Land of the Blind
R
The movie was like a amalgam of ideas and political concepts and the viewer gets bombarded by them, so is never let to think by himself.
The movie is a satire and tries to take a stand against politics, during XX century and the present day, there are references to totalitarianism: communism, fascism, nazism; fundamentalist regimes and, off course, democracy.
The symbol of the elephant puzzled me a bit, so I imagined that is used in the same manner Swift used the symbol of horses.
I remembered that the elephant is a symbol of wisdom and intelligence, so the movie was suggesting that humans lack intelligence, or was the wisdom, or both?!
The first half of the movie is "lighter" in tone, with Tom Hollander as Maximilian II, he's great as the megalomaniac idiot, the ruler of some country .
The second part is pretty much like "1984", but I liked it better then that movie, main reason beeing Ralph Fiennes and his performance.
The movie at times lacked coherence and in parts seemed a tad too ambitious , the scrip wasn't all that great either, without the great cast and the strong acting, the movie could have been a total flop, also the movie doesn't came with anything new or innovative, I already knew that politics is dirty, that totalitarianism means nasty business and that democracy is not all that great either, so I find it a bit patronizing.
that doesn't mean i didn't enjoy the movie, because I did.
The Charge of the Light Brigade
PG-13
I liked this movie, it was well written, well acted, the story, that was inspired by real events, was also very interesting, it had some very amusing moments that came from the ludicrous situations.
It is also pretty accurate, historicaly I mean, depicting with great irony the characters and the events that culminated with "The Charge of the Light Brigade", a charge lead by Lord Cardigan, during the Crimean War, against Russia,in 1854.
I find it very interesting the way the movie used the animations in order to explain political events surrounding the battle, very clever and effective.
Well made antiwar movie, better that a lot of what I've seen lately.
