Pulp Fiction 5.0 Stars
This is my favourite movie of all time. It has everything a movie should and more. Fantastic acting, directing, screenplay and greatly developed characters. I am an massive fan of Quentin Tarantino and he certainly delivers here. The movie contains some of the most memorable moments in movie history including the Ezekiel 25:17 speech given by Jules Winnfield played by the amazing Samuel L. Jackson and the well known Royale with Cheese quote. The cast of this movie is utterly fantastic and they work together like no other cast I have ever seen. You haven't lived if you haven't seen Pulp Fiction and I suggest you definetly do if you haven't already. This movie is in my opinion the greatest movie in history it would be lost without it.

Donnie Darko (2001,  R)
Donnie Darko 5.0 Stars
Being that this is my second favourite movie of all time, of course I absolutely loved everything about it. There was just something that got me hooked the first time I saw it and ever since each viewing has just made it better and better, and you definitely don't feel as confused with it.

Jake Gyllenhall plays someone who is a lot younger than he actually was in real life when he filmed it. But he pulls it off well and you don't for a second know that he isn't that age. And I must say he gives an utterly fantastic performance. He really does put across anger, innocence, confusion and ultimitely acceptance in his performance; things that I all felt at some point or other during the movie.

Who'd have thought that a film about a six-foot tall bunny rabbit mysteriously causing someone to avoid his death then tell him that the world is going to end in a month would work; but it does. I have went over and over what the message or conclusion to the film is and I still cn't completely get it. But after watching it multiple times I have started to understand it a lot more.

So Donnie Darko is my favourite film of all time (after Pulp Fiction of course). Richard Kelley does a fantastic job with his first ever film and I only wish him the best of luck with whatever he has lined up. Well done.

This movie is utterly fantastic. Spectacular performances from Brad Pitt and Edward Norton and it contains one of the greatest plot twists in film history. It is directed by the fantastic David Fincher, director of Se7en and Panic Room. The movie is definetly a man's movie and is directed in a very gritty way which I couldn't see it being otherwise. If you want a great mind-bending, brutal and fantastically thrilling movie with a flabbergasting plot twist then you need to look no further than Fight Club.

This movie was spectacular in my eyes. It was Quentin Tarantino's first movie that he wrote and directed, which suprised me because of how brilliant it is. The acting is fantastic and very believable even if the storyline is a bit farfetched at parts. The dialogue grips you at every word that is said and is accompanied with unique and gripping direction. This movie is definetly one of the best movies of all time in my book and definetly will be remembered.

Memento (2001,  R)
Memento 5.0 Stars
One of the most original and best films ever made. It's overwhelming demand to watch it a second time is very clear here. The first viewing is very confusing but you just know that it is something special. But as you watch it again (and again) it just gets better every time, you always get something new from it; you always notice something you didn't before.

Guy Pierce gives us a fantastic performance as he takes us through his confusing but none the less amazing tale of a frustrating memory problem and tying to find his wife's killer.

Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors working in cinema today and with such amazing following films as Batman Begins and The Presitge; he is a force to be reckoned with.

Fresh, inventive and enthrolling; this film will have you in awe the whole and afterwards. It's backwards style is not only highly original and well executed; it strangely works better than most films that appear in the right order. Right up until the end you are left wondering what order everything happened in; then the end just ties it together and the story just 'clicks'; even if the end is the start (confusing I know)

This is an interesting, fresh and original film on all accounts. Brilliantly executed and with a fantastic script and performances; this is one of the best films ever made.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption 5.0 Stars
An absolutely masterpiece. Quite possibly one of, if not THE greatest film of all time. A spectacular accomplishment on all accounts.

Never have I been so moved by a film in my whole life. The acting here is simply stunning; Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne to the very best of his ability and I don't think anyone else could have played this part.

Morgan Freeman gives a phenominal performance as Andy's friend, Red. Utterly enthrolling withm his usual, ever listenable voice narrating the already wonderful film.

The rest of the supporting cast is flawless; from Bob Gunton's steely and remorseless warden to Clancy Brown's evil prison guard. They got it spot on with the casting; they just seem to work so well together in making the film a brilliant one.

I have never read the book by Stephen King in which this is based on so I have no point of referance when it comes to comparing. But this adaptation can't have been too far off the mark.

