| Sukiyaki Western Django - R |
This is one of those films you can either love or hate. Sukiyaki Western Django is the type of movie that will make any western fan smile while watching because of the ridiculous amount of references and homages it contains to "spaghetti westerns" Takashi Miike blends in elements of Japanese, American and Italian culture to make this very odd, yet funny Western that is basically a mix of For a Few Dollars More (which was copied from Yojimbo) and Django. |

| Dogville - R |
I generally avoid movies such as this because they are usually pretentious art films that try to be different just for the sake of being different. But Dogville was a very different experience that used it's unique style to it's advantage. The director is the creator of the famous Dogma93 movement and he applied elements of that style to film along with some other peculiar elements such as have bare minimum props. Instead of having actual items, he had chack outlines of the items with the names written inside of them. So for example, instead of having a tree or a wall, there is just the outlines of these set parts and the actors act as if the item exists. Because of this the film feels like a play in many ways because it relies mostly on the story and the actors skills to entertain. With the movie stripped of all the extra elements I was very drawn into this deeply disturbing story about a small town that starts of show it's dark side when they find out that they have power over an another person. The whole movie was such a refreshing and satisfying experience that breaks the usual Hollywood norms without sacrificing any storytelling elements. |

| The Dark Knight - PG-13 | Fantastic film for the performances and the action set-pieces. Heath Ledger was awesome as expected, but I felt the whole cast did a tremendous job with the movie. Aaron Eckhart and Gary Oldman were great for their roles and I felt they really held the movie together in scenes Ledger was not in. Majority of the movie was perfectly paced and the story was intriguing enough to keep you intrested for the whole run-time. But the climax of the movie was extremely lacking. Everything from the anti-climatic fight with the joker to the sappy boat bombs plotline kind of dragged down the film a notch. It's disappointing in that respect because it fell in the same pitfalls as other comic book movies and had same mistakes as Batman Begins final scenes, but all that was easy to forgive considering the previous 2 hours of masterful filmmaking . Easily the best comic book movie ever made and a fairly decent crime drama. It comes off as a mix between The Heat, The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween. | July 29, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Ultimo Tango a Parigi (Last Tango in Paris) - NC-17 |
This movie is a big MEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHH for me. Maybe the historic significance or the cultural relevance is lost on me, but to me it just seems like a pretentious overrated trash that started the downward spiral of Bertolucci's career. I get the whole naturalistic human emotion character study bullshit, the controversy of the butter in the ass OH NOES sex scenes and the Brando's "HAY I AM DEPRESSED" performance, but they all just don't work together to make a convincing film for me. The acting is great and the music is noteworthy but everything else is mediocre at best. Bertolucci basically took many themes and plot lines he explored in his previous brilliant films and rehashed the whole idea of exploring the despair and circular nature of abuse of a specific person's life. While the movie is beautifully shot and lot of people credit the cinematography as one of the endearing aspects of the film, I personally think it's a step backwards for Bertolucci when compared to his other classics such as, The Conformist. Also a lot of times the way Bertolucci tried to get the theme of the movie across symbolically felt very pedestrian to me. For example he used the empty apartment room to signify the emptiness of the characters relationship. As if the audience did not get the point already, he does a lot of lingering wide shots of the empty apartment to show the desolated setting to signify the empty and superficial relationship the main characters are sharing. He did this so often that I just wanted to yell "WE GET IT, THE CHARACTERS ARE JUST USING EACH OTHER AND ARE LONELY EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE HUMPING EACH OTHER ALL OVER THE FLOOR." So yeah, fuck Last Tango In Paris. It's not as bad as The Dreamers (which is borderline pornographic with MTV directing) but this is a textbook example of an overrated film. |

| There Will Be Blood - R | Best movie of 2007 and quite possibility the best movie of the decade. Yes, it's that good. Lot has been said about this movie already so I won't waste my time praising the obvious merits of this film. GO WATCH IT NOW! | January 28, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Juno - PG-13 |
One of my favorite movies of the year just because of the great script by Diablo Cody and the lovable performance by Ellen Page. I love how the movie did not get too quirky or hipsterish like Garden State or Little Miss Sunshine. Instead it had a very likable tone and realistic characters who did not fit into the usual Hollywood cliches (like parents being the enemies etc). I also really enjoyed the very basic music the movie had and how low key & smooth it was. Also I absolutely loved the way Juno talks. This movie better get the Best Original Screenplay oscar. |

| The Machinist - R |
That fact that Christan Bale did not win or was at very nominated for an Oscar for this role shows how much Academy Awards FAIL. Bale gives arguably his best performance in this very creepy film about a man who is slowly losing his head and feels that everyone around him is betraying him. While the plot seems to have few plot holes, the way the whole movie is presented and developed is absolutely phenomenal. |

| Equilibrium - R |
Extremely entertaining film with some light plot elements ripped right out of 1984 and other dystopia literature/movies. But what makes this movie special is the excellent performance by Bale & Watson. Also Sean Bean was prefect in the movie even though he was in it for only 10 minutes. |

