I'm an ER Nurse who loves to get his hands dirty. Love my job, but not as much as I love sitting down to a movie. Had a bit of a wasted youth and have seen some of the most obscure movies imaginable.
Little hard to find time for movies these days, but in this fast paced world, we all need to stop and get lost in another world for a few hours from time to time. Make time for a movie folks, you'll be more sane for it!! Don't try adding me if your profile is widget city. or if you've not bothered to review some movies. I hate rejecting people. I try not to recommend mainstream stuff, 'cos the lesser seen movies seem to be better, and I like to introduce people to new things. Am very happily married, with a baby on the way!!! Trying to fit in as many movies as I can for now! Oh, and I'm open to any recommendations you can suggest. Anything at all. |

Atonement
R
After hearing a few less than glowing reviews I was a bit jubious about this one, but it turned out to be pretty beautiful. An epic love story with some beautiful cinematography and solid acting throughout. Tragic and endearing in a very British way. Perhaps overrated and the sneaky ending was a very dirty trick, but the hopeless romantic in me saw past all that. And the Dunkirk scene.... WOW! Briony truly deserves to be one of the most hated characters in recent movie history. Wish I'd read the book first.
The Golden Compass
PG-13
What's going on?!?!? Seriously! Since LOTR, these fantasy rip offs have been spawned pretty regularly and this one won 'Best Visual Effects'? Okay, there are lots of effects and it shows. Looks nice, but sadly, that's at the expense of story, character development, acting and well .... almost anything interesting. Dakota Blue Richards was great in the lead and the bears were nice to look at, but one of my favorite genres is slowly being killed by vague adaptations of only moderately memorable novels. Sorry, it looks nice, but that's all.
27 Dresses
PG-13
Cheesy, girly and very sickly sweet. As romantic comedies go, it's nothing special and seems to drag a bit at times. The laughs are scarce and while there are lots of beautiful people to look at, it never truly engaged me (no pun intended). Heigl is gorgeous and really does show some glimmers of a natural, fresh and thoroughly delightful comedic talent. And even she couldn't stop me feeling ever so slightly nauseous throughout. So cute and fluffy, it was bound to be less than substantial. Absolute chick flick and guys.... you have been warned.
I Am Legend
PG-13
Went into this one a little cold. Managed to avoid spoilers and had only a little knowledge of the book, or Hestons 'Omega Man' as prior knowledge and I absolutely loved this one. The first two thirds are incredible. Will Smith builds tension and sympathy for his character, and the action scenes are pretty damned amazing. Some questionable CGI aside, the overall atmosphere was simply intense. The third act fell a bit short and had a rather awkward ending, but the thrills far outweighed a few minor flaws. Maybe going in cold is a bonus sometimes. (Just a thought).
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (AVP 2)
R
The first movie was disappointing and this one lives up to the first. Equally disappointing. Teens get popped off in horror movie style. Most of the movie is so dark you can barely figure out what's going on and as for storyline... well, was there one? Some action and gore, but mostly boring, dull and redundant. With such great source material, why can't they make a decent AVP movie?!?!? Gimme Arnie or Ripley anyday! Could have been great, just waiting for that 3rd strike now!
Introducing the Dwights (Clubland)
R
I'll watch Brenda Blethyn in anything. Her comedy usually brightens up even the bleakest film and in this little gem, she has to work hard. This delightful little insight into a broken Australian home is interesting and quite tragic. Blethyn has some great moments , but ultimately, this is a hard hitting drama thanks to an exceptional young Aussie cast. Bring the tissues and don't expect a comedy. Powerful and heartbreaking, but with a few light moments too. Marketed as "Clubland" here 'down-under'.

True Romance
R
Awesome Movie!! Watch it at least once a year. Great cast and the Dennis Hopper/Christopher Walken scene is classic. Gary Oldman is great and watch for Brad Pitt in a hilarious cameo as Floyd. Played the theme music for our wedding too. Don't miss this movie.
2.
Léon (The Professional)
R
Amazing himan film. Infinitely cool with such a great cast. Jean Renos quiet, supposedly heartless hitman is well played against a very young Portman. Gary Oldman is terrifying as the psychopathic baddie. Great stuff.
3.
The Killer (Dip huet seung hung)
Unrated
Woo's greatest achievement. Awesome story. Totally captivating thanks to the 2 lead actors. Seen it 6 times and still not tired of this film.
4.
GoodFellas
R
Scorsese at his stylish best. Can't ever see Ray Liotta without thinking of this film. If ever a film deserved an Oscar in 1990.......
5.
Requiem for a Dream
NC-17
This should be prerequisite viewing for all film fans and wayward teens. Shocking, brutal and astounding. Just what makes a socially acceptable drug addict anyway? Unforgettable stuff. Will haunt you forever.
6.
The Untouchables
R
Brilliant. Atmospheric, tense, great performances and the finsl scene on the stairs is legendary. Connery has some incredible lines. De Niro is badass with a baseball bat.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
by BrianIn general, the fantasy film genre isn't for me, but Mike wanted to see it, and I was game enough.
I was pleasantly surprised; it was better than the first, I thought by a mile, and the pacing was generally good.
A word to parents with young children: the film is really very violent with prolonged fighting scenes, etc. May not be appropriate for some kids.
Good, but I'm waiting for the Crystal Skull :)Hey, you should really see this!