American Beauty (1999,  R)
American Beauty 5.0 Stars
Absolutely brilliant -- it really was worth it's 6 0scars (and I don't usually say that). It is just a pleasure to watch every performance, plot point -- every single second of this film is just perfect. One of the few films that I would virtually call 'perfect'

This was and still is Kevin Spacey's very best performance (yes that's right, including The Usual Suspects). He is funny, charming and captivating -- every thing Spacey says in this film you simply don't want to miss; he fully deserved his Oscar. Annette Benning is also fantastic. Her performance is just spot on all the way through; you really start to believe what she is going through. The rest of the supporting cast including the brilliant Chris Cooper, the enthrolling Thora Birch and a special mention for Wes Bentley, who was my favourite from the supporting cast. The only person I had a problem with was Mena Suvari; I just found her annoying.

Sam Mendes gives us a fantastic first-time film that gets better with age. Masterful directing, fantastic performances and a captivating story. It remains one of my all time favourite films and I doubt it will ever change.

The Big Lebowski (1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski 5.0 Stars
I can only think of one way to describe this movie; "Far out man!" This movie is utterly fantastic, virtually perfect in nearly every way. Jeff Bridges gives a masterfully played performance as the wonderfully memorable 'Dude', which Bridge's potrayal of him can be admired in so many ways. Every one of his line's virtually are incredibly quotable, I was very surprised he pulled off this character. John Goodman is also fantastic as his post-vietnam buddy who seems to be angry at everything around him. I was a little dissapointed that Buscemi wasn't on screen more as I really like him. The storyline is so simple yet outrageously far-fetched that you can't help but be glued to it the whole time. It was told in such a way that you think to yourself 'Did I really just see that?' It's amazing what the Coen brothers can do with such a small amount of storyline. All I have left to say is that the Coen brothers have done it again with one of the most well crafted films of all time. I swear you will be quoting this film at every turn after watching this and in the end, always remember, "The Dude abides."

This film is the most powerful movie of all time. No other movie has conveyed racism in such a provoking and violent way is this. Edward Nortn is stunning as the bald headed racist, who is all for "white-power" to say the least. Norton is supperbly suuported by up-and-coming actor Edward Furlong. This film is a powerful, moving and though provoking look at white-power and racism. Not to be missed.

I was absolutely blown away by this movie. It has a very impressive cast including Gabriel Burne as the paranoid Dean Keaton, Steven Baldwin as the "crazy as hell" McManus and who can forget the very paranoid and shifty Verbal Kint played by Kevin Spacey. All of these people and more are all a suspect in who is the man that the fed's are after, the mysterious - Keyser Soze.

The movie is full of unforgettable characters who all have their funny and serious moments which is rare. The defining aspect that makes this film absolutely unforgettable is the twist. I was speechless for about ten minutes after, wondering how the hell the Singer managed to conceal the twist until the end.

One of the greatest films of all time. Full of fantastic performances, funny dialogue, sharply directed and it has one of THE best movie twists of all time. What more could you ask for?

There are no words to describe how phenominal this film. Absolutely everything about it is perfect. This one is far superior to it's predecessor on so many levels. It has superb character development, I'm glad Tarantino spent more time working on the storyline and characters than the over the top fighting sequences (Not that there is anything wrong with them) Uma Thurman gives a stunning performance has The Bride, better than she has given in anything else (Granted she's not been in too many things) Michael Madsen plays an excellent character, one that has so many different levels to it that you would spend a long time trying to break him down. Daryl Hannah is also fantastic as the sadistic, one-eyed Elle Driver. And of course David Carradine gives a fantastic performance as the ending to this magnificent storyline, the one who caused the whole thing, Bill. This film is one of THE best films of all time, it has an awesome soundtrack to go along with it.

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996,  R)
From Dusk Till Dawn 5.0 Stars
One of my favourite horrors of all time, another film which has truly earned the right to be called a classic. I loved the fact that it isn't a horror until about an hour into it, then suddenly vampires come out from no where and weirdly it works.

I love Rodriguez's work and this is no exception. In my opinion this is his best work to date, despite it's low budget. I also love that Quentin Tarantino get's to show his acting here as he's not been in much. He also wrote the screenplay for the film which I don't think it would have been as good if he didn't.

The storyline before the vampires appeared I thought was very interesting. And I would have loved to have seen what would have happened if in fact the vampires didn't appear.

The acting here is superb on everybody's part, especially from Clooney. Who'd have thought he could pull off such a good bad guy but there you have it. I also like Juliette Lewis so that was an added bonus.

Overall an amazing film in my opinion. Some disgusting parts but it's done so comically that it doesn't freak you out. Go and see this if you haven't already, you won't regret it.

