The Dark Knight
PG-13
It's going to be so difficult to say things that haven't already been written about this movie. But here goes:
Heath Ledger steals the show in this brilliant second installment to the Batman franchise reboot. The performance given by Ledger is one for the ages and he truly defines the movie by creating one of the most menacing and haunting villains in a long, long time. I'd go as fas as saying he's the absolute best screen villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs.
His brooding persona seeps with disdain, anarchy and utter contempt for humanity and emotion--he really makes an indelible impression on your psyche.
I had a terrifying nightmare which included Ledger's Joker weeks ago--I can only imagine what kind of sickness my mind will concoct during my slumber hours now that I've seen the movie in its entirety.
Another show-stealer here (and a high recommendation for your maximum enjoyment) is the IMAX format. If you can see it in IMAX, DO IT!!!
The six sequences that were shot in TRUE IMAX format are absolutely breath-taking in their scope and magnitude. From the heart-pounding opening sequence in a bank to the blood-curdling climax on Gotham's streets, IMAX is The Dark Knight's new best friend. Forget his batmobile or his re-designed batsuit or his brand-new batbike. It's IMAX that is really Batman's newest and most-kickass gadget. The picture is beautiful, the action is insane and the bombastic surround-soundtrack will leave your guts in a posthumous state of vibration with every bullet shot and leap taken.
Speaking of posthumous (and things others have already written about) I'll have to add my vote with those who are predicting an Oscar nomination for Ledger. His work here is simply BRILLIANT (regardless of whether he's dead or not and regardless of whether this is a genre film or not.) His magnificent work deserves to be recognized.
As for the rest of the cast; it's also top-notch. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a welcome addition to the cast after a rather insipid and uninspired turn by Katie Holmes felt out of place in the last film. In this film, she brings a little more realism to the role of Rachel Dawes and rounds-out the character a little bit more instead of resorting to clichés and damsel-in-distress stereotypes.
Christian Bale is a fine example of stoicism and how to use a super-husky voice. It works okay and there's nothing really to say about Batman himself--other than he's up to his usual shenanigans in this new movie that, although named The Dark Knight, isn't really about him as much as it is about its villains.
Which leads me to Aaron Eckhart. I truly feel bad for the man who will be referred to as the "other" villain in Dark Knight. You'd think that after Ledger's sizable screen time and psychological torture on the audience there would no more room for another villain. But, as Harvey Dent, Eckhart is a great addition to the ensemble. And it will actually work to his benefit to be known as the "other" villain because it really goes with the duplicitous nature of the villain he becomes anyway. He tells the other side of the story (so to speak) and makes for an interesting relief when Ledger's mind-games become a little too cruel.
I'd also like to mention that I loved how they expanded Gary Oldman's role as Lietuenant Gordon. And his promotion to Commissioner was thought out in a very ingenious manner. Oldman really brings gravitas to a role that would be very one-dimension if played by a less-talented actor. It goes to show how perfect the casting of these films truly is.
Overall, this movie is amazing in all its aspects. Cinematography is the best I've seen in any action film since 300 and the acting is at the caliber of any arthouse drama. The action sequences are brilliantly choreographed and photographed. The soundtrack is underscored and very subtle.
I'd have to say that, along with WALL*E and The Visitor; The Dark Knight enters the trio of best films I've seen this year. Truly awe-inspiring.

1.
My Man Godfrey
Unrated
A classic screwball comedy from the 1930s, this one star William Powell and Carole Lombard. At the height of the Depression, this film became as much a social commentary picture about the division of classes in America as it did a divine comedy about the division of classes in America; and how it ultimately doesn't matter how much money you've got in your pocket in order for love to flourish.
2.
The Royal Tenenbaums
R
Wes Anderson is at his best here with a pitch-perfect ensemble cast and an awesomely funny script. The quirky Tenenbaum family is relatable to everybody and the dynamic between the cast and director is evident as the quality of the acting and art direction prove that. A must-see!
3.
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.)
Unrated
Gloria Swanson is magnificent as the silent-era film star who can't let go of her glorious past. It's a great piece of classic Hollywood drama that highlights Hollywood itself and its damaging effects on the psyche of those who are a part of it.
4.
Dick
PG-13
It's so clever and funny. A comedy with a brain. The more you know about Watergate, the more you'll enjoy this movie. Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams are perfect as the brainless teenages behind the greatest political scandal of modern times.
5.
Mrs. Miniver
Unrated
In my opinion, this movie is the best portrayal of family drama relating to World War II that came out of that era (while the war was still going on). It is a document of history as well as a great film. Greer Garson is a class-act in this one. This film definitely deserved its Best Picture Oscar.
6.
Mulholland Drive
R
David Lynch does it again with this twisted tale of Hollywood dreaming and idealism gone wrong. You have to be a Lynch fan to appreciate the movie. If you're not, you have to watch with an open mind and be ready to be made to think. A fantastic job on Naomi Watts' part, too.

Alice, Sweet Alice (Communion)
by BrianThis was actually pretty creepy and well thought out, with a twist that I didn't see coming.
It's definitely something that could be remade today if the story was tweaked a little to be updated for today.
Paula Sheppard (Alice) gives a great performance.
Not nearly as over the top and campy and most other horror from this time period.Hey, you should really see this!

To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday
by BrianDVR'd this.
The film is only 12 years old and still it's like from a different, simpler world.
Total chick that is a little uneven, but the acting maks up for it.
Plus hilarious to see Freddie Prinze, Jr in what had to have been one of his first roles,
Cute -- leaves you with a good feeling. If you like chick flicks.

