The Ruins

I really enjoyed the book that this was based on. Read the damn thing in a day - I couldn't put it down.
The movie is almost as good. Something about it is stopping me from giving it that extra half a star for a full "4", but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie.
The SFX gags were really well done - and all old-school with a minimal amount of CGI (used mostly when the vines have to pull someone). I think this helped everything come across as more realistic and that much harder to watch.
The alternate endings are okay - one actually gives it that stereotypical horror "set up a sequel" ending.

I MUST see this!
THIS looks like it should have been in "Grindhouse" instead of "Death Proof".
Knuckle-bruisin', ass-kickin', bare titties and blazing guns. Add in Michael Madsen and Dennis Hopper and this is a fucking winner!
The Signal

I was expecting a bit more than what I got, but what I did get I enjoyed. Although I kind of didn't care for the female lead - am I supposed to sympathize with a woman who cheats on her husband? Well, yeah - if I'm given a reason (he beats her, or something). I didn't get that here, so I didn't give a rat fuck if she died or not.
The gore was cool and well done, so kudos to that department. And like my Main Man Dave said, the comedy segment was the best of the three.
Flesheater (Zombie Nosh)

What a honking piece of shit. I love shitty movies, so I was actually enjoying this while laughing at the utter "What the fuck?!?"-ness of this.
The script was apparently made up as shooting went along since about 3/4ths of the way through the film we suddenly jump locales and all but two of the original characters are dead. New characters are introduced, mainly through pointless full frontal nude scenes that fucking DEFINE gratuitous and then are summarily killed off.
The acting was pure comedic gold as everyone seemed to be reciting something the learned mere moments before the camera started rolling. Toss in some repetitive synth "mood" music and you're all set.
It's always cute to see 80s fashion, though. So I've gotta give some props to the fucking insane amount of denim the movie has.
If you love shit movies, you'll probably let loose with a wild orgasm by the half-way point. If you hate shit movies, you can watch this to further solidify your distaste for movies made on a budget that wouldn't hit the limit of most people's first credit cards.
Last - a wicked high five to Hinzman who saves all the "naked girl" kills for his own zombie character! Way to abuse those writer/director/producer/editor powers, old man!
Hancock
PG-13
I've read and heard that this is total shit, changing gears midway through with neither "part" of the movie really making sense in conjunction with the other.
As such, fuck it.

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
PG
Bar none, my absolute favorite movie of ever and all time. I can even tolerate Greedo shooting first - barely. This baby hits it on all cylinders.
2.
Spider-Man
PG-13
The best superhero comics-to-film adaption ever. It took a long time for this film to finally become a reality and much to the delight of myself and zillions of comic nerds everywhere, the wait was worth it. While the movie took the typical Hollywood liberties with the story and characters, it was still very, VERY faithful to the comics and this is why it hit perfectly on so many levels. From Peter's angst as a teenager to young adult, the dynamics of the characters and the life lesson of "With great power, there comes great responsibility". The casting wasn't perfect, but the acting ability of everyone compensated for those shortcomings (although J.K. Simmons was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT in his portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson!), and the special effects really made you believe a man could spin a web any size and catch thieves just like flies. 5 Webshooters out of 5

National Lampoon's Animal House

"Excuse me sir, is this the Delta house?" The funniest, most quotable movie of all time - and nothing you can say will make me change my mind.
4.
The Breakfast Club
R
A brain... an athlete... a basket case... a princess... and a criminal. With tons of memorable quotes, laugh-out-loud scenes and memorable characters, 'The Breakfast Club' is, hands down, the best "teen movie" made. In an hour and a half, John Hughes managed to sum up high school life circa 198something and give those of us who saw the movie while living the life hope. Hope that we weren't alone in being labeled by adults; hope that things could "only get better".
5.
Die Hard
R
How good is this movie? Lets just say that whenever you read about an action film these days, it's pitched as "Die Hard in/on a ____(blank)______".

North by Northwest
Unrated
The classic Hitchcock "Wrong Man" movie has it all; action, suspense, humor and romance. Anyone that likes movie like "The Figitive" and any "man on the run" movies should look this one up and see how masterfully this type of story can be delivered.

Student Bodies
by JessiBefore the Scary Movie franchise stopped being funny, Student Bodies was pretty okay.
The real standout of this movie is "The Stick" as Malvert the Janitor. Worth watching for him alone! After years of nothing, Student Bodies has finally made its way to DVD. Check it out if you get a chance!

Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (The Witches) (Haxan)
by JessiIncredible testament to the storytellling ability silent film had -- due in part to all the magnificient imagery in here. There's things in this film that are still taboo, so I can't rightly imagine the reaction of audiences in the 1920s. Incredible imagery and acting throughout, with a wonderful accompanying soundtrack. When I think of silent film, I don't generally associate education or documentary, but here is a prime example. Entertaining and fascinating at the same time.
The 1922 version is preferable to the 1968-ish rehashing.

Sukiyaki Western Django
by JessiWhen did Miike's films get so polished? This movie borders on classy -- without ever actually touching it, thankfully.
I was absolutely blown away by this movie. This is Miike's homage to the Spaghetti Western, and a stylish one at that. Has the definite feel of A Fistful of Dollars, and although the premise is something we've seen before, the presentation takes the concept and elevates it to a new level. Of course, it's Miike, so the word 'fantastic' comes to mind, in a couple different connotations.
Spaghetti Western returns to its Japanese roots, and damn it if the result isn't captivating.Make the effort to find this one!

[Rec]
by JessiIn a similar vein to Blair Witch and Cloverfield, this entire movie is shown through a handheld camera, run by one of the central characters in the film. The story begins as the filming of a television show featuring some firemen, but as the crew of two follow them to investigate a woman trapped in her room, it becomes far more sinister.
Although it's true that there is no character development, this is actually something that enhances the film. As you're watching [REC], you're thrust into the midst of this situation just the same as the two main protagonists, and are faced with all the horrors exactly as they are. You're not given time to identify with anyone or anything, which makes for a very frightening atmosphere of unfamiliarity.
Great pacing, amazing acting, and incredibly unique. Pretty unsettling film, and one of the best I've seen in a long time.Really phenomenal -- but you have to view it with all the lights off and when the sun is down. Check this one out before the remake comes out -- "Quarantine" -- later this year. I think the DVD release is meant to coincide with that, maybe a month prior, but if you have access to veoh, you can view it online.