The Matrix (1999,  R)
The Matrix 5.0 Stars
What a film, absolutely fantastic. The idea, the script, the acting, the action, the stunts, everything about this film is just fantastic.

The storyline had me hooked from minute one, you really do feel what Neo does; what is the Matrix? And the answer to that question (although completely absurd) is mind-blowing.

The fighting and action in this film is expertly done, making it semi-believable yet very cool. The scene where Neo fight Morpheus is just breath taking. You can tell everyone involved worked very hard on the film, and it certainly paid off.

This film is a milestone not just in action cinema, but cinema in general. A lot of films after this one used some of the same idea, including the style used to create the 'bullet-time' effect.

So overall this film is phenominal in every way possible. Had me hooked from start to finish, and the great thing is; it's a blockbuster with brains! Which is rarely seen in cinema. Definetly see it if you haven't already. Please avoid the horrible sequels.

Absolutely phenominal in every single way possible. From start to finish I was absolutely hooked and it's nice to see Jim Carrey in a very serious role (his first since The Truman Show)

Carrey is just fantastic here giving a strong, solid performance of a man confused about what has happened to him and ultimately doing the exact same thing. And Kate Winslet is also phenominal, giving her very best performance of her career.

The storyline is really complx but once you get into it you start to not mind that. You really have to concentrate on every second of the film to understand it and luckily I am able to do that so I enjoyed it even more.

The supporting cast just fit so well and work incredibly together. From the fresh, unqiue performance from Mark Ruffalo to the mature performance from Tom Wilkinson, the supporting cast are just great.

One of the greatest films of all time and one of, if not THE best performance from comic genius Jim Carrey.

City of God (2002,  R)
City of God 4.5 Stars
While I don't think this film is quite as good as it is said to be, I still thought it was a fantastic film. And even if I don't agree with the high rating that it has, I can see how a person would rate it that high.

Filled with fantastic cinematography, this film is amazing to look at. The contrast between the violent nature of the film and the gorgeous Brazillian backdrop shows just how well opposites can work incredibly well together.

The violence in this film although not completely sick is very uncomfortable to watch; I was open mouthed at some of the scenes. One scene in particular where a small boy is forced to choose whether he wants to be shot in the hand or the foot is one of the most powerful scenes to date.

The cast, although quite unknown, keep the film realistic and believeable while still keeping the entertainment and shock factors. This film has been called "the Brazillian Goodfellas" whcih is a very bold statement to make. And in some ways the film resembles Goodfellas; like the flashback method or the overbearing but very necessary narration. But in terms of content and the way the film actually feels they are totally different. To say that statement is to say that every country should have their own version of Goodfellas. Which leads to the question for me, "What is the British Goodfellas?"

Powerful, shocking, drowned in amazing cinematography but a little uncomfortable to watch. An extremely great film but a little overrated none the less.

Beetlejuice (1988,  PG)
Beetlejuice 4.5 Stars
An absolute classic. Since I remember watching this growing up, I am obviously going to like it. But if I think of it without that in mind the film is still fantastic. It definetly earns the right to be called a classic.

This is Tim Burton at his very best. It has all the usual Burton features; weird characters, gothic-esque settings and an array of stunning colours. But it's just the feel of the film that sets it apart from the rest. One minute the film is a comedy, the next it's a horror, then it's a drama, then abck to comedy. And that's the beauty of Beetlejuice, you get lots of genre's rolled into one. No one makes films quite like Tim Burton.

Michael Keaton is nearly unrecognisable here as the title character but I can think of no one else who could play the part. Everyone else does a great job too in keeping the film flowing and making it work. From Winona Ryder's the depressed goth to Gina Davis' innocent housewife character; the film has got an array of totally different characters and it is interesting to see them clash.

Overall a classic film. Fantastic in every way. Lives long in the memory and it is Tim Burton's best. Period.

Mulholland Drive (2001,  R)
Mulholland Drive 5.0 Stars
This film is unique with a capital U-N-I-Q-U-E. I honestly have never seen a film quite like this one. One as mind-twisting, one as surreal or one as weird as this one. The film may start out normal (echoes of Lynch's earlier film Blue Velvet) but slowly becomes very weird and quite confusing. But in a Requiem for a Dream style fashion; confusing in a masterful way.

The whole film is just completely masterful. Whether you end up liking this or not (and this goes for any Lynch film) you simply have to admit that it is masterful work you have just witnessed. The film fucks with your mind, leads you down several paths that hint at the norm but then the film throws you back into the land of surrealism and any sense of normality gets flushed away.

