| Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) - R | This is a really special wee film. Weirdly set in what seems like the 80's Sweden, it represents a very fresh take on a well worn genre (not telling). | X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 | Kids'll love it I'm sure, but this was a bit too silly for my tastes. When you're dealing in the 'fantasy' genre, it's pretty important that you do all you can to help viewers suspent their disbelief, but this seems to work to do the opposite, with a whole load of stuff included that is just daft, or doesn't make sense (Gambit? - he doesn't even work in the pages of a comic! "playing cards are his weapons!" come on...), There are scenes with characters running up walls that are only slightly more believable than the Adam West Batman equivalent. A few cool(ish) set pieces (the climactic fight sequence, while predictable, was at least a bit more imaginative in it's execution) make it bearable, but this doesn't come close to the feel of even the worst X-men film. This review needs to be split into 2 parts: 1) The story: this isn't particularly imaginative or sophisticated, although there are a few big laughs from the kids along the way. It's all a bit rushed and there's little in the way of character development, etc. 2) The animation: we went to the 3D showing and I have to say that some of the sequencies were really fantastic. The characters, scenery, crowd scenes and sense of scale are all amazing and I do now believe that wearing silly glasses is going to become part of the standard cinema-going experience sooner, rather than later - great fun!
So, all-together, this was very enjoyable. But if the same film was released in a year or two's time I think it might pass as about average (once the 3D novelty has worn off a bit) - script is king! |

| Coraline - PG | They've done a really good job of taking the best aspects of the source material to make a compelling and edgy film for slightly older kids. This follows the great tradition of films like Wizard of Oz, Chitty-chitty bang-bang and of course The NIghtmare Before Christmas in that it has some genuinely chilling elements that are used sparingly to develop a feeling of real peril - but it never goes too far. The animation is extremely imaginative and beautifully rendered. I'd recommend the 3D version, as this is used with subtlety for the most part and definately adds to the overall experience. | May 3, 2009 | N/A | |||
