As dated as it is, as slow as it can be, this is still one of the most perfect action films of all time in terms of cinematic excellence. Also digging the finale and the justice exacted on the bad guy.

Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) 4.5 Stars
One of the best films ever made. My introduction to Mr. Fukusaku and one of the most inspirational flicks of my later-teens writing. The cast, the script, the direction, they all combined well for me. Although it's not a perfect film and gets a bit slow towards the end, it's an astounding piece of work that's worthy of much of the praise it gets. It isn't the end-all, be-all, but it's an essential with a lot of points it makes and alot of artistic merit. Good stuffs! :D

I seem to be the only person who loves this movie and gets a great deal of wonderful symbolism out of it. Oh well. It's still amazing, though, and it's great to watch late at night in a dark room, to be put into that world of a coming apocalypse at the hands of war. It's stellar stuff.

Eh, loses half-a-star for some cheesiness. But as a fan of the comics, this came together lovely and is one of the few cinematic representations of a comic book that feels both like its source material and like an actual movie. How they got the actors they did seems almost divinely influenced. Awesome flick, even if some don't get into it.

PT Anderson is one of the Gods Among Directors these days. AMAZING film and my personal favorite of his (which is hard, Magnolia also being so great). The script, direction, score, acting - fantastic. Hoffman is also just mindblowing as the scumbag. The texture and vibe of this reminds of the aura of great 60s European films, but combined with a newer American know-how. In ways, it creates a feeling all its own that is unique and unlike any other film you'll ever see. And it's such a touching story to boot. ^_^

Rolling Thunder (1977,  R)
Rolling Thunder 5.0 Stars
The quintessential film of the post-Vietnam loner and the Vet Revenge film. The performances and script are downright freaking SPECTACULAR and this is a memorable film for how it takes such cliche elements and gives them a weight and realism to make the audience entrenched and gripped by the drama.

EDIT: NEW REVIEW. I was able to see this as a real film print on August 16th, which turned this film from just a movie I absolutely love, to one of my favorite films of all time. It wasn't just the audience or the gorgeous print, but the experience in the theater opened my eyes to the brilliance of the movie and I saw now with more aware eyes (especially having seen another John Flynn film, The Outfit, about 6 months ago) that this is the kind of film that knows it can be a masterpiece and tries to be. Not out of pretension, but because the story's really good and the script is great. Some could complain about it, but it delivers the experience you want and gives the audience what they desire - catharsis and release in a hopeless feeling situation.

There is nothing like seeing the audience go crazy with applause and cheers when Tommy Lee Jones utters the one line, "I'll just get my gear." :D

If you have ANY chance to see this movie, especially at a theater screening, do so!

Slowly growing to become my favorite Sam Peckinpah film. Warren and Isela are wonderful together and the tone, script, music, execution - top notch. It also has one of the most satisfying third acts this story could have gotten. At least, the most fitting. This flick delivers the brutal journey goods!

Leone's best film and one of the better 80s crime films of the time. It's a shame that it hasn't been seen theatrically in the US in its original form. It's so sad what happened to Sergio from the release of this film. It's brilliance, hands down.

From Dusk Till Dawn 4.0 Stars
It doesn't always hold up after the years have past, but this is still an amazing achievement in the "fliparound" genre of going one direction, then adding the supernatural twist. Tarantino's script and performance are great and the tone is unlike any of Robert's other films at times, something I miss in his works following and preceding this.

The story is good for what it is, but where it's at is all the astounding action sequences. This is Heroic Bloodshed movie on a pretty massive and epic scale. And if you can find a version of this movie with a hella good transfer, you're in for a treat with how amazing the cinematography turned out.

Okay, THIS is my favorite Corbucci film. It's very modern and ahead of its time, it has a great rock soundtrack, the cast is a bunch of fun, and it's got Jack Palance as a stoner "man in black" bad guy! This movie rules! :D

Probably Del Toro's best film so far and easily the best fairy tale movie of the decade. A dark and grim look, with heavy symbolism of varraying degrees, and some of the best "make your own conclusion" filmmaking ever. And for only $5million USD, this thing looks sweet as can be. When I saw this, I only knew of Fukasaku's Battle Royale. This opened a whole MANSION to me, showing that Kinji had brought us so much with his films. This is a great little piece, that flows and grooves great. It has a great sense of plot, exposition, character, and action. Entertaining, fascinating, emotional, somber, magnificent stuff. The final showdown is also a great "Wild Bunch - Fukasaku-style" type ending.

Ack, didn't comment on this earlier. Blew me away in theaters, was even better on unrated DVD. The fact I list this as one of my favorite movies shocks me. I hated the idea of a remake, but Zack Snyder sold me on it completely. A pretty bad-ass gory as hell fun action/zombie ride. (although it would've been better with slow zombs, of course ;))

One of the best fairy tale/legendary stories ever done on film. I'd love to say it's my personal favorite Ridley Scott film (and am seriously tempted to), but I know Blade Runner and Alien would be severely unhappy with me. It is, however, a fantastic piece of work. BUT DO NOT WATCH THE THEATRICAL EDITION!

My first John Woo movie! Absolute fun and although he repeats so many gags, this is an awesome, fun, exciting action flick. It has the cliches, the flair, and style that's necessary to combine the amazing theatrics of Woo's HK work with the (by this point) stale US action genre. It combines well and the style and direction are worthy of study for any action film student.

Masterful use of the cinema to create poetry. Visual, stylistic poetry. Incredible and riveting all throughout. Worthy of every bit of praise it has gotten. This is a subtle, atmospheric film that I can easily say is the Coens doing their version of a bleak 70s drama. It has got moments of pure Rolling Thunder, pure Charly Varrick, and a variety of others. It is meticulous, deliberate, and brilliant. Huzzah!

Full of interesting ideas, grim possibilities, and truths that shock the viewer. The texture of the film is what makes it for me and I love the presentation of it. Both visually and in terms of drama. It has such a cynical streak, I love it. Nicolas Cage hasn't been in much good lately, but this is a shining achievement. I only hope he can be more successful doing movies like this.
