Gattaca
PG-13
Science, discrimination, human nature. I wouldn't say that this is the best movie ever made, but I like it immensely. Good science-fiction needs no special effects, laser light shows, inter-galactic battles, save the world theories and prosthetic morphs of organic material. It is about an ideal, a question lying within the specter of technology; it is a moral statement, very relevant, believable, and touching.
Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi)
PG
This is one film I have no qualms giving wholehearted props to. It's magical, enchanting, and something so experiential that if I were to describe it in words, I do no justice to Miyazaki's inspired tale. The fantastical unfolds in such a natural way it puts shame to all who think too hard; it's literal without being simplistic -- it's a fairytale... no, it's lots of fairytales, all intricately crafted into one major tale about love.
