I like alienation & disenfranchisement as a residual theme to political cock-ups. I think the human condition is worth studyin, & worth more time than we give it. And oh yes, I hate Singaporeans.

Can you believe the director of La Haine has done a heartless shyte of a movie? Nope, read about it - he blames FOX for ruinin the film, comparin it to a bad episode of 24. Stay away from chicken shit PG-13-huntin studios next time! Poor Charlotte Rampling & G Depardieu!

This is my favourite movie in the whole world and it's deeply personal to me. It's also my very fierce opinion that people who dismiss this film are invariably pedantic film snobs, shallow 9-to-5 proletarian office sluts or contemptible know-it-alls who talk more than they listen. In any case, all your sorry lives will pass like a dream and nobody will ever remember you. Consider yourselves forewarned if you would not give more thought upon experiencin the magic and song that is The Hours because it's like someone sayin somethin you don't wanna hear.

Unflinchin, unforgivin, unforgettable. Loach, Leigh, Frears & the British people owe more to Alan Clarke than he will ever be given. This isn't a film about sensationalised violence. This is a brutal, one-sided story about helplessness, resignation, fear, institutionalisation, the English underclass & the ugly unseens of Thatcherism, told in a borstal through Ray Winstone - why is it so effin good? - because it's unfortunately true.

Fantastic debut from Nolan! Black and white film-noir with twists and turns. He uses his trade mark, non-linear editing, perfectly in his first film. The story is interesting and pulls you right in. Non-profesional acting is quite good, too.

There is a "batman" sign on the door of the lead character's house. It's funny that now, 10 years later, the director made the phenomenal Dark Knight.

Såsom i en Spegel (Through A Glass Darkly) Såsom i en Spegel (Through A Glass Darkly)
    4.0 Stars by Jac
"Through A Glass Darkly", first installment of "Silence of God" trilogy is also the first picture in which Bergman seems to see the way out of out daily misfortunes and suffering. Even though it may seem like a line of light when it's raining for a month now.

On the surface, "Through A Glass Darkly" is a very presice, cold and bleak picture, dealing with one of the most difficult themes to put on the screen: mental illness. Bergman, as wise and brilliant as he really was, comes out of it splendidly, not focusing on mental pain, but more eagerly on people around the sufferer as he understands that it's impossible to show the pain of schizophrenia.

As it is made in "chamber fashion", we have 24 hours and 4 people and it's really enough for all the drama. The script is perfectly written here and the world of the 4 family members as complex and as human as it always was in Bergman's cinematic world. We have Karin, latent schizophrenic and her responsible, straight-thinking, loving husband, Martin. Then her father, egoistic second-rate writer, David and his son, shy and fragile Minus. Karin is in the center, determining the drama of others. The worst situation would be Martin's, who, because of his love can't make himself believe that Karin' condition is uncurable, which makes him suffer a great deal. Then David, who repressed all of his emotions toward Karin, having the memory of her mother, who also suffered from the condition. He now lives in the state of quiet despair. And finally, son, Minus, desperate for attention of his father, spending his time with Karin, not understanding her mental state, becomes more and more confused and lonely.

The inevitable mental breakdown of Karin makes her father change perspective about himself and his family. It's tough, but maybe that's exactly how it is: maybe the only thing we really have here are our emotions. Maybe we only have ourselves, and, finally, maybe love and God are the same thing after all, and therefore we should care for it and embrace it. When you have young confused son, hungry for contact and affection, this is the most beautiful thing you can say to him, i.e. give him hope, comfort. The look of his eyes and the smile are priceless then.

While Bergman impressed me more in few occasions, such as in masterful "Persona", he clearly is in a top form as filmmaker here. I hate when cinema gives me hope, if only because very rarely the art make a real difference in our endurance to stay sane and sober or simply have a damn common sense, but when someone like Bergman give me a hand, it's hard not to take it, not to trust him. It simply makes you breathe a little better.
    Very good. Recommended.

I remember watching "Gothika" and asking the same question you ask in "Babylon A.D.". It indeed is weird to see Kassovitz playing Hollywood game. Too bad nothing good comes out from it, sad.

