Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001,  R)
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
My wife took me to see this when we were dating. Thought I was going to really hate it, but ended up loving it. Wonderfully twisted humor, great pacing, and a truly engaging story.
2
Batman Begins (2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Decent restart to the franchise after Schumacher destroyed it. Good acting, good villain, and a good version of the Batman's origin. Can't say I liked Katie's acting much. But the addition of Caine as Alfred really raised the bar.
3
Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
This movie's examination of a madman spreading his off-kilter view of the world was a wonderful agitation from your usual media experience.
4
Knocked Up (2007,  R)
Knocked Up
Saw this as a preview and was rolling. Apatow's ability to make the mundane hilarious and still have us somehow identify with an over-the-top character is masterful.
5
The Fifth Element (1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
Yes, it's formulaic and cheesy. But it's done with such a straight face and with such visionary attention to detail that this movie still engages me.
6
The Incredibles (2004,  PG)
The Incredibles
I was sure this movie was going to truly suck. But Brad Bird's ability to make the supers just human is what made it a great movie. The scene where they're arguing about directions and street exits was perfect.
7
The Matrix (1999,  R)
The Matrix
Great, riveting, inventive movie that changed the genre. The follow ups of course couldn't have the same impact, so the first will remain the best. All that, despite the fact that humans just don't seem like an efficient power source from any perspective.
8
The Nightmare Before Christmas (2008,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
I didn't see the 3-d, but I do love this movie. I love Halloween and have thought Christmas has a bit overdone for a while. When this came out, it was a perfect antidote.
9
X-Men (2000,  PG-13)
X-Men
It has it's clumsy moments, for sure. But Ian and Patrick portrayed their respective icons admirably. And Jackman channeled Wolverine as well as anyone could.
10
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
11
War Eagle, Arkansas (2009,  PG-13)
12
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
