Twilight - PG-13 "Adaptations of anything to film, whether it be a book, a video game or a comic, are always going to annoy loyal fans of the source material if the filmmakers happen to change even the tiniest of details. But for anyone not familiar with the source, watching a film adaptation can be a great experience because you get to watch it with no preconceived notion as to how it should turn out.

I'm sure this will be the case for many with Twilight, as it is with me, which makes it even more surprising that I really liked it. Perhaps not having any knowledge about it beforehand allowed for any changes through adaptation to go unnoticed and therefore forgiven. Twilight is not the event movie that it's been made out to be, but it's an enjoyable film that introduces some great new ideas to the well-worn vampire mythology."

Changeling - R "It has been said that the best stories come from real life. Now even though that doesn't bode well for something like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, it nonetheless is true for Clint Eastwood's latest, Changeling. This is a truly real, classically made, nuts and bolts motion picture that compels from start to finish."

Body of Lies - R "Body of Lies is perhaps the most consistently solid motion picture of 2008 thus far. It offers great performances, expert direction, and a sense of realism seldom captured in this type of film. It buries us deep into events timely and relevant to real life, so much so that it requires that the viewer pay close attention throughout, but it never loses sight of the importance of it's characters."

W. - PG-13 "There aren't many US presidents it would be fitting to make a biopic about while they are still in office. With most you need a few years for the dust to settle and then you can refresh everyone's memory. But President Bush is one of those rare cases where I think it's best to make the film now, to strike while the iron's hot. It's just a shame, then, that not all is done to paint a complete portrait of the man in this movie, although you can't exactly blame one for trying."

Quantum of Solace - PG-13 "The Bond refresher by the name of Casino Royale a couple of years ago surpassed expectations of what the franchise could potentially be. It was about as good as they could have made it, and even more impressive because they were effectively starting from scratch. So there has inevitably been excitement and apprehensive curiosity about whether the follow up could be as good.

And although Quantum of Solace is a few notches down the ladder from Casino Royale, in fact I fear the word 'disappointment' will be used quite often amongst both fans and critics alike, it's still impressive in its action-focused intents. However one-track-minded that ultimately may be."

Burn After Reading - R "It's no surprise to find that the ever brilliant Coen brothers have made a quality motion picture once again. With the amount of talent that they have for both direction and writing, as well as the insanely impressive cast, it's no wonder the brothers have done it again. However what is surprising about their latest offering is it's so different from most of what they've done before, particularly last year's Oscar winning No Country for Old Men, and it's a testament to what good filmmakers these two really are that they can switch gears so easily from one film to the next."

Death Race - R "While lack of depth has held most of director Paul W. S. Anderson's movies back (the only remotely deep film on his resume is the underrated Event Horizon), Death Race works in spite of it. For what it is - mindless entertainment - it works on the levels you'd hope for, even if depth is the furthest thing from its sights."

Righteous Kill - R "For any true film fan, seeing legends Al Pacino and Robert De Niro on screen together should be one of life's highest priorities. Yes, they were both in The Godfather Part II (where technically De Niro played Pacino's father) and Heat but they never were on screen together for an extended or satisfying period of time. Along comes Righteous Kill, the film we've all been waiting for in order to see these two acting heavyweights team up. It's for that reason that I find myself inconceivably disappointed by it; not even two of the best actors to have ever lived can save this nonsense."

Taken - PG-13 "It's really something when a film can be talked about negatively in an overall way in spite of some very fine elements. Taken is one such a film; it has some impressive fight sequences and a well judged pace but it's morally suspect and thus most of the enjoyment gets sacrificed and overall leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth."

The Strangers - R "It disappoints me, but not necessarily surprises me, to proclaim The Strangers a failed attempt at a film of its well-worn genre. It is made up of almost endless attempts at scaring its audience but succeeds with a very small number of them. It's very well made for what it is but that isn't exactly a good thing when what it is is nothing we haven't seen before, or, for that matter, done a hell of a lot better."

Tropic Thunder - R "It seems like the age of the cheap comedy is over. Now it seems it's all about spending as much money as you can and hoping to achieve the laughs just the same. Tropic Thunder is the latest example of this; a film with a peculiar mix of satire, about Hollywood and the like, and action set-pieces. The film follows a group of actors while they are working on a war movie who somehow end up in an actual war-zone and are forced to become the real soldiers as they have been portraying. It works, for the most part, as a comedy, but it goes a bit too far with the action for my liking."

Pineapple Express - R "It seems like Judd Apatow's involvement in Pineapple Express on just the producing and story creation side of things is a better idea than full on writing and directing, as it gives some other writers and comedic talents a chance to throw in their two cents. I have been begging for months now for another film to come along and make me split my sides with laughter and I am very glad to say Pineapple Express is that film. A comedy about stoners it may be, but you don't need to be inebriated in any way to get the jokes."

Bangkok Dangerous - R "Fans of cinema can breathe a sigh of relief with the Pang Brothers' remake of their own 1999 film Bangkok Dangerous, as it's not as bad as it very well could have been. Too often does Hollywood remake Asian films but with zero effort put forth and thus zero quality is apparent with most of them. However this remake is a decent enough affair, and while it's nothing overly great, it manages to dodge the bullets which usually result in these remakes being entirely wretched."

RocknRolla - R "It seems the negative feedback Ritchie received after branching out has scared him back into his own neck of the woods, and he has come up with RocknRolla, a film which, because of eager anticipation and the fact I know just how good he can be, is a huge disappointment, having only a few saving graces to save it from complete failure."

Mute Witness - R "Mute Witness is a film of two halves, a theme we've seen many a time in the world of the movies. The first half is a tense, engaging, heart-pounding roller coaster with attributes of claustrophobia and genuine trepidation but the second sadly descends into silly fare that veers from being eye-rolling to being a strange kind of comedic farce."

Step Brothers - R "Will Ferrell's shtick seems to be getting tired. His ability to garner laughs stopped after Anchorman (which I consider to be his highest cinematic achievement) and all the way through stuff like Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro, he has been unable to make me laugh like he used to. But that has stopped for the time being because although Step Brothers shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentences as "best comedies ever" or even "best of the year", with the help of John C. Reilly making up the duo, I am glad to say that a Will Ferrell comedy was able to make me laugh again."

Irreversible - Unrated "Those who are up to the task of enduring Irreversible will find much of worth in the experience. But those who can't take the extreme, in this case an almost ten minute on-screen rape and the brutal murder of a man by fire extinguisher to the head, will no doubt stop watching before the conclusion of scene one."

Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story - R "A Cock and Bull Story is an undeniably rare film. Adapted from the classic novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Stern, one which was considered to be pretty much unfilmable, director Michael Winterbottom has successfully adapted it by making the movie about the very act of making the movie. On paper this sounds like an impossible task in and of itself but it's handled with such skill and shrewd wit that one wonders whether this is the only way this story could ever be told."

Get Smart - PG-13 "Get Smart comes to us as a big-screen adaptation of an old TV show, an exercise that has succeeded and failed in equal measure in the past. It plays well as both a throwback for anyone who watched the show or was around in the general era but also sits comfortably as a modern action/comedy flick, with the key element of a likable leading guy to carry it along. And although at its core it's not got the most original of basic storylines, Get Smart is successful at delivering good solid laughs at just the right moments and surprisingly impressive action to go along with it."
