Antony's Favorite Movies

Fight Club Fight Club R
Time I got round to reviewing my favourite film of all time! To keep the praise short, Fight Club boasts alarmingly good performances (Norton and Pitt match each other perfectly), a superb script adapted from Chuck Palahniuk, a killer score from the Dust Brothers and masterful direction by David Fincher. The film is, for me, the greatest documentation of the modern male psyche, and a spiteful resentment of what the modern world has doen to us in making us revolt from our base humanity. It's also funnier than you'd think!
Blade Runner Blade Runner R
THE greatest sci-fi movie of all time, by miles. Blade Runner perfectly marries dystopia to film noir to create a dark and savage masterpiece. Vangelis' electronic score is phemonenal, and the special effects look remarkable for a film from 1982. The Director's Cut is definately the one to go for, ditching Ford's bored over-expository voiceover, and giving it a stark ending that questions our very humanity, the antithesis of the standard hero-overcomes-all finale. Ford is excellently world-weary in my estimation, and Rutger Hauer is exceptional in his martyr/messiah role. The sets are massively influencial; EVERY dystopian film since then has stolen the look! Ridley's finest hour, it's hard to see how he could top this.