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
by HarshWhat can i say? This is just another masterpiece by Sidney Lumet which also features very good performances by both Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of the best movies of 2007. Strongly recommended to everyone...
P.S - This movie is Rated R for a scene of strong graphic sexuality, nudity, violence, drug use and language.Hey, you should really see this!

Little Children
by DanIf I had to compare this to another movie, i'd have to say American Beauty in the fact that picturesque suburbia is not always what it seems. Beautifully shot, great cast, interesting plot twists. Some people have mentioned the humour. I personally didn't find it funny, at times I even found it quite uncomfortable to watch. Jackie Earle Haley was brilliant as the creepy, self loathing sex offender. One scene in particular in which he goes on a date was very shocking. It seemed most of the characters in the movie were looking for some kind of redemption. A very good movie.
American Beauty's little sister. More stories from not-so-perfect suburbia!

Snow Cake
by DanA very touching movie with great, realistic performances and very real humour. The death of a hitchiker leads Alex, a man with his own demons to the victims mother, Linda. She is autistic and grieves in a very different way to Alex. Linda insists Alex stays with her at least until 'trash day', because she doesn't like to touch trash. A wonderful relationship blossoms between them, and also between Alex and Linda's neighbour Maggie. Between them, they help Alex come to terms with his past. An incredible movie!
One of those hidden gems, a wonderful movie

Man of the Year
by scottwilliams plays a tv talk show host, very similer to jon stewert, who after bringing up, maybe i should run for president,,, he does, he secures his nomination and goes to work, using his razor sharpe wit to woo the tv audiance and anyone who will listen, but the new polling booth computer voting system is faulty and maybe rigged, so if he wins and ecomes president is it a genuin win, a worker for that company speaks out, and her life is targeted for ruin, wyes this oviously is based on events in u.s when bush came from nowhere and won, as some say due to balled voting fixing, so a interesting concept, williams is great also, doing some great scenes of stand up, to get him self noticed, williams does this perfectly, and is a joy to watch, its never clear wether he will win and take up office, as story is told well and not predictable, and final outcome may be a little mushy for some, but it gets its message across well, a relevent for whats happend in recent past, and great to see williamsfinding great roles again

Camp Out
by BrianI wanted to see this documentary because its subject are so different from. Ten campers trying to reconcile their Christian faith and their homosexuality.
I never had that problem because religion isn't a big part of my life at all, but it was interesting to see, and would be good viewing for gay teens dealing with the same issues.Maybe for you, maybe not for you but a fairly well done documentary. You may know people that you could tell them about this.

Na Kamalei: Men of Hula
by JDA fantastically engaging documentary that has as much beauty and grace as the subjects and the dances. In this brief film, we learn the history of hula, the man responsible for bringing hula back to the men and the gentlemen who have become a troupe who learn and then compete for a grand title.
The man who brought this amazing group together is Robert Cazimero. The competition that he works his all-male hula group is called the Merrie Monarch Festival. Cazimero's group is the oldest group in Hawaii and their journey took place in 2005. That was also the 30th anniversary of the group?s existence. This was a great production which shines with the island's beauty and the humanity of the precious Hawaiian culture. It is so amazing that you will quickly see why this became an award-winning documentary. My only reason for not giving this doc a five-star rating was that it clocks in at fifty-seven minutes. I wished it was longer.Hey, you should really see this! It is appearing on some PBS stations in the U.S. If you have access to Public Broadcasting Service, check the internet for the program called "Independent Lens." This is a great program as it showcases many newer documentaries. This title is also available on DVD. Worth your time if you like the power of dance and the gorgeous setting of the Hawiian islands. Aloha everyone. I'll be back in California after a brief visit to Montana!!