Naomi Watts did an amazing job as the lead, but I was wondering why Lynch favourite Laura Dern never got the part, she was actually no where to be seen in this movie. Which is almost as strange as the movie itself. Some supporting characters that at first seem random and pointless but by the end, even if the whole film isn't explained to you in a spoon-feeding fashion (which I hate) these characters become useful and essential.

The film is in places a very difficult watch with some scenes that just plain freak the hell out of you, well me anyway. There is also a suprising comedic element to some parts of the film, which from what I got from it was to show you a contrast from the surreal.

I actually have theory of my own as to what the film is all about which is the beauty and essentialy the whole point to Lynch's films. He wants you to not comprehend exactly what you have witnessed, he wants you as a viewer to take away whatever you want from watching the film. There is no concrete explanation at the end of this film and I am so glad that it is that way.

Now I have a few Lynch films under my belt I am positively convinced that he is a master filmmaker in every sense of the word. Obviously he is an acquired taste but whatever you think of one of his films by the end you simply can't deny you've just witnessed a master at work.

Con Air 4.5 Stars
One of my favourite action films of all time. I am sad to say they don't make action movies like this anymore; why oh why? The cinema is a lot worse off without top notch action movies like this.

From start to finish you are hooked on whatever is going on whether it be the over the top action, surprisingly funny dialogue or nail biting tension. This is one of the few big budget, box office smashes that are actually worth there hype.

They couldn't have cast this film better, they got it absolutely spot on. Nicolas Cage is just a perfect lead and this film and many others give me a strong reason behind why he is one of my favourite actors. John Cusack also is brilliant here, he plays the perfect good guy cop. And as far John Malkovich, I'm am surprised to say he stole the show from Cage. Everything I have seen him in he has been the highlight of and this is no exception. The rest of the cast do a great job here too, managing to not steal the show from any of the leads.

It is weird that this film isn't talked about more considering how high a budget it has. And all that money definetly paid off.

An absolute delight to watch from start to finish. Perfectly cast, stunning action sequences and simple yet effective storyline. Top notch stuff!

Requiem for a Dream (2000,  NC-17)
Requiem for a Dream 4.5 Stars
I almost don't even know where to start with regards to this film. There was one word that popped into my head after watching this; "Masterful"

This truly is one of the most captivating, original and downright creative films in many, many years. The film really hits you hard both mentally (when almost struggling to get through it) and what seemed like physically, like a slap to the face or a punch to the stomach. Requiem is one of those films that I was just in awe in the whole time. Mostly because of Aronofsky's style and techniques of directing; from this film it is extremely clear that he is a genius. He is sure to rise up my rank of favourite directors just as soon as I see another one of his sure to be brilliant films.

The performances here also hold up against everything else brilliant. Burstyn is believable and extremely weird as arguably the 'main' character here, although this film doesn't demand you to know exactly who that is. Jared Leto is always amazing as a supporting actor who always backs-up nicely the leads in other films. Here he gives an AMAZING performance that is completely captivating and entirely believable in every single way. Jennifer Connelly's performance goes without saying; it's stellar. And who'd have thought that Marlon 'Little Man' Wayan's could actually give a great performance? But he does here, even if he is minor.

It's weird to say but I was captivated with a film about drug taking. It's probably the only time I will be, especially about one that showcases it in such a graphic way. The film has a strong and very clear message that you strangely might not get right away but you know you've learned something regardless.

Requiem for a Dream is a film that will live long in my memory, one that I am sure to watch over and over even if it IS one of THE most uncomfortable films I have ever witnessed. Aronofsky is easily one of the greatest creative directors of all time, simply from this ONE film. The film isn't perfect however, for reasons I can't quite put my finger on but after repeat viewings I'm sure I will realise what they are. Just prepare after watching to have a lie down for a while, that's if you aren't already...

GoodFellas (1990,  R)
GoodFellas 5.0 Stars
THE best gangster film of all time. This film is absolutely flaw-free, everything is done down to absolute perfection. The highly under-used Ray Liotta gives his best performance, creating a sort of independant and cautious character that at times is sympathetic but at others cares for no one but himself. His powerful narrating gives the film it's much needed pace. Joe Pesci gives also his best performance and also one of the best performances from any actor. His character is both hilarious and terrifying making you stay on the edge of your seat, waiting and wondering at what he's going to do next, you just never know. Robert De Niro gives a slight background role that seems over-shadowed by Pesci and Liotta, but a powerful performance none the less. He proves once again that he is most comfortable when in the very capable hands of Martin Scorsese who with this film, creates a masterpiece that he will NEVER beat. The movie is soaked with quirky dialogue, shocking scenes and outbursts of violence that for once fit really well. Overall you will never find a better gangster film than Goodfellas, or a much better film in general.

