I've not seen a superduper bad-ass "holy shit, that was effing cool!" action movie like this in a loooooooooong time. I think the last time a movie got me this freakin' jazzed was probably Bad Boys 2 (although this one has more story and character to it).

For those who've seen the previews and think it looks "meh" but you dig the action film genre when it's got bad-ass to it, JUST GO SEE IT!

If you're tired of living a mundane life and are totally for individuality - JUST GO SEE IT!

For some it's flawed, but for me, it's near-perfection.

The only thing for me keeping this from a full 5 star rating is the fact the ending epilogue takes too long to get to. (although it's the absolute perfect finale)

It also took the basic idea for the Equilibrium "Hall of Mirrors" shoot-out and did it so far better that I didn't even realize was possible. Holy shit, this movie was AWESOME! O_O
Stuck Stuck R 4.5 Stars
Stuart Gordon barely ever disappoints (and when he does, it's usually because he's just being totally B-movie) and this is no exception. Taking the lessens learned in brutality from King of the Ants and the satirical edge of Edmond, combining it with his great classic B-movie flavor, Stuart Gordon has made one intense as hell horror film. Although the film's predictable as can be, he doesn't make it any less gripping and it never really lets up on the suspense. Either the fear of being caught, the fear of being killed, or the fear of some new agony that's going to come your way.

Though it was a little hard to get used to Mena Suvari with corn-rows. o_o

Stephen Rea fans, Gordon fans, and brutal horror fans should give this a shot. It ain't a chiller/spook film, it's just a mean B-movie with some great old-school symbolism thrown in, a kick-ass ending, some good humor, and one extremely great performance from Stephen Rea.

Class act! :D

What others are seeing in this, I did not. I understand the film and the great qualities of it, I just disliked the main character so much and the people around him (who, ironically, are far worse in most cases) that I just didn't connect. I've never seen a comedy that made me so disgusted to be a human being.

Though, Danny is a great actor. If he could channel this into, I dunno, a drama, that'd be pretty awesome. :P

Okay, so Chuck The Truck Wallis jokes were funneh.
The Incredible Hulk The Incredible Hulk PG-13 4.0 Stars
Loved the Blomsky stuff, loved most of William Hurt (especially his final scene), but I didn't connect with Norton and Liv that much at all. The Hulk scenes were AWESOME and Louis Leterrier has really come into his own as his own director...I just wish the script had a little more meat, or a little less TV show references. (I was a fan of the show when I was a kid, but this was kind of pushing it. :))

For Hulk fans, it gives you the smash'em-up you want, but you get kind of bored. Perhaps going THIS far away from Ang Lee's symbolic take was maybe not the best idea, strange as that sounds.
Kantoku - Banzai! (Glory to the Filmmaker!) Kantoku - Banzai! (Glory to the Filmmaker!) Unrated 4.0 Stars
It's a lot slower than Takeshis (I dozed off during the Karate scene, though I was also tired), but I liked how it was really for filmmakers, while Takeshis' was for the fans of Kitano's work. The way he completely nailed his Yakuza film style in a parody fashion made me laugh like crazy and I was chuckling insanely right away when the Ozu homage came in. There's so many good gags about the idiocy of how the film "industry" works, where the art no longer is important and sort of working to find elements that are successful.

The symbolism as the film goes towards the end just hit me also, where there's a remark early in the film made about the love stories being women devoted to a man who isn't interested in her, a genre that wants the director but he doesn't want to do. And at the end, with all the insanity, he finally has a reason to go for it, and so he devotes himself to that. That's the glory - destroying the cliches and making something that's truly your own. (this'll make more sense when you see the film - it's very, VERY difficult to spoil it)

I liked it, though I hope he makes his next self-referential film a little more lean and faster in pace. Kitano's slow, but melodic, dramatically interesting, etc. This...was tiring. o_o

But, for fans of Japanese cinema, for filmmakers themselves, and huge-time Kitano fiends like me this is still a must-see. :D
Paprika Paprika R 4.5 Stars
When making a film about dreams, it makes logical sense to not make any sense or logic whatsoever. The idea of the dream world merging with ours is a confusing concept, there never seems to be a set of ground rules, and it seems like it shifts here and there for insanity's sake.

And of course, I love that. :D Sometimes movies have to be surreal and confusing. Dreams and confusion are a big thing for me, typically I have dreams that are very similar to this film and it was kinda cool to see that in an actual narrative film.

And it's nice to see an anime film that just tells a damn story. No message, no hoopla, just tell the story and make it good. And for me, I got what I wanted from it.

Definitely not for everyone. o_o

    Chopper Chopper
    4.0 Stars by El Hombre
Years before he would have his turn as Bruce Banner in HULK, Eric Bana would put on weight to play the charismatic Mark "Chopper" Read, who is something of a celebrity in his native land because of his comfortable and charming approach , violent streak, and the distinct possibility that he's completely mad. Here, he provides background with a very subjective point of memory and truth.

Chopper wasn't made for mass appeal, but if you have a stomach for the violence - which is not frequent but certainly strong - then this offbeat character study with a darkly comic edge might be for you.

All of the acting and story telling here is top notch.

Tak Fujimoto might have gone off the deep end with the dutch angles, but it's forgivable.

Once Were Warriors Once Were Warriors
    4.5 Stars by El Hombre
Brutally honest, 'Once Were Warriors' exposes issues that are common to all urban societies, not just those in New Zealand. The film pulls no punches and is not really suited to the faint-hearted, but for those willing to make the effort to watch it, this movie provides rewards.

