Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One) Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One) Unrated
A refreshingly un-Hollywood take on the thriller, featuring a strong cast and a patient direction, Tell no One is enjoyable, even though it tends to be a bit confusing and has got a lot of plotholes. The movie follows the fate of a doctor, very good performance by Cluzet, as he discovers that his wife may still be alive, 8 years after her supposed murder. The movie criss crosses the stories of various parties involved in the plot, the husband, his attorney, the police, the villains and so on. While we are dropped into a merry guessing game, the movie slowly feeds us with new faces and information. Yet, there are so many people involved in the scheme, that is can become quite confusing and the movie needs the heavy bunch of 15 minutes to explain what actually happened 8 years ago, this should tell you something. Unfortunately, despite making sense somewhat, the conclusion is still full of plot holes and very unbelievable, despite being a shocker. Thus, it may be entertaining but it leaves you a bit unsatisfied. The cast is solid, with Cluzet and the ever-good Scott Thomas crowning the ensemble.
Detective Story Detective Story Unrated
A very good "chamber" movie, with the setting being limited to a small locale (a police station) this case, the movie evolves around the dense relationships and small events turning into big one in the blink of an eye. The movie boasts an golden era cast, with a brisk Kirk Douglas in the lead. Yet, the movie comes alive through the smaller roles which are effectively casted as well, Joseph Wiseman (deceased only recently) shows off his lunatic repertoire while Cathy O' Donnell walks a fine line as slighlty disturbed woman under the influence. The movie tackles a very critical topic, considering it is an American (!) move from the 50ies (!), two thumbs up. With isses so un-canonical and an ending so unexpected, the movie stands apart from the usual Hollywood porridge of mediocricy and you by the time the film has finished, you can tell that it is based on play. The ambiguity of characters, the multidude of stories and the non-sensationalist ending feel fresh and entertaining.