| Happy Days - Unrated | A fresh college movie unlike rest of the usual crap that pollutes Indian films. I really liked how the story had such a tight structure and arc that covered the entire college experience the 8 friends had. | January 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Shoot 'Em Up - R | Crazy action scenes and bare minimum plot. While I enjoyed some of the off the wall humor and over the top fight scenes, rest of the movie was quite dumb. But Clive and Paul do good job in their respective rolls as good guy and bad guy. | January 14, 2008 | N/A | |||

| Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - R |
Tim Burton doing a dark musical with demented characters? Johnny Depp playing a sad/twisted/egocentric/demented character? Yeah, already seen this quite a few times already in just about every movie Burton and Depp worked together on. But due to the good reviews and word of the mouth, I decided to actually watch this movie in the theater, which turned out to be a big mistake. Sure some of the songs were funny, the acting was acceptable and the first 2-3 deaths were enjoyably bloody. But the whole movie felt bland and like the usual Tim Burton shit after a while. Maybe I am just not into Tim Burton's doll house visuals and directing style, but I find that his movies in general lack any kind of connection with the audience. Also I really disliked the side-plot about the sailor kid and Emo Depp's daughter. The only character I was really interested in was the baker, and she did not seem to have enough screen time. Also I saw the "major twist" coming a mile away, because of how often they kept showing that specific character. The twist just felt like a Shakespeare rip-off, maybe the actual play is more enjoyable, because this movie was just like rest of Burton films and seems to be made for the Hot Topic goth kids. I bet Hot Topics is now filled with shit loads of Emo: The Musical AKA Sweeney Todd merchandise now. |

| Charlie Wilson's War - R |
Enjoyable, but nothing really special or outstanding. I don't see where the 75 million budget went to (assuming the big actors pockets) considering they only used 3-4 major locations for majority of the movie, the Afghanistan scenes seem to be shot on a set and they used terrible footage for any of the battle/war scenes. What I was really annoyed by the movie was how they tried so hard to make references to current Iraq-America situation by almost suggesting that 9-11 happened due to Americans arrogance and ignorance with their dealing with the Afgans after the events of the movie. The movie suggests that the lack of proper education & rebuilding efforts from America lead to Taliban controlling Afghanistan. Anyway, the movie was overall bland & almost manipulative, but the real stars of the movie were Philip Hoffman and the humorous script filled with a lot of quirky dialogues that would fit well in a Hipster comedy. Tom Hanks performance left a lot to be desired for, but I guess he was going for the subtle touches. Overall, I wish I waited for the DVD and I don't understand how it is getting nominated for all these awards. |

| Appurushîdo (Appleseed) - R |
Piece of shit animation that looks like CGI that would be best fit in a 1998 PS1 game. I really disliked the movie ascetically because of the very weird combination of blocky CG background without any textures and three dimensioned animated characters on the foreground. And to make it even worst, some of the robotic characters looked completely CG, which make it look very werid when the anime characters were interacting with them. The whole thing lacked any kind of balance or believable look. The whole story overall is another one of those cliched apocalyptic "world after a big war" stories, where yet again the main character is some wimpy looking character who is the last hope for thehumans against some secret group, and saves them using some special weapon/item. YAWN. BEEN THERE. DONE THAT. Also the soundtrack is horrendous and contains bunch of disco tracks, techo remixes and terrible indie-pop songs in English. I can't believe they are making a sequel for this and are yet again using the same crappy visuals. |

| Hustle & Flow - R | I absolutely love this movie on every level. The directing, the actors, the soundtrack, everything is absolutely perfect. While the movie follows the usual format of whole "trying to reach your dream" type movies like Rocky and so forth, the way Craig Brewer presents the story and the pimp live is something worth watching at least once. I really enjoyed the gritty approach to the story and the very in your face realism to the characters and the plot.Terrence Howard's performance as the pimp was amazing and one of the best breakthrough performances I have ever seen. | January 7, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - R | An almost perfect film with such great performances and one of the best scripts ever. The sci-fi elements don't diminish the storyline and only add more to the realistic story about two people who got tired of each other. Best Romantic Comedy ever, if you can even call it that. | January 7, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Payback - R | Such a bad ass, funny revenge film. I wish Mel Gibson still acted in fun movies like this instead of wasting his time making "Hate Jews" propaganda films. | January 7, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Spaceballs - PG | Yet an another hilarious Mel Brooks comedy. My only complaint about it is I wish they did not make the plot so similar to Star Wars. They should have tried in lot more references to other sci-fi films, because they were really the best of the movie. | January 7, 2008 | N/A | |||
| My Super Ex-Girlfriend - PG-13 | This movie failed in every sense. The only decent part of it was the movie was the parts where guy from office was was in (Eddie Izzard) | January 7, 2008 | N/A | |||