He says that FOX cutted 15 minutes out from Babylon A.D. That's way it is so bad. Either he is making excuses or he's telling the truth. I guess I'm gonna see it some day. Personally, whenever I see Vin Diesel I wanna run so... I won't mind if it take a while to see it. ;-)

    Death Race Death Race
    3.5 Stars by Michael
Every now and then, a sadistically violent, testosterone injected action film (lacking brains, a "good" story, and character development) comes along in all its brawny glory and just works. DEATH RACE is one of those films.

What suprises me most is that the film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the much bashed shlockmeister behind Mortal Combat and AVP. People have compared him too Uwe Boll as one of the worst directors ever... I never agreed with this. I saw potential in him with EVENT HORIZON, and now DEATH RACE, with it's tight direction, editing, and style makes me curious as to what Anderson will put together in the future. I know he is capable of making good films. Wheater he does or not is up to him.

And we've got an excellent cast here aswell. Jason Statham (who brings his usual charisma, which is far from a bad thing), Ian McShane, and Joan Allen as the villian? Very good decision (though she is slightly underused).

So DEATH RACE isn't high art. No suprise there... but its a first-rate action picture that provides the right amount of thrills and gruesome kills. Hell of a way to end the summer movie season.
I know Paul W.S. Anderson films don't usually scream "see me," but DEATH RACE is a lot of fun, and if you know what to expect (Cars and Death!) you may end up enjoying yourself quite a bit!

I'm sorry to say this, but really: what is all the fuss about!!! Did you see something that I didn't?
Yes: Ledger's performance as the Joker is brilliant, but the rest? This movie is already on Nr. 3 in the IMDB top 250, but COME THE F**K ON! Better than Seven Samurai or Apocalypse Now? Paleeze..
It started out pretty realistic, and then this guy shows up in a bat-costume, it seemed a little misplaced, and then the guy in the bat-costume started "talking", (I'm sorry Christian, I still think you're one hell of actor) it really lost me there..
What I did like (yes, somebody else had to point this out to me, because I slept through the last 1,5 hours -just kidding-) is that the Joker compared himself to a dog chasing a car (I heard it, it just didn't register), I mean he's a bad boy just because he is, and he doesn't have to have a deeper psychological motive to do the things he does. And "The Batman" becoming The Dark Knight? Pretty awesome too, but shit, the rest did not leave any impression on me whatsoever.
It did succeed in one thing, I'll ckeck the other Batman movies again.
Hey, you shouldn't really see this!!!

Anatomy of Hell Anatomy of Hell
    No rating. by Jac
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING REVIEW CONTAINS VULGARITY AND OTHER VIOLENT, NORMALLY UNAPPRECIATED FORMS OF EXPRESSION.

Oooh man, I've seen some awful fucking movies in my time but Catherine Breillat's "Anatomy of Hell" stands at "the top" at this point. Shit, I'm trying to find a title that was worse but after a while it just seem pointless. "Super Mario Bros."? Nah. "Scrapbook"? Close. "Me and You and Everyone We Know"? Yeah, it was terrible but at least it had some laughs, even though unintentional. "Fitzcarraldo"? Well, I'm still trying to forgive Herzog for the pain it caused me, so let's leave it until I do even if it takes me a next decade. Really, this is hopeless.

Since faster I'd hang myself on nearest tree than describe what's this pile of nonsense is about, I'll limit myself to say that I'm perfectly sure that vagina oozing blood, dildo-playing, fingerfucking, drinking blood off the tampon or circling an anus with red lipstick was supposed to be an artful approach to explore the sexual boundries than a terribly dull, pretensious mess, but even the most provocative artists know that creating something doesn't nessecairly equals vomiting on a viewer.

Script is non-existen. Acting is horribly wooden and, fuck, Rocco Siffredi should be locked in cage with tiger in it or better yet, send on some isolated island with two ugly whores to fuck them ass to mouth since his performance is a showcase of such an anti-talent that it deserves isolation. Hell, let the fuck die from dehydration.

As one film critic said: "Forget the Anatomy, it's a pure Hell". Well, you just can't put it better. The worst picture ever is still ahead of us and always will be as long as we exist, but everyone should hold their horses with calling some picture "The worst ever" till they see this thing.

On the other hand: you wouldn't wish to feel as if were swallowing your own vomit watching a movie now, would you?

Either way, distaste stays quite a bit.
I stopped recommending to... avoid pictures a while ago but let's make an exception.

