| Sherlock Holmes - PG-13 | Fun, funny, and kept me wondering how exactly it was going to work out. Way more action sequences than I needed, but apparently I ought to have expected that from Guy Ritchie. Really, Jude Law is the reason to see this film; his excellent acting increases its credibility ten-fold. RDJr does his usual fun stuff, though he never seems to quite fit into the Victorian period; poor McAdams does her best despite being terribly miscast. I would have loved to see Gillian Anderson (...or another woman with some real sophistication...) take on the role instead! | January 3, 2010 | N/A | |||
| Die Hard - R | One of the best Christmas movies ever. A brilliant meld of action, comedy and pathos. If all action movies were this much fun, I would be much more of a fan of the genre as a whole! | December 13, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - PG | Although I missed the deepening of the Harry/Snape antagonism - as well as the fabulous antics around the polyjuice potion - the teen angst came through loud and clear, helping this movie to succeed where many of the others have failed. Overall, I was impressed at how cohesive they were able to make the movie, given the insane number of details in the book. Still not sure how they're going to pull of the last two... | August 28, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Up - PG | I was crying within the first five minutes. And then laughing, and then crying...until a certain piece of technology that shall remain unnamed appeared, and became a key part of the film, and, sadly, did not make me laugh, though many other people in the theater apparently thought it was hysterical. I'll forgive a lot for the unspeakably beautiful tenderness between Ellie and Carl...but it wasn't quite enough to make up for that. | June 2, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Star Trek - PG-13 | The best movie I've seen in a long time. Great characters, fun dialogue, and unabashed references to the old Star Trek magically melded into a film that wasn't *just* campy, but was totally unabashed about having campy elements. Plus, you gotta love the digs at Kirk's womanizing ego. I liked this so much I might even want to own it. Whoa. Never thought I'd say that about an action-sci-fi-summer-movie-blockbuster! | May 21, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Mrs. Brown - PG | If I didn't already believe Judi Dench was one of the most fabulous actresses of our time, this movie would have convinced me. She mixed fragility and authority with a deftness that simply made you believe she *was* Queen Victoria. Billy Connolly provided an excellent foil. My only quibble is that the movie sort of falls apart about 3/4 of the way through - their relationship becomes much less interesting once it's well-established. It's the performances and the art direction that make this memorable, not the story itself. | March 19, 2009 | N/A | |||

| Friday the 13th - R | February 25, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| He's Just Not That Into You - PG-13 | Alright, alright...I'll try it. | February 25, 2009 | N/A | |||
| The Uninvited - PG-13 | February 25, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Push - PG-13 | February 25, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - PG-13 |
The last time I rated this movie (see below), I had just waded through I and II. I suppose, in relation to those movies, this is great. But in relation to IV, it's just terrible. Unbelievably poor writing, uninteresting or overdone acting depending on the actor, and way too much money spent on special effects. Give me the snappy exchanges, straightforward acting and low-budget effects of the first trilogy any day! Here's my old review: After the disappointing performances of Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman in II, III was a pleasant surprise. Only a few moments of truly horrific dialogue and unnecessarily long fight sequences. Plus, I could watch Obi Wan do just about anything for two hours...which is good, since he still ended up carrying a lot of the film, despite the improved performances by the aforementioned actors. |

| Slumdog Millionaire - R | I was drawn in by the story, couldn't have predicted the plot twists and turns, and thoroughly enjoyed the performances. This only falls short of five stars because the hype was so huge that the film could never live up to its reputation. | February 25, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Revolutionary Road - R | I can't get over how many facets of a single relationship these actors explored. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming by turns to watch them negotiate the choppy waters of their suburban American lifestyle. The attention to detail in all aspects of the film - from acting to set dressing - was astounding. The only reason it doesn't get five stars? I saw the ending coming a mile away. | February 3, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Waitress - PG-13 | I really enjoyed the mix of humor and humanity in this film. Parts were hard for me to stomach, I must confess, but the humor always lifted me out of the bleakness just in time. Haunted by the specter of the many women who must be in similarly hopeless situations, I was grateful for the empowering and uplifting force Jenna (Russell) found within herself and in the people who cared about her. Hurray for real community! | January 21, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Syriana - R | After all the hype, I expected more from this movie than I got. In the end, there's not nearly enough pay-off to justify all the work you do trying to follow what's going on. Fabulous acting aside, the themes are nothing new and (sadly) even the potentially shocking reveals about corruption on all sides just seem like the sad reality of the world rather than something mind-blowing. | December 27, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Sense and Sensibility - PG | Every bit as funny, well-acted and beautiful as I remembered. Excellent casting, from Thompson to Laurie and everyone in-between. And Kate Winslet almost - almost - redeems herself for Titanic by being lovely in this! | December 23, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Clue - PG | So much fun. Classic comedy at its very best! | December 9, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Quantum of Solace - PG-13 | Of course it was no Casino Royale - and the action sequences were too long and too hard to follow - but still I enjoyed this. Does anyone know why they purposely made Olga Kurylenko look...unappealing...throughout? I'm mystified. Give me Eva Greene any day. | December 9, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Were the World Mine - Unrated | Decidedly intriguing... | November 26, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Mamma Mia! - PG-13 | Silly and fun. But I must say the karaoke-style approach to the songs (on multiple levels...) made it utterly impossible for me to get lost in the movie. I kept thinking, "Oh right, this is ridiculously, unashamedly campy." Not quite the way I'd hope to take in a movie... | September 14, 2008 | N/A | |||
| The Dark Knight - PG-13 | Suspenseful from start to finish- I barely had time to catch my breath from one plot twist to the next. Truly excellent acting. My one quibble: as with Batman Begins, way too much destruction - I could have done without quite so many insane car chases in which everyone and every type of vehicle imaginable was not only involved, but blown up. Oh, and Ms. Gyllenhaal's rather insipid portrayal of a horribly written character was disappointing (if not unexpected). But for all that, I'd see it again! | July 24, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Michael Clayton - R | Tom Wilkinson's opening monologue blew me away and I was hooked from the first minute on. I loved watching Tilda Swinton's character wrestle with her inner insecurities to put on the corporate smoothness. But if you're looking for a thriller, this isn't it - this is decidedly a drama that plays out slowly and deliberately. | July 2, 2008 | N/A | |||
| Sex and the City - R | Every bit as ridiculous as I expected, but entertaining for all that. | June 25, 2008 | N/A | |||
| WALL-E - G | I had the wonderful experience of seeing this at Pixar itself in a sneak preview - so different from all the other Pixar films, and yet every bit as mesmerizing, touching and funny. How do they make robots so compelling with hardly any dialog? Truly amazing. I'd see it again for sure! | June 23, 2008 | N/A |