What a brilliant film. Nearly everything about it is fanatastic, the directing, script, the acting, is excellent. Uma Thurman stands tall here in what I think is a great performance as a lead. She surprised me with her commitment to the role, as she learned japanese and martial arts for this movie alone. Lucy Lui is fantastic here, even better than Thurman possibly, and her character will stay in the mind for a long time. The fight sequences are jaw dropping, although they are fairly over the top. It's good to see Tarantino show his love for martail arts and he conveys that love with the up most talent and he clearly shows he knows a thing or two about it. One word: WOW! This film was just utterly phenominal in every way possible. I never have enjoyed a foreign film as much as I did enjoy this.

The storyline is the most shocking I have ever heard of. The fact that the adults take this game as an ACTUAL game, an everyday occurence instead of taking as something which is just sick and horrific. I was amazed with how calm some of the grown ups were, acting as if for example the instruction video was just another classroom lecture, it is simply shocking.

I don't usually like foreign films, especially one's with subtitles but after seeing this I will definetly rethink my logic and watch more of them. The acting here is amazing, very believable under very unbelievable circumstances.

The film at first does not seem like a gory film, and in a respect it is not. But those scenes are crucial in making the film shocking and jaw-dropping which it most definetly should be.

From now I will watch more and more foregin films, especially japanese cinema. This film was phenominal, I could watch it again and again simply to feel the jaw-dropping effect it has on you.

Steve Buscemi is hilarious as always, as is McDormand and everyone else. The film should have got more of it's 7 Oscars that it was nominated for, as it only won 2. The storyline is a bit far-fetched but the comedy laced through it made that not matter. Also I couldn't stop laughing at the over-use of the word "yah" in the film, it was said every sentence virtually. I can't believe I haven't watched this film sooner, it is just fantastic. My favourite horror film of all time is Saw but now that I have seen this masterpiece, I may have to rethink some things.

Jack Nicholson is at his very best here, he gives a chilling performance who multiple raised eyebrows and creepy speeches. Some of the scenes including one with an old woman that is the first one in a while that has truly scared me.

I have to agree with a couple of other people who say the pacing is uneven at parts (especially towards the end) but that doesn't matter because the rest of the film is just so well done.

A truly mezmerizing film. It is the most fantastically original idea I have ever seen and Peter Weir pulls the direction of fantastically. Jim Carrey with little effort gives his best preforamnce of his entire career. It's amazing how he can switch from funny to serious in a split second. Everyone else in the move is superbly cast with no faults with anyone. The story is very sad yet very distant at the same time. It gives us a brillaint insight into the needs of the government to control and watch our every move. An absolutely stunner of a movie. From start to finish I was absolutely enthrolled, couldn't take my eyes off screen wondering just what the hell is going on. Where are they? Who has put them there? And why? All of these questions are answered slowly but surely throghout until the astonishing twist at the end.

The storyline is one of the most fascinating ones I have come across ever. You really want to find out the answers to all the puzzling questions that you start to think of from minute one.

The suspense is masterfully done and where the film could have been awful, thankfully the makers kept it from falling into any cliched traps. The quality of this film for it being a very low budget one is just amazing. Some of the flashback scenes are very gory so it showed please even the most die-hard of horror fans.

The downside here is the acting. It isn't the best I've seen to say the least but keep in mind one of the main characters is acting in his first role so he does an okay job considering. Cary Elwes I have rarely seen, so I have nothing to compare the qaulity of his performance too, but I guess he gets the job done.

Overall this is my favourite horror movie of all time. A masterful piece of work that will leave you speachless (Quick, go see it if you haven't already before someone ruins the ending for you!)

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979,  R)
Monty Python's Life of Brian 4.5 Stars
An absolute classic. Hilarious at most points but with some jokes that make you cringe. The accusations in the USA especially of it making a fool of Jesus are absurd as the film isn't even about him! I would have to say though that even though it is hilarious, it's not as funny as the Holy Grail. I think it lacked a certain timing of the jokes that the Holy Grail had but it's funny none the less. The Monty Python team have given us some of the best laughs and they certainlt don't fail here as they all give great, hilarious performances. Particularly from the alte Graham Chapman. Overall a classic comedy, one of the best, but it's no Holy Grail.