The outstanding cast makes each of the characters deep and effective, and although they are not all particularly likeable, they are sympathetic. Outstanding New Zealand film that explores modern Maori life with great sympathy and great style.

Jing wu ying xiong (Fist of Legend) Jing wu ying xiong (Fist of Legend)
    4.0 Stars by El Hombre
Fist of Legend is a loose remake of one of Bruce Lee's most popular Chinese films, Fist of Fury (a.k.a. The Chinese Connection). The plot is basically the same, but some details differ greatly. Fist of Fury had a simple moral: The Japanese are bad. Set during a time when the Chinese were second class citizens in their own country, Bruce Lee's acts of defiance against the Japanese authorities were big crowd pleasers.

Jet Li's version of the story is a different take on the material. The only evil Japanese character in the whole film is Fujita, and Chen Zhen is a victim of discrimination, not from the Japanese, but from the Chinese of Shanghai because he has a Japanese girlfriend. Murder, intrigue, deception and most importantly, some of my most favorite fight sequences in all of the kung-fu movies I've seen. Each fight in the film gets better and better.

Die Mommie Die Die Mommie Die
    3.0 Stars by El Hombre
Die Mommie Die is more than a modern take on melodramas from the '50s and '60s in which unpleasant situations were blown out of proportion in order to let people like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford strut their stuff.

Imagine stepping back in time, going to the movies and catching a Bette Davis flick, only without Bette Davis. The actress might be missing, but the style, plot elements and acting are all very similar. Cross-dresser Charles Busch in the lead role is every bit as glamorous and classy, even if the humor is not. Everything is sensationalized, twisted and overly dramatic, and like most strong parodies, "Die Mommie Die!" doesn't wear out its' welcome.
    Photobucket
A really good cast and foul humor. With a little tightening up from the director, this could've been really great. Still, well worth watching for the performances and an ode to old style filmaking.

    Invasion! Invasion!
    4.0 Stars by El Hombre
This movie is funny, it's original, it's engaging, it has gore, it has romance, clever dialogue, and most importantly and unlike those films that it's satirizing, it actually has some great actors impersonating bad ones. One actor who truly made this film stand out was Campbell Scott, playing an admirable scientist who is always spouting such great lines. Campbell plays his role perfectly, delivering every cheezy line with overconfidence.

If you are a fan of 1950s science fiction like I am, you will find this a very pleasant spoof with lots of hilarious quotes, odd characters, slimy aliens and Fiona Leowi in all of her breathless, eye-batting glory.

The patiently-paced film is meant to draw us into the small community of people who work at a diner, and "touching moments" where these characters connect, are more the style than any kind of a "thriller" theme. In any case, overall it's a high quality film and well worth seeing if you get the chance, but you won't be missing much if you don't.

Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death

One of the best bad movies I've ever seen.

In the dark unexplored Avocado jungles of Southern California, A sexy feminist professor must venture deep inside to convince the Piranha women (i.e. cannibal women) to leave their homes for lovely Condos in Malibu.

I'm not making this up. One of the best lines is "there isn't a a feminist group that's advocates cannibalism, at least not since the 60's"

Plus Bill Maher is in it.
Very, very rarely is a bad movie worth recommending to most people.

Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death is the exception to the standard. The plot is insane enough to hold your interest and the dialog is thoroughly engaging. (it's from the writer of Pretty Woman and Under Siege)

Plus is features Bill Maher, Shannon Tweed and Mrs. Carpenter herself, Adrienne Barbeau.

The story is an interesting attempt to change up what is really nothing more than a standard slasher movie. The idea that a killer is brought to life by someone reading a book is different than most other ideas I've seen in the slasher genre.

Filmed with brown tones, passages from the book are played out on the screen, and then the two worlds begin to merge with some decent stop-motion model effects thrown in for good measure. One of those films I was worried on whether or not I'd enjoy it as much as I did when it was new, but thankfully, it didn't disappoint. Jenny Wright is fun to watch in this ode to the late night B-movie.

Fast and bloody action, complex characterization and subtle character interactions, great cinematography, ferocious battles and insights into death, glory and the human condition that would do Kurosawa, or even Homer, proud.

Just don't expect "wire-fu" because Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Yu Rong Guang (Iron Monkey) are in it. There's enough sword play, spear fighting and archery that the "wire fu" isn't missed. The third act drags a bit but there's enough action to keep one entertained.

A lunatic disguised as a car salesman murders his victims in the confines of his flourescent-lit, wood paneling office.

Kidding of course...however, if there is any doubt remaining in anyone's mind, Slasher has finally come along to put it to rest. Bottom line, you just can't trust a used car salesman.

A very entertaining documentary, that includes a fun soundtrack by original Stax artists and directed by John Landis, about a bizarre indidual who helps car lots clear their older models. I wouldn't buy a car from him, but Michael Bennett's an entertaining guy to watch. This is a much safer way to get the slasher experience without getting burned on a used car lot.

    The Car The Car
    3.0 Stars by El Hombre
Opening with a quote from the irrelevant Anton La Vey, The Car looks like what someone would have come up with after seeing the success of Duel and Jaws, and combined the two. The car was designed by George Barris, and is a hulking brute of a thing, with massive bumpers and headlights like staring eyes.

Proof that you can get away with plenty of plot absurdities (somewhat) if you explain them away with the supernatural. All in all The Car played out like a fun compilation of vehicular kill sequences. Sure there wasn't much depth to the film and some might find it silly, but now that I think about it, anybody renting a horror film called The Car should know what to expect. Still fun, even if for nostalgic reasons, seeing this again after many years has inspired me to install the same car horn and target slow drivers in the left lane.
