he meets Juliette Binoche and that really creates some difficult and sometimes humorous situations. But this is not a laugh out loud hilarious comedy, but rather a nice realistic film about a man who falls in love and can't do anything about it. A few bad words and adult situations give it the PG-13 rating. I liked how his family did a lot of fun things together as a family and made being together a special time. I wanted to be part of their little family talent show, and play their competitive games.
A classic play that I did a scene from for my acting class. I always liked watching this one. The acting is marvelous. Besides Hepburn, I also really liked Sam Waterston.
This was a surprisingly good little movie about a Long Beach, CA teacher and what she accomplished with her students who everyone had given up on. I was moved by this story.
Probably my favorite Charlie Chaplin film. I also liked the Little Tramp, but this one tugs at your heart as you see him fall in love with the blind girl who thinks he is a rich man, not a bum.
The main reason to see this film is for the lead actor, Armie Hammer. What a find! A good looking and charismatic actor who really made me feel that I was looking at the young Billy Graham. Stefanie Butler as Ruth was also very good, and I didn't even recognize Lindsay Wagner as Billy's mother, another good performance. The fault with this film I'm afraid lies with the director, Robby Benson. I always liked him as a young actor, but this seems to be his first venture into directing films and I wasn't sure that some of his choices here were the best ones for this movie. (he's been directing TV shows since the early 90's) It had the feel of a low budget Christian Film, though I don't think it was a Christian film at all. The story focuses on how Billy came to Christ and then felt the call into the ministry and how he met and fell in love with Ruth. The side story was about his best friend, Charles Templeton, who was also an evangelist, but later denounced his faith and walked away from it forever...as played by Martin Landau in his aging years. I thought these scenes with Landau weakened the film, although he is a great actor and was really acting up a storm as the crazy old man. (He actually died of Alzheimer's, so that could be why he played him like that) He plays the narrator telling about Billy in an interview, though this was an interesting side story that I never knew about, I found it dragging the main story. I just wanted to watch Hammer play Billy and learn how this all happened for him. This wasn't as good as I had wanted it to be, and I think it may end up being nothing more than a kicking off point for Hammer's career. It was also fun learning some stuff about Billy Graham that I didn't know.
I have been wanting to see this film ever since I first heard about it. I first heard great things, then I heard not so great from some critics. I can see why. Some of you will not like this movie. Without giving it away, most of you will not like the ending. A twist, maybe, shocking, yes... but did they really have to go there? Perhaps they did. It does make you think, as most holocaust films do. Seeing things through the eyes of these two boys was the best part of the film. The actress playing the mother was good as she began to realize just what her husband did as a nazi and what was really happening in the camp. I think it will surely affect you and make you think. My wife said she could not get it out of her mind a few hours later. I thought it was a good way to show how there really was no difference in these two boys who became friends and yet, in that time and in that place in the world, people believed that the Jews were evil and not even real people. It was based on a book which I have not read, so I don't know how well it follows the book.
A delightful little comedy about a romance between an unlikely couple. Cluny is a plumber's niece who becomes a maid in pre WW2 England. (Jennifer Jones) Boyer is a foreign writer who appears to be hiding from Hitler, and he strikes up a friendship with Jones. Most of the humor is about the stuffy manors of the upper class British and how it relates to the working class and what it means to know your place.
I have not read the book, but this was a good movie. It was made very well and well acted, and it kept me very interested with a good amount of suspense and drama. Susan Sarandon was at the top of her game and got an oscar nom for this. Brad Renfro is very good for being in his first movie. Too bad that when he grew up he had a lot of problems and accidentally overdosed on drugs at age 25, dying just a month before Heath Ledger. This movie has a huge cast of well-known actors and all very talented.
I enjoyed this movie. It had a lot of touching moments and things to make you think about your life and how you are spending it. These two strangers really developed quite a good friendship in the last days of their lives and it was fun to watch that come about. Jack plays a very wealthy man who doesn't have a friend in the world and only focused on work all of his life. Morgan plays a family man who never accomplished what he had dreamed but had a happy and loving family. So, Jack suggests that they do the bucket list that Morgan was writing as an exercise. Okay, most of us would not be able to do this. Jack's character was so rich that he could pay for all of it. But it was cool to see how it changed both of them. Jack uses a lot of colorful language, but it fit his character.
It's not Lord of the Rings or Narnia, but I enjoyed this movie and found it to be an entertaining story. An interesting premise, as the Brendan Fraser character is what they call a silvertongue, which means when he reads from a book, the book comes to life and the characters come out of the book into our world. While reading the book "Inkheart", it happened, and when the characters came out of the book, his wife went in. So, he spends years looking for the book again, in hopes of somehow getting his wife back. Now his little girl is a teenager and she figures out what's going on when he finds the book again and one of the characters shows up: Paul Bettany. Andy Serkis (Gollum from Lord of the Rings) plays the villain and does a great job of it. It's fun to see characters and animals from various children's stories show up in the story as they try to get it worked out. Helen Mirren joins the group as Fraser's fiesty aunt. It's a nice film and I thought they did a pretty good job. When the shadow appears toward the end... that could be too scary for small children.
Saw this again recently and it is a favorite. Yeah.. I guess I like the fantasy/fairy tale type stories. In this one... Matthew Broderick plays a young thief in the old world who escapes the dungeon and comes into contact with a renegade knight who travels with a hawk. It doesn't take long to figure out that as soon as the sun sets, the man turns into a wolf and the hawk into a beautiful woman. Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer play the lovers who are forever separated by an evil curse, put upon them by none other than the wicked Bishop. He tries to hunt them down, and they get help from an old priest. Broderick talks to God all the time and learns a bit about faith and the old priest learns forgiveness. (for himself).