It's worth it. To make an exception, I mean, of course.

I can see why some of my friends gave it one star and some gave 5. It's an original story that is filled with holes. There are too many coincidences for one story. Somebody should tell the writers "one or two coincidences are ok, hey it happens in the real life too right, but a million of them look fucking stupid in one story!" I am angry because this movie could be much better. The direction is good and stylized, the acting is very well balanced, the story really gets to your emotiions but god damn those plot holes! I was like this: Oh it started quite good...oh this is fucking stupid!...wait a minute, we may have somethin here...give me a break... Then came the great ending with a Coldplay song. I had to give it at least a three!

I've seen Paul McGuigan's two movies, this and Lucky Number Slevin, it looks like he is trying to shoot modern hitchcockian movies and Josh Hartnett is his James Stewart.
if you can get past some stupid parts in the story, there is a big possibility thay you are going to love this..

What's Eating Gilbert Grape What's Eating Gilbert Grape
    4.0 Stars by Kate
Endora. Or 'End of the line' as its life-long resident Gilbert Grape calls it. The oldest child to his morbidly obese mother who hasn't left the house in 7 years since his Father committed suicide. He has two younger sisters and a younger brother Arnie, who wasn't expected to live past the age of 10. Gilbert spends most of his time caring for Arnie, working at the local grocers and catching up with his harmless but ultimately un-interesting friends. His life is weird, and he doesn't seem to enjoy it, that is until newcomer Becky rolls in to town, and slowly but surely, Gilbert begins to wake up and realise that there's more to life than just existing. An interesting and rather compelling drama, 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?' is a story about love, life and responsibility. What could have been portrayed as a melodramatic cliché, actually turns out to be a really satisfying character driven drama, and can appeal to everyone who's ever felt like they were living life slightly sedated, or as if they were stuck in a rut and never going to get out. The titular character is portrayed by Johnny Depp, who is completely satisfactory as the quiet and reserved Gilbert. It is a very young Leonardo DiCaprio however, who completely steals the show as disabled Arnie. He immerses himself in to an amazing screen role and keeps a firm grasp on the character at all times. Simply put; he is perhaps the sole reason everyone should watch this film. An oddly exhilarating family drama, 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?' will leave you moved and optimistic at the very least. Great stuff.
Leonardo DiCaprio proves he's a briliant actor here!

This bleak tale of revenge set in a small English town sees Paddy Considine leaving the army and returning home to extract brutal revenge on a group of small time drug dealers who abused his retarded younger brother while he was away. This is an unusual revenge thriller as it often looks more like a slasher flick; Considine is obviously an unstable murderer who has been trained to kill and he systematically executes each of his victims in a very horror film style way. Except in this case his victims are a bunch of unsympathetic scum bags who you can't help feeling probably deserve their fate. In this way the film throws up many mixed emotions as you're never quite sure who you are supposed to be rooting for! But the real kick in the gut is provided by Shane Meadows; he directs very much like a documentary photographer cataloging the grim reality of working class small town life. The actors involved are ugly. They have bad hair and cheap clothes. In other words they look like REAL people, not Hollywood's glamorized, sanitized version of them. As such you feel you are right there in the thick of it, actually witnessing these gruesome events rather than just watching a piece of entertainment. It won't be to everyone's tastes as it's quite a tough movie to sit through because of its extremely grim subject matter, but ultimately it's a very powerful piece of work.

Professional contract killer Martin Blank decides to stop off at his high school reunion while out on a job and rekindles an old flame in the shape of Minnie Driver. Part romantic comedy, part post-Tarantino noir, this is the kind of cinematic hybrid that can sometimes go disastrously wrong (Gigli anyone? Thought not....) but this brilliantly written example is not one of them. The dialogue is witty, snappy and insightful, it has likeable characters played by a great cast headed by John Cusack at his most charming and who shares a real chemistry with his co-star. There are also some great supporting performances by Dan Aykroyd as a rival hitman, Alan Arkin as Blank's unwilling psychiatrist and Joan Cusak as his kind of post-modern old school noir style secretary. Add brisk no nonsense pacing and well handled set pieces and you have a smart and funny black comedy that works on every level.
If you liked Lucky Number Slevin, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or Shoot 'Em Up check this out. It's better than all of them.
