My Favorite Movies

Great sci-fi entry from the folks who brought you the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Some logic loopholes here and there but the nearly 2 hr long film is entirely watchable. Very credible special effects!

A serious flim that holds interest from beginning to end. It concerns a military expedition's mission to investigate the disappearence of a science team in a far distant planet. Along the way they discover that a super civilization which existed a million years ago destroyed itself by a mysterious, overwhelming force.

Believe it or not, this flick is based on a Shakespeare play "The Tempest" and you'll see how. it's a science fiction film that makes you want to think (and thinking is rare nowadays!). The special/audio effects and color visuals were state-of-the-art then and still looks good today. When compared to the plethora of mindless 1980s space movies, this one still shines like an erupting supernova to this day.

It's one of those movies that can be seen repeatedly over time and not get tired of it. The fact that the movie is still shown on TV after more than 50 years is a solid testament to the wise folks behind its creative production.

A decorated WWI veteran falls victim to miserable economic circumstances during the Great Depression and inadvertently resorts to crime to survive. He's arrested and forced to labor in a Georgia chain gang. He escapes to a different state and eventually reforms himself as a prosperous model citizen. But he's always cognizant of the fact that he's still wanted by Georgia.

This 1930s movie moves fairly quickly and competently and was based on a best-selling non-fiction novel authored by that same person. Btw, the box office hit film was banned in the state where he had served time. Actor Paul Muni gives a solid performance throughout and never bores you. I saw it a couple of years ago and wouldn't mind viewing it again.

Young, fresh-out-of-school WWI German soldiers experience the stark realities and horrors of trench warfare -- and doing it all for vague reasons.

This 1930s black and white film was the Star Wars of its day. A big box office hit. I also read the book on which the flick was based. The author gave his blessing after the movie premiered.

There are a few good movies concerning the WWI debacle but this one is the godfather of them all!

A guy with a grudge utilizes black magic to horribly destroy his victims. "Curse of the Demon" is one of the more intelligent horror movies produced during the 1950s. Very convincing special effects concoction in the film morphs the subject creature into terrifying reality. see it at night with the lights out ... if u dare!

An HG Welles novel adapted for the screen. The estate of HG Welles loved this flick. they felt it was well done and I concur. But they hated the previous hollywood adaption of "War of the Worlds" because of religious overtones inserted in the movie, and HG Welles was an atheist. Ergo, no religion is this movie. and it doesn't take too kindly to meat eaters! The Time Machine is a great classic sci-fi adventure from start to finish. There's action, drama, scifi, and romance. Gals, as well as guys, will find the movie worthwhile and entertaining.

A plane crash lands in the hot, forbidding desert and the survivors ponders their fate. Great desert movie featuring a veteran cast. An updated remake of this movie was made a few years ago which wasn't bad but the original here still holds up very well. A talky kinda drama but never boring. No female cast except for a belly dancer mirage. For best viewing experience, watch it during the dead of winter!

One can view this flick much like a cowboy and indians western, except that the indians are in charge of the fort and the cowboys are the renegades. Burton and Eastwood are the cold killer cowboys and have lots of fun shooting off their automatic weapons and laying waste to as many Nazis as their endless stream of ammo would permit. Richard Burton is a fast talker so you need to pay real good attention to him as he reveals much of the raison d'etre of the film. Clint Eastwood doesn't say very much. He lets his expertly held knife, explosives and MP44 do most of the talking. Lots of lively action. Perhaps an inspiration for a pc game "Wolfenstein", predecessor to "Doom".

A very good, underrated film noir movie filled with twists and turns. lead Charles McGraw puts in a dynamic act as the tough cop assigned to protect a female state witness from determined killer mobsters. No monsters or glitzy fx, just good gritty drama.

Angry dad Lance Henriksen seeks out an old recluse' help in getting revenge against a bunch of teens for the accidental death of his son. Great fx creature, high body count, and ambiently eerie music score enhances the movie's creep factor. Definitely worth the view.

Before "Jaws" there was "Duel". A monster truck subs for the monster shark. The highway subs for the ocean. If u liked "jaws" you'll love this flick. Don't forget the popcorn!!

A good suspenseful drama concerning a small expedition's attempt to find the fabled creature. A good movie to pass the time with.
