This isn't a movie you say you like. It's takes you through a complex series of emotions that cannot be categorized as like and dislike. The bizarre staging intrigues you at the start & compels you to watch. It also adds a very eerie whole-town-knows what-you're doing aspect. You are lulled into the helpful town's kindness. Until slowly, Lars von Trier chips away at the town's kind facade SLOWLY exposing it's dark, selfish, brutish core. As the town turns on Grace it becomes difficult to watch but one cannot turn away. Lars von Trier's visceral vision comes to full & horrifying fruition. Just when i thought the film couldn't possibly get any bleaker it sunk to a new depth of despair. The conclusion is rather shocking & disturbed me because i felt the need for them to die coursing through my vein. It rather frightened me. Then when the credits kick in with that song, in stark contrast to the score, and those images i just couldn't take it. A disturbing portrait of the feral & atrocious side of humanity. It makes you wonder if you yourself or those around you could truly be capable of such malevolent & vicious actions.

A stunningly romantic film, within the vein of sadomasochistic relationships. The opening sequence is one the best things committed to film. The confidence, purpose & sensuality Gyllenhaal gives is amazing. I also enjoyed the rather subtle use of water in the begging, scenes where Gyllenhaal seemed submerged. Only when she begins her relationship with Spader does it stop, she is reborn. Both give stunning performances oozing with sexuality & a wanton passion that is believable. After this role i suddenly found James Spader attractive. A scene that sticks out is when Gyllenhaal sees Spader tending to his beautiful garden, gently nurturing his beautiful orchids. It's almost as though Spader's office is an Eden, Gyllenhaal's garden of earthly delights. It's as though this relationship is an experience of almost religious proportions for both of them. Who knew misspelled words could be so hot? The climax is shocking in it's content but a rapturously romantic sentiment within their mindsets. Eventually this movie is a love story. It has taken that concept & purged it of all that hackneyed tripe & proven one can make an emotionally raw, & moving love story with out following the ole predictable formula. Subversive, wondrously candid & dripping with sexuality this movie is a must. It touches you in ways you never knew you liked to be touched in.
