If I have any serious complaints about Snyder's 'Watchmen' they're that the film is just too damn short, and some of the minor attempts to add a level of modernist realism made the story feel "lighter" and less "real" than the one in the comic. Despite being changed into a worldwide threatârather than the localized one seen in the comicâthe climax is lacking the gravity and sense of loss present in Alan Moore's original story. It's also missing a lot of the humanity that made the book resonate so much, and the simplification or total excising of portions of dialogue leaves much to be desired. However, the movie is surprisingly faithful to the book in many respects, and it LOOKS amazing. That this movie got made, that it's GOOD, that it's as smart as it isâit's as close as mainstream film-making is likely to get to 'Donnie Darko' or 'Waking Life' territory, but on an epic, almost old-Hollywood sort of scaleâand that it was a relatively HARD R-rated film is HUGE. Future comic-book adapters, take note! |
