A Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven) (1946,  PG)
A Matter of Life and Death (Stairway to Heaven)
A life affirming film, that is not what is seems at first. Must be seen on the big screen to marvel at the largeness of the scale and themes, and all done a tiny budget compared to Hollywood films fims of the same time. Powell and Pressbergers best!
2
Jeremiah Johnson (1972,  PG)
Jeremiah Johnson
Nothing much happens, but from the beginning when I saw this in the seventies, I was drawn into the beautiful and perfectly paced film. The making of is fun too. Watching Sydney Pollack throw himself around showing Robert Redford how to do a stunt, shows how committed they were. Way ahead of its time, yet timeless. Thank you for making this guys.
3
Open Range (2003,  R)
Open Range
The western is alive and well in the hands of Costner, with the trio made complete by Duvals gruff and nuanced take on an old cattle driver and Bennings beautifully grace-full performance as a small town spinster. I can enjoy this again and again.
4
The Great Escape (1963,  Unrated)
The Great Escape
Yasva loubloo! You'll know if you've seen this as many times as I have and still love it with a passion! Still packs a punch after 40 odd years. God bless you John Sturgess, McQueen, Garner, Coburn, Bronson et al. Big X - triple excellent!!
5
Casablanca (1943,  Unrated)
6
The Razor's Edge (1946,  Unrated)
The Razor's Edge
What an unexpected gem. Just found this, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Never thought I'd say that about Tyrone Power, but since then have searched, and found, several great films of his. This, if you forgive Gene Tierney's way over the top turn as the love interest, has so much to say that fits right in with todays peoples search for meaning. Power's wartime experience marked his choosing this very underated beauty of a film.
7
Le Samouraļ (The Godson) (1967,  PG)
Le Samouraļ (The Godson)
Hypnotic. A masterpiece, from beginning to end. Bravo Melville et Delon!!!
8
The Untouchables (1987,  R)
The Untouchables
From the music by Ennio M, De Palma's majestic direction and the photography, let alone the superb fun the actors are having [ Connery's laughable Scottish/Irish accent, but he got an Oscar for it so who cares, he doesn't] to the rousing finale, a truly great movie!
9
Tombstone (1993,  R)
Tombstone
For me this is one of the all time best Westerns, highly underated. Went to see it twice when it came out in '93. Russell is having a ball with his handle-bar moustache and Kilmer is sublime as Doc. The whole production is operatic, but with a truth running all the way through it. They don't take the piss, they believe in these people. The OK Corall was never better shot, 'scuse the pun.
10
North by Northwest (1959,  Unrated)
North by Northwest
Grant was never cooler, Hitchcock was not as assured with the look and score so perfectly matched. Perfect.
11
JFK (1991,  R)
JFK
Some facts may be suspect, but the editing[deservedly winning an oscar] and the performances are top knotch!! Gary Oldmans Lee Harvey Oswald was criminally overlooked, and wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. It should have been his and his alone for this. Costner CAN act, and more than amply holds his own amongst big guns casting. The opening 7 mins is a masterclass in film montage, and Donald Suthertland shot of adrenalin 1hr 40mins into the film is magnificent.
12
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969,  PG)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Not the first buddy movie, Tracy and Gable did them in the 30's, but this is one of the best, and might be my favorite film. Roy Hill is a much missed force in films and highly underarted. But watch this and be swept away by the joy and love that comes through the screen. Made Redford a star and Newman peeked in a beautifully nuanced turn as the ever likable Butch - wheich is harder to do than meets the eye. Fantastic!
13
It's a Wonderful Life (1946,  Unrated)
14
The Searchers (1956,  Unrated)
The Searchers
This film I can watch again and again, and still find soenthing new, or watch and savour as classic line is delivered perfectly. My favorite Western of all. Majestic!!
15
Lawrence of Arabia (1962,  PG)
Lawrence of Arabia
No prisoners!! This takes none and I love the balls it took to make the original running length 3hrs 40mins. Ok so they cut it within weeks -15mins, then another 20 mins - but the scale, passion and ambition (all out nuts) of making this tour de force, 2 years in the making, and such brilliance in the execution of everything. Acting, production, editing, everything points to possibly THE greatest British film ever made.
16
The Fisher King (1991,  R)
17
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938,  PG)
The Adventures of Robin Hood
A classic. From Max Steiner's score, Flynn's joyous exuberance as Robin to Curtiz brilliance at staging...the whole package!! Excellent!!
18
Marathon Man (1976,  R)
19
La Vie en Rose (La Mome) (2007,  PG-13)
20
All the President's Men (1976,  R)
All the President's Men
How to make a film that is gripping and you want to know what happens next, when you already know what happened? Classic is a term banied about these days but this qualifies with room to spare. Pakula was on top form as was Goldman, teamed up again with Redford. Great cast, great writing, great editing, and of course great directing. You didn't deserve to go the way you did Alan J Pakula, but this - together with 'Mockingbird' is a fantastic legacy. The sparse music is the final beautiful touch.
21
Dances With Wolves (1990,  PG-13)
22
Vertigo (1958,  PG)
Vertigo
A meditation on obsession and forcing others do what we want them to do in order for our insides to be at peace. All was coming together at this period for Hitchcock, but without his writers and his team of talented production people, this would have been less than the classic it has become.
23
It Happened One Night (1934,  Unrated)
It Happened One Night
Way ahead of its time, and still able to cast a spell of joy and happiness seventy years after it was made. MGM sent Gable to Columbia Pictures as punishment, and he got an Oscar into the bargain. LB mayer was the one who ended up eating humble pie, but not for long. This is Capra at his best, And all of it done in 4 weeks!!
24
Rebel Without a Cause (1955,  PG-13)
25
Jaws (1975,  PG)
Jaws
The big one!! What a summer it was when this was released. Superb, and gone into modern folklore already! Excellent.
26
The Verdict (1982,  R)
The Verdict
Newman at his very best!! He got the Oscar for this - 5 years late - but Colour of Money was just a way of apologising for not giving it to him because Gandhi was released the same year as this brilliant film, masterfully directed by Sidney Lumet. Very influential, and not given enough credit. Excellence! Doff the hat to a master at work.
27
Unforgiven (1992,  R)
28
The Sting (1973,  PG)
29
Bullitt (1968,  PG)
Bullitt
A film I've watched again and again and still get something new from it with each viewing. Excellent.
30
Field of Dreams (1989,  PG)
Field of Dreams
If you don't cry when Ray asks his father if he wants play catch - you have no soul.
A beautiful film that isn't embarassed about being open to believing in something greater.
31
Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
The film that changed my life. From then on I knew what I wanted to do. Still do. Massive!