Sleepwalking
by .:SexiVixxENThis flick was pretty alright.Nick Stahl plays the brother to Charlize Theron, who is in trouble ,partying it up and basically a mess, with a mess of a life and pre-teen daughter dragged all over to hell and back with her.The acting was good,I had never seen Nick Stahl in anything before so,So far so good there. My little Annasophia Robb,I tell you what this beautiful little girl has so much ahead, she is so talented and did really well in this role.Dennis Hopper,Lord knows I love him but good lord the man plays the meanest old bastard you have ever seen.Pretty good,Not phenomenal but worth watching.=)

Strangers on a Train
by Fernando RafaelNot as visually stunning or as entertaining as other Hitchcock films that I've seen, but it's definitely interesting and has some pretty thrilling sequences. Farley Granger's performance was a little bit irregular. Sometimes he was good, but most of the time he was terrible. Robert Walker was great and scary. The character of Barbara was COMPLETELY unlikeable. The climax scene with the carroussel was very impressive.

One Missed Call
by BrianTo tell the truth, this film is not majorly scary by any means, but I was still emgrossed in it --- it's fun to watch.
First of all, I love Shannyn Sossamon and will watch anything she's in, but also Sossamon and Burns had good chemistry on screen, I thought.
Yes, it's formulaic and very derivative, aside from the fact that it's a remake of J horror, but there's a popcorn flick element to it that makes it fun. It's fun and fans of Shannyn Sossamon will like this one.

The Honeymoon Killers
by BrianThis is the original film that is based on the Lonely Hearts Killers, Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck, who would exploit women through the Lonely Hearts Club in the 1940s, take their money, and kill them.
The 2006 film Lonely Hearts is an updated version with Salma Hayek and Jared Leto in the roles, which I want to see now, but I wanted to see the original first.
The Honeymoon Killers is solid, but the truth of the lifes of the real people and the circumstances of the their upbringing and crimes is much more interesting than the movie lets on. I guess it had to be watered down for a 1969/1970 audience.
The acting iswell done tho and the film interesting enough, especially for the time.Hey, you should really see this!

Anatomy (Anatomie)
by BrianThis is a strange one, because it came out in 2000, yet it has the feel of a movie from ten years earlier. Plus, I saw it with dupped English voices and would have rather have seen it in German with subtitles.
It's a decent poremise and has potential, but it's handled so lamely and ameturishly.
See it if you love the genre, or if you love Franka Potente (which I do). Otherwisae, nothing special.Nothing special. See only if you like the genre or Franka Potente.

Saw V
by DuncanJigsaw's the new Freddy Kruger, and I mean that as an insult. What was fresh and different is now becoming stale and stagnant. When will this ever END? Seriously, this franchise needs to die. Here's hoping the fifth installment is it's swansong. Something tells me that as long as the franchise makes money, it won't be.
I'll probably wind up renting it out of curiosity. No need to see this on the big screen.Yup...they're makin' a fifth one...Lionsgate is making a fucking FIFTH entry in a franchise that should never have been a franchise to begin with.
It happened to Freddy. It happened to Jason. It happened to Mike Myers. Something original comes along and becomes a hit by hook 'n crook, and BAM!, the studio starts milking it for all it's worth by crankin' out as many sequels- devoid of everything that made the original good it the first place- as they can! Three words, people: Am Not Pleezed!
Oh, by the by, how'd all you guys who gave it a rating already get to see it? According to IMDb, it doesn't come out until October...posted 3 days ago -

Blonde
by BrianThe life of Marilyn Monroe, with Poppy Montgomery as the adult Marilyn.
Learned some things I didn't know before -- need to check how accurate it is.
Not sure if it's a Lifetime Movie or not, but it's a bit like one, but better than the average one, what with the cast.
One complaint: TOO LONG!If you lie Marilyn Monroe...

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale
by BrianIt was a lot better than I expected, given the genre (not my favorite) and just reservations in general.
If you effectively leave your brain at the door it's a good enough story and the action is decent.
Another slightly different role for Jason Statham and nice to see Leelee Sobieski.
But there was some effed up casting! Lay Liotta (whenever I see him I pretty much assume the movie [or at least his part] will suck) and Burt Reynolds (who despite face lifts and botox and toupes galore is just this side of the retirement home to me). What was Boll thinking?
All in all tho, an ok film. It's ok if you leave your brain at the door.

by BrianI had shied away from this film, mostly because I thought it looked boring, and I don't much care for Kevin Spacey, but I persuaded by Derek's review (thanks man)
Althought it's not without faults, it's more interesting than I anticipated because it's about more than just Vegas and counting cards and gambling. It's moreso about what having this ability (counting cards) can do to a person,
It does drag some in the middle and the male lead is flat to me, asd well as most of the cast really, but the movie itself is interesting. And the ending is satisfying.Hey, you should really see this!

Killer Diller
by BrianI'd been wanting to see this film for a while, mostly because I like Lucas Black and Fred Willard both, and the premise seemed ok for a non-thinking movie.
For those of you who have seen Camp (I know there are several on my list), I believe you will like this because the movies share similar themes (loveable misfits band together for support and for a creative outlet).
It's not groundbreaking or uber original, but it's fun and satisfying. A movie to see with friends.Hey, you should really see this!

Shutter (They Are Around Us)
by QuintoFor me, telling an Asian horror film froma another is like telling which Friday the 13th is which; that would make this one Jason Takes Manhattan. I don't if it was the combination of dumb character, unoriginality, no suspense whatsoever and plain boring to watch, but, something about it didn't click with me.
I know J-Horror fans have rejoiced with this one, but I'm better off sticking with A Tale of Two Sisters.