Angel Heart
A peak in Rourkes' career.
33

47
The Dresser (1983,  PG)
48
The Parallax View (1974,  R)
The Parallax View
A complex and uneasy watch but all the more worth it. Beatty captures the times perfectly, as he did throughout the Seventies better than anyone of his contemporaries. Lives up to its title and a great ending.
49
A League of Their Own (1992,  PG)
50
The Dead Zone (1983,  R)
The Dead Zone
I love this film, and one of the most successful adaptions of Kings novels. Walken is suitably intense, but there's humour and lightness there, before he became "hire the scary creep we all love". Walken manages to make Johnny a real charcater with new super human powers - the cast of Heroes take note - watch and learn!!
51
Edward Scissorhands (1990,  PG-13)
52
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975,  R)
53
Shane (1953,  Unrated)

An underrated actor, with a great voice, was Alan Ladd, giving here one of his best performances. George Stevens assured direction, and Jack Palance in a theatrical turn as the whispering baddie. Classic!

Granstanding performances from two giants, with Tracy as usual coming out on top, and the only one who doesn't date in this worthy movie.

We're No Angels (1955,  Unrated)
We're No Angels
This is highly underated, and rarely seen, but very apt now, as it's a Christmas film, and pretty good one at that. Not a close up in sight and betrayed by it's stage origins, but it stands up becuase of the crsytal clear picture, and brilliantly sparky performances from Bogie, and especially Ustinov. A rare little gem!!!

Stanley Baker was highly underated. If you want to see him in one of his best roles, this is a brilliant piece of Fifties British filmaking doing it's best to break out of usual stayed safety zone. Baker and Endfield wanted to kick British films up the arse and wake people up, and in the this action thriller they succeed. Sir Satnley Baker, diolch yn fawr ( thank you).
